Yes to Mother Nature, the only fabric freshener we’ve ever used. Drying laundry is our favorite household task. https://bikemonterey.org/educating-neighborhoods-on-the-beauty-of-clotheslines.html
As for that tractor tire, it was a gift from our Carmel Valley organic farming (since 1940s) friends Russell and Karen Wolter. It served as sandbox frame for our daughter. On day of this photo, we were rolling it to a neighbor’s for reuse in same manner.
Excerpt about that tire is from our 1996 essay “Why Live Simply."

Yikes! Our last serious sting was in the house, putting away bathtowels we’d just taken off the clothesline. Didn’t realize we’d folded a bee into one, until it painfully let us know. Thanks for reminding us we need to snap/shake laundry before folding. [@hal_pomeranz](https://infosec.exchange/@hal_pomeranz ) @npub13x3…jdre

Monterey Bay Aquarium’s new CEO Jenny Gray (only the 2nd top exec since MBA established in 1984) was working on a master’s in #transportation engineering when she first visited MBA in 1989. She has a doctorate in #ethics, focused on issues involving #wildlife
From interview by Paul Rogers, published 6/6/26:
What can be improved upon at the Monterey Bay Aquarium? "They are world leaders here for a good reason. They’re incredible. There won’t be Earth-shattering changes. Nothing’s broken here. In fact, the exact opposite.”
The major challenge facing the world’s #oceans right now? “The big threats are #pollution — whether that’s #plastic or other pollution — and #ClimateChange, and over-#exploitation of the #ocean itself.”
As a charter member who had to drop membership as prices climbed, we also appreciated his question about admission cost. https://www.mercurynews.com/2026/06/06/new-leader-takes-the-helm-at-the-monterey-bay-aquarium/?share=lw6tehdtor6tt2i6aatb

Our sympathy to the grieving wife and mother, and other loved ones, of Yuji Hu, of Calgary, Alberta, Canada and his five-year-old daughter. As far back as 1975 corporate insiders were aware of potential risks. They called #paraquat’s long-term effects "a quite terrible problem” (Nov 11, 1975 ltr to #Chevron Environmental Health,, Standard Oil of California.)
Over 70 countries banned paraquat; it remains legal in US. #EnvironmentalProtectionAgency banned use on #golf courses but allows on crops.
Most US paraquat comes from China & UK—both banned paraquat’s use in their countries.

Among updates last night to Winter Bike Buzz are photos of people we met on the coastal trail February 16: Wyatt, Adalina, Chris, and more. https://bikemonterey.org/bike-buzz-winter-2025.html
Pictured here is Wyatt, an employee of California State Parks, Monterey. Wyatt rides a Class 2 e-bike and is a great role model for sharing the trail courteously and safely with other people who bike, walk, skate, and scoot.

"Immigrants and Refugees: County of Monterey’s Welcoming Resolution and Know Your Rights Resources."
https://bikemonterey.org/immigrants-and-refugees-county-of-monterey-know-your-rights.html
County of Monterey Board of Supervisors unanimously approved an update to its 2017 Welcoming Resolution. Other steps the county is taking include but are not limited to: Distributing 20,000 Constitutional Rights for Immigrant Education (“red cards”) in Spanish and English; creating Know Your Rights informational videos in English, Spanish, Triqui, and Mixteco; co-hosting community immigration forums on Know Your Rights; and more.
Why? Monterey County, “Salad Bowl of the Nation” / “Salad Bowl of the World,” is preparing for the new U.S. president, POTUS 47, to take office.

Local public library’s seed library is happening again. We also exchange seeds with a neighbor. When we do need to buy seeds, we love what has become our favorite seed company: Sow True Seed. And today we received their 2025 seed catalog.
#SowTrueSeed is in Asheville, North Carolina. Although their community was devastated by #Hurricane Helene, their business was largely unscathed. Their seed inventory did not wash away, their employees are safe, and their building intact. Free shipping on orders through December. https://sowtrueseed.com/pages/about
We’re grateful to our longtime friend Charlotte in South Carolina for introducing us to Sow True Seed, which became a worker-owned cooperative in 2022.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is aka America's environmental intelligence agency (https://www.noaa.gov/about-our-agency).
#NOAA's work includes such missions as flying into the eyewall of #HurricaneHelene. https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/news/sep24/ngs-storm-imagery-helene.html.
If you’re a U.S. voter and are undecided about which presidential candidate to support, consider NOAA on #ClimateChange https://www.noaa.gov/news-release/climate-change-impacts-are-increasing-for-americans and #ClimateJustice https://www.noaa.gov/education/resource-collections/climate/climate-change-impacts.
Also consider that "#Project2025 includes about four pages on #NOAA and the National Weather Service. That part was written by Thomas F. Gilman, who was an official in [POTUS 45’s] Commerce Department. The document describes NOAA as a primary component 'of the climate change alarm industry' and said it 'should be broken up and downsized.’” https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/fact-checking-what-project-2025-says-about-the-national-weather-service-and-noaa

Mateos has been interning this summer at the National Sea Grant Law Center in Mississippi. One of his current projects:
