I went to Caltech for two years and I find Big Bang Theory not merely bad, but excruciatingly painful and infuriating to watch. I suspect that the Institute, which is not a nice place, must have had some part in promoting that dreck...they wanted that image of themselves put into multiple seasons of television, in order to help conceal the truth about themselves. ~Chara

so...do you know about the donkey-show thing from Apuleius? there's this bizarre episode in *The Golden Ass* / *The Metamorphoses* of L. Apuleius, where poor donkeyfied Lucius run into a bunch of religious creeps who aren't...EXACTLY Christian, but the text hints strongly that it's making fun of the Jesus freaks. and they kidnap Lucius for some...donkey-show ritual.
like...is this just another of those little historical details about Christianity that's been scrubbed out of the officially bowdlerized version of events? were Christian splinter groups all having...donkey rituals, capitalizing on Christian donkey iconography? because there IS Christian donkey iconography. ~Chara

this item intrigues me. I know the chemical mechanism behind "fabric softening", and why it can impart an almost unnatural sense of softness to a fabric. There's negative surface charges on the fibers of the fabric, generally, when it's all staticky. The fabric softener contains long-chain surfactant molecules with a *positive* charge on them, so the "static cling" is neutralized, and now your clothes have a kind of molecular film of these cationic detergent molecules on all the fibers. To me fabric-softened clothing feels weirdly greasy or something.
But wool balls! that sounds a lot more friendly. Maybe the lanolin helps. ~Chara

I don't remember my experiences very well at all and I don't have any recollection of whether the pediatrician who tormented me (and my older sibling, probably, since this doctor was "the family pediatrician" so to speak) had some quasi-religious zeal in back of his activities. I doubt it. What I remember, vaguely, is the cold clinical intensity of an Augustus Frost (cf. "That Hideous Strength by #CSLewis) or the Nazı dentist from "Marathon Man".
But surely, the right-wing #Christian set to which #JamesDobson was appealing has converged enthusiastically upon #ABA and similar methods. The *goal* is the same as that of their own approach to parenting: obtain compliance from the child, no matter how much they scream in pain. Screaming in pain is *defiance*, it's being "strong-willed" and ungrateful. Forcing "discipline" upon children is the highest act of love and they should be forced into gratitude for it.

I haven't been able to read some of the articles on #JamesDobson yet. I was abused in early childhood, though fortunately it was not chiefly at the hands of my parents. They were angry and unhappy and therefore sometimes hurtful, but they were (on the whole) loving and supportive in a way that's never to be expected from a Christian-extremist parent using Dobson's approach to breaking children's spirits.
But I was opportunistically abused by a pediatrician, someone practicing ABA-type methods of behavioral conditioning, though #ABA was not in currency as a euphemism yet. Hence by coincidence I have some personal experience with #abuse that is in the vein of Dobson's: controlling, aimed at inculcation of obedience at all costs, and delivered in the bland but unforgiving tones of a corrupt doctor.

the situation has gotten very bizarre, especially because none of these people, from what I can tell, are actually *religious* in any way that I would call religious. they are usually very unchurched. they have no rituals, no sacred times or places. in their personal behaviors they are about as secular and indeed vulgar as it's possible to get, so their "faith", whatever it is, seems to have zero effect upon their behavior--except when it comes to making life hell for other people. ~Chara
