the undermining of the veracity of photo and video as a credible source of evidence is probably one of the worst and most socially destructive impacts of gen ai. SynthID only helps identify some content made with the big guys, but even with regulation, there will be grey and black market generators out there making disinformation that we can’t easily show to be false. And with that, a photo or video will no longer be enough evidence and more criminals will get away with more crimes.

thanks for the article, Aral. Seems there is a deeper problem inside the EBU, and I can understand the boycott. I agree that a good solution would be to exclude countries in active conflict, although this would also impact Ukraine. The EBU seem to be trying to ignore or underplay the issue which is problematic.
It’s a real dilemma for me, as I don’t want to “let the terrorists win” by allowing the actions of a single nation, and the inaction of the EBU to take away what I see as an uplifting symbol of unity and joy.
What I don’t think is effective, is the vitriol and bullying directed at me and others just for trying to enjoy what is otherwise an uplifting escape from the darkness of the world for a few hours. It only deepens the divide.

first - I’ll be clear that i don’t support the current Israeli regime, and believe they are committing war crimes.
I just don’t understand why Eurovision has become a proxy for what Israel is doing. Why can we not condemn the actions of a state, and also appreciate an event that celebrates joy and unity? Is it so black and white? It feels like undermining the cultural events that show the diversity and open values of Europe, is actually against freedom and supports fascist ideologies.
Supporting something like this song contest, does not equate to supporting genocide.

ah okay that makes sense. I have only read a couple of articles on SS, never really looked into it as a platform, so the fact it has a “echo chamber” recommendation system, and it platforms extremists, means it’s making a statement to deliberately host there. Thanks for the insight.

When did the technology platform become a political decision over a technology / features decision? Ghost, Substack, Wordpress, aren’t they all blogging platforms with different feature sets? As a reader, I shouldn’t have to think about the tech platform, just the content, right?

there is a growing movement of using the open RSS / podcast mechanism for audiobooks. The Podcasting 2.0 namespace supports the audiobook media type, and pioneers like @npub1xwp…m2fz are even integrating with the fediverse to create a game-changing “value exchange” to take back the power from big-tech middlemen.
Using the same idea for music has already started to take off, and audiobooks and courses will be next. This is really something to watch.

I did a double take here - 385 *incidents* of mass shootings in the US so far this year alone. Not victims, incidents. That’s a minimum 1540 people killed. Horrific.

Is it true that after very publicly and clearly, in a video taped interview with a journalist, Elon told advertisers to “go fuck [them]selves”, and is now _suing_ those same advertisers for not advertising?! Won’t this open up a discovery opportunity for the defence, which I very much doubt he wants? Weird.
