I agree with you, but this is pretty typical for law enforcement in general. Part of it is that training at "the range" is very specific . . . training for moving targets in high stress situations is a completely different experience, and much more expensive and time consuming to do, than standing calmly at the range shooting holes in paper. A combination of range time and simulators is probably the do-able option; don't know whether Secret Service uses that approach.

Calcium isn't magnetic and the magnets aren't there to attract anything; IIRC they are supposed to affect the molecules the calcium is in so that they don't leave deposits, but they do not take the calcium out of the water. All that said, 1. for every "expert" who says they work, there are three that say they don't, and 2. even the "pro magnet" people admit the effect is temporary; works with running water but not with a tank of water in your water heater.

They've ramped up dramatically over the last few days and it suddenly hit me: the spammers have a quarterly target they're trying to hit . . . it's odd to think about spammers being grilled in a quarterly "sales" meeting. Not really. The dynamic in California statewide races is predictable: in the open primaries, democrat support is split over multiple candidates while Republican support coalesces behind one guy, two at most. The polling then produces the illusion that the Republican has a shot. Every democrat candidate wants the same thing: to be the #2 primary vote getter behind the Republican candidate, because in the general, the state elects the democrat every time.

Just guessing, but ICE was probably on edge because this was the latest of multiple incidents of protestors using cars, which are potentially fatal for the LEO regardless of intent. This is one of those "when you slow it down and discuss it, he didn't need to shoot, but he was making a decision in a high stress second . . ."; I can see thinking in that moment that she was trying to hit him, nevertheless, the car was clearly turning away from him when he fired.

I pinged some friends in Austin Texas, one of whom is a realtor, and they haven't heard of / seen these abandoned illegal ghost houses, but they have seen it with seized/impounded vehicles - say friends have bought cars at auction that still have half a case of Modelo in the back. The realtor has seen promotional materials for programs that allow illegals to buy homes, so not saying this isn't happening somewhere in Texas, it's a big place, but I doubt it's that common.

Agree. Republicans in California should stop putting candidates for statewide offices into the primaries: every Dem in the primary wants it to end with one Dem (who splits the Dem vote) and one Republican (usually supported monolithically) because Republicans will never win a statewide race. By not running, the Republicans might get leverage to make one of the two Democrats in the general election moderate to get some conservative votes, which is the only way for R's to have any influence at all.

I agree that the term "depression" gets thrown around carelessly, more or less synonymous with sadness, but I've had two family members suffer from clinical depression, and it is real and it is different.
People who suffer from real depression both cannot imagine a better future and are in denial that there is anything wrong with them; they resist both the diagnosis and the treatment. In these ways it is totally different from "look at me" sadness. For them, drugs are a lifesaver.

It's a good point that there's a lot of pre-2011 housing stock in CA; my point was that talking about house sprinkler systems like they were unheard of is just wrong. Ref them and low water pressure: in firestorms like we see sometimes see in Cali, all the water pipes above ground will melt; there will be a lot of water leaks with or without sprinkler systems.

Your summary is pretty good, but I have a different view on the GOP: I don't think Trump/MAGA is anywhere near capturing the GOP. I think the GOP is split maybe 50/50 (at best): MAGA vs. RINO (with RINO predominate in the Senate, MAGA in the house, and huge variation state by state). Either the MAGA/MAHA alliance sticks and boots the RINO out of the GOP entirely, or the MAGA/MAHA folks need to opt out and go third party. Either way, it will be painful and messy.
