RE: https://mastodon.social/@fediversereport/116568347773899378
Question is also whether any relevant players are actually aware and involved in these processes? Is Mastodon (@npub10gc…0m2k), is [@swf](https://socialwebfoundation.org ), is Bluesky? The only reason there is a messaging interop requirement (however flawed and gamed) is because Matrix was in the room when these things were discussed, notably the XMPP Standards Foundation was not.
DMA is reviewed every few years and while this review was a missed opportunity, a new review will happen in the near future.

Crypto currency scammers are targeting ships stuck in the Persian Gulf by pretending to be the IRGC and offering safe passage in exchange for crypto payment.
"On April 18, when Iran ‌briefly opened the strait subject to checks, ships tried to pass but at least two of them, including a tanker, reported that Iranian boats had fired shots at them, forcing the vessels to turn around.
MARISKS said that it believed that at least one of the vessels, which tried to exit the strait on Saturday and was hit by gunfire, was a victim of the fraud."

"It is one thing to value technodiversity and designs for the pluriverse; it is quite another to actually work towards it under intense political economic pressures towards homogeneity coming from all sides. Even research grounded in critical refusal of harmful data practices, beautifully exemplified by the Feminist Manifest-No, is not fully liberated from that which it refuses. Nor should it be: it is a reaction against, a response to. Imagine what STS scholarship might be like if we were freed from the need to refuse at all. Would computational systems be so interesting at that point? What about them would remain interesting? What else would capture our attention instead--and shouldn't some of us start to turn our efforts to those things now, before the AI investment bubble erodes the edifice of consensus that AI is self-evidently interesting?"

I really wonder what kind of implications this will have for the collective safety model in this space. Things like DMs, follower-only, blocks, federated deletes etc are dependent on correct implementation of those things.
These are things that depend not only on the local software working well, but also the remote one.
Seems like fully vibecoded instance software could lead to a massive federated whoopsie.

"What was normalized in Gaza will not stay in Gaza. This is perhaps the most important thing to understand, and the thing that the framing of the current conflict as a local, bounded military operation most dangerously obscures. Every targeting algorithm stress-tested over Gaza’s densely populated streets, every AI system whose performance data is being collected in real time, represents intellectual property and operational knowledge that will flow, via export and emulation, through the global defense technology market into other conflicts, other theaters, other cities."

The idea of starter packs and introductions are nice and all, but then this happens:
"omg someone who self labels as a zionist put me on an antisemite list on bluesky" (real case, anonymized)
People added to such (publicly shareable) lists and starter packs (two different things) do not get notified at all! Furthermore, they cannot remove themselves from such packs. Yes, you can report, but that might be too late.
Where is the informed consent? Why is it not a requirement to give consent before one shows up on lists. Why can consent to inclusion not be withdrawn? I mean, this stuff is trivial to do in a centralized app developed by a company with a lot of staff and millions in funding. Yet, it doesn't happen.
Move fast and break someone's life.

Edit: the piece is publicly available now!
Together with @npub1amy…qnrw and Benjamin Royer, I wrote a detailed research note on the topologies of digital identity systems (siloed, centralised, federated and user-centric) and how thinking derived from topological determinism, common in technical communities, obscures how digital identity systems operate in practice.
To understand the threats of digital identity, we must shift from rigid models and describe the topologies of digital representations as they truly are, rather than as they are purported to be.
Expect surprising twists and turns: DIY identity portability techniques turn siloed identities into centralised ones which allow attackers cascading access; platformisation turns federated identities into centralised ones and de-facto user-centric identities might be more likely to emerge from siloed models rather than user-centric ones. It's a mess. But one we have to reckon with.

"Duk Op is growing and we're out of promo material. Because of that we need money to make posters and stickers. Its up to you how much you feel like donating.
https://opencollective.com/dukop/contribute/spred-dukop-74996
*Why*
The money is to break big tech algorithms by being visible. We want to be visible where its always at: the street!
*What*
https://dukop.dk has been online since 2015 and is a
activist run online calendar platform. With Duk Op its possible to find each other and form alliances, without the censorship and platform capitalism form Big-Tech. After the collapse, censorship and pay-for-views models from several of the big platforms, Duk Op is more relevant than ever. Duk Op is what we collectively make it, and
the more we use Duk Op, the more useful the platform will become.
Thats why its important to get all good comrades along.
*Goal*
We aim at printing 4000 stickers and 1500 poster to spread in all of
the circles of Duk Op; from Malmö, Odense and Århus. Out goal is to have funding to print at the cooperative Eks-skolen print, instead of some online- profitbased print company."

"The #fediverse and AT Protocol also yield different problems: which instance should a newsroom choose to make its home? How can it measure #engagement in what it posts in a decentralized system so that it knows what’s working and where it should continue to invest its meager resources?
Much has been written about newsrooms’ inability to move away from X even as it has become a hotbed of white supremacy and far-right rhetoric. The honest truth is that it still drives significant #traffic to their websites, and in an environment where traffic #referrals are dropping overall, intentionally further deepening the traffic shortfall is understandably not a career risk newsroom leaders are willing to make."
I've said it before, the fediverse needs to solve the issue of a universal referrer in outgoing links in order to show up in web traffic statistics as a single entity ("Mastodon", "Fediverse" whatever). Currently all web traffic coming from the fediverse shows up as one of any of the 10k+ different domains which will naturally all be at the end of the "long tail" and *always* behind centralized platforms, no matter how popular it gets. Organizations need to see line go up to invest in this ecosystem.

#introduction #reintroduction
Hi all, Roel he/him.
An artist and designer with an interest in computer networks, materiality of the internet, digital community infrastructure, DIY/DIWO approaches, FOSS culture.
You might know my work from the LowTech Mag's solar powered server project https://solar.lowtechmagazine.com
Currently pursuing a #PhD in Interaction and Participatory #Design at Malmö University. As part of that research I work together with actors in the cultural sector to co-design alternative social media infrastructures with/for them. These are mostly based on fediverse applications, so I am also interested in aspects of #federation #governance #contentmoderation and more generally how to transition to and improve alternatives together etc. This space is far from perfect and in some cases insufficient but we need to start somewhere??
I'm a founding member of https://varia.zone, and also part of https://lurk.org. With LURK we've been running a fediverse instance called post.lurk.org since 2018, for which I am happy to be one of the co-admins! As part of that I boost #introductions, calls and questions..
