@npub107w…9n4a @npub1f8e…zu5u If it's filesystem-based, that'd be cool. rio is fine as a window manager, but it's just fine: the main thing it gives you is that it fits perfectly with what :bwk: called "the tools approach" and fits really well with the rest of the OS. Like, you can grep a shell window running in another session. You can mount a remote display and then start sending it events and moving windows around.
Like, on Linux, X11 fits how things work. I don't like how things work, but it fits.
I typed "arcan" into the search engine and then "arcan window manager" because a bunch of irrelevant stuff popped up and this link was purple: https://arcan-fe.com/about/ . I must have looked at it at some point. It does look like if I were to replace X with something, this would be the thing. But X is X, Linux is Linux.

Well, some time between 4 and 5 this morning, the dog (Coco) went. Last meal was a little steak but she wouldn't eat, the chemo had her nauseated. She was in remission from the first round, but it started to come back (epithelial lymphoma, large-cell, apparently not a goot prognosis) so the vet retried with a stronger dose a couple of weeks ago, but she never got over that hump.
Think it was peaceful. She was on some new anti-nausea meds, so her last day was better than her last two weeks. In any case she slep through the night instead of waking up several times to shit or, since starting the new chemo, waking up to vomit.
Last meal was a couple of pieces of the fillet from a porterhouse that I'd gotten to celebrate the first paycheck (turns out dog cancer can wipe you out). She didn't eat it but smiled like she did when you tossed her food or fixed her blanket, then she buried it under her pillow for later. We'd usually give her a bit and let let the cats have a pass at the bone and then let her spend a few days on it. (She was old so even small bones like that took her a few days.)
Never met a dog quite like this. Never ate shoes or chewed furniture, only barked at cops. I hear she'd chase down guys that were smoking 27s when I wasn't around. ( I eventually went to vaporizers and then nothing.)
These are some photos when she was healthy. I didn't take too many photos after she got skinny. (Around this time last year she went from 75lbs. to 45 in two months, we weren't sure what was wrong with her. She regained the weight after first round and got up to 70 but the muscle wasting from the steroids had made it hard for her to walk.)
Anyway, she died in her own bed, under her own blanket, instead of at the vet's office. She'll end up under the avocado tree she enjoyed so much.
So, anyway, I'm hammered and if anyone is looking for me, I'll be drinking more.

VM keeps crashing. This is way, way better than the box crashing, because I can just restart the VM running on the box.
The box has plenty of RAM, we could lose a stick without noticing. The problem is figuring out which bank is bank 18.
DISREGARD THAT, I lshw(1) COCKS: It's "B7".
[Elided: a paragraph about me guessing at numbering schemes. Linux calls that bank "Bank 18" but the manual doesn't, the labels don't: they have A1 through A12, and so on with B, C, and D. So how does that map? Does B1 follow A1 or A12? Then I decided to check if the banks were 0-indexed or 1-indexed, which would give me a maximum of 4 sticks to pop if I went full-retard on the RAM, so I fired up lshw and it turns out that they are 0-indexed and also that the stupid $letter$number scheme can be queried somehow and lshw is clever enough to do that and also apparently now that I check dmidecoe, it's in there, too. I think it works in pairs so popping bank 18 probably makes it ignore another bank.]
It's also entirely possible that RAM has nothing to do with this. memtest86+ ran for almost an entire day without finding anything.
From the host machine's perspective, qemu is one process, then one process gets the bus error, so the entire VM tanks, and that's all of FSE. If BEAM or nginx or whatever were running on the host machine, it'd be one process killed, and as long as that process wasn't responsible for supervising other processes, it could be bounced. So maybe it'd be better to proceed with the previous plan of moving that shit off the VM. More resilient overall.
According to /usr/src/linux-`uname -r`/Documentation/admin-guide/mm/memory-hotplug.rst , it looks like the memory hotplug system can be abused for this, so rather than driving down there to pop the stick, I can just pop it from here. It'll require a reboot (it'd require a reboot to physically remove the stick anyway), so maybe this weekend.
That might fix The Last Problem.

Object types and Activity types are different, but you can dig through the database for old posts and see people finding EmojiReactions federating before they existed. Maybe this has changed.
I had to clear some of them from the DB because they started breaking some scripts I used to detect bots. (This was admittedly brittle design, but I had hard-coded the activity types way back when; this was emergency code written to cope with the Gabpocalypse.) There were some remarks lain made about adding new ActivityPub verbs (something like "People think you can't add new ActivityPub verbs, but you really can.") and that line managed to stick with me but no information on whether there was an accompanying blog post or any elaboration remain in my head.

Crawler, handful of proxies. It was way lower volume when there were only about 9k sites. Not seriously high-volume (scheduler reports an average of 75k reqs per hour) but high for running on a couple of low-tier Frantech boxes. The proxies were actually to avoid blowing up my router when I was running it out of my house but it moved the connection overhead out of the individual workers so it ended up useful. (You can more or less which endpoints it hits and how often by looking at the timestamps on the recent responses. Checks nodeinfo every time, peers is large so it checks that three times a day at most, and if /api/v1/instance fails often enough, it will rarely check it.)
It basically grew out of a script I had been running once in a while to see how big fedi was, I figured the data would be better off public, and after fediverse.network went away, a few popped up, so there's demo.fedilist.com (data-focused, intended to be useful for admins or people that want, like, an RSS feed of when their instance goes down, or there's an RSS feed for new servers, stuff like that), there's fediverse.observer (end-user focused, intended as like a portal), there's FBA tracking blocks.
There are some dead ones. pasture used to run fedi.ninja (which was a fork of the original fediverse.network code; I would probably not have written fedilist if I knew that existed). There's fediverse.space, which used to show a graph of instances' relation to each other but it was taken over by someone else and it looks like it's down now. (That could be resurrected as well but it looks like it requires Elixir, Postgres, ElasticSearch, *Java*, and Chodejs.)

Yeah, PeerTube is a little weird so support is a little spotty. Some of the code for that is written, but it's semi-unused. Last I heard, it's /api/v1/config , /api/v1/config/about , /api/v1/server/stats , but I didn't want to get into special-casing software.

To fix the issue with DMs, I think you can just use the same inbox as the old user. I don't think you have to change anything besides the AP ID. Pleroma might bug a little about nickname, but you could hack it.

Had to stand up a server, was coordinating the setup with someone, fellow old-timey Unix guy. I shoved (as I usually do) some `figlet|tr|sed` thing into /etc/motd, he logged in and wall(1)'d me, I asked him if he remembered talk(1) on Solaris. Turns out that, although it has gone fallow about twenty years ago ( https://wiki.linuxfoundation.org/networking/netkit , http://ftp.linux.org.uk/pub/linux/Networking/netkit/ , needs patches to compile in $current_year), the Debuntu people still maintain it, so you can `apt-get install talk talkd` and it works and you can talk to each other.
I don't think I have used talk(1) since the 90s. I am completely delighted. I had a delightful experience.

Actually, let me stop right there. There was a post here and it has been removed and replaced with this post because it turns out that the patch itself was an ill-advised divergence.
I had a reason to add some stuff to the "bbs" interface but was typing up a post and said "That code changes rarely enough that it probably still applies cleanly to upstream" and I thought I should check that it has in fact not changed instead of speculating and it *has* changed and this patch probably does not apply cleanly because way better stuff has happened upstream (and I think I might have heard about this at the time and forgotten it) so I will have to (at some point in the future) undo this patch and then try to merge the other stuff from upstream because the upstream one can show threads and that's pretty cool. This one just added likes ("l $id"), reposts ("! $id"), and notifications ("cares", which is somewhat ambiguous until you reason that "cares" was shorter than "notifications" or "notifs" or "worries").
Anyway, I love bloat but had a reason to want to not run a browser to interact with fedi and the ssh client was missing just a little bit of stuff.

Kinda, yeah. Most people that write code only know webshit and iOS. They repeat insane stuff to each other like "Pointers are hard and dangerous", they don't know how their kernel works. The low-level stuff is fun (which is kind of the point of a lot of Saint Terry's rants), so you still get a lot of hackers that do it ( https://www.sultanik.com/pocorgtfo/ ), but people that do this kind of thing professionally are rare and the median age is going up, and people that do it because it's fun aren't the same thing as a company or a university having organizational competence around something.
The reason St. Terry kept talking about the C64 was that back then, your interface to the machine was a BASIC prompt. DOS is DOS, you bash commands into a prompt that says "C:\>", but older machines and continuing up through the C64, your interface to the machine was a programming language. People would subscribe to these magazines and they'd have these long code listings, two pages of code: type it into your Commodore or your Atari or your Apple ][ and when you are done typing, you can run it, it's a game. You could buy a tape or a disk or a cartridge and then memorize the command that just loads and runs whatever was in there, but since you were talking to the machine in BASIC, but even then, the barrier was very small: since you talked to the machine using a programming language, you could write a small loop just as easily. If you wanted to do some math that you couldn't do in your head or you wanted to make sure it was accurate, you could add up a sum by just using mathematical expressions and if you wanted, you could very easily just write a small loop that prompted for numbers and then added them up at the end. Even in C64 basic, I'm sure this was small enough to do off the top of your head. And that's Unix and Plan 9, you have a shell, the shell is a very simple programming language, you can write loops.
To contrast, there was this (awful, unnecessary) tool called `rbenv` for managing different versions of Ruby. I was looking through the docs and they wanted you to eval the output of a command in your bashrc, really unusual and kind of dirty and not very safe to do, so when you see that kind of thing, the normal instinct is to look very carefully at it, but then I see the line "Skip this section unless you must know what every line in your shell profile is doing." The "shell profile" is a configuration file you write to set some options or adjust your path or add some aliases: it's configuration for your shell, the expectation is that you have written it. It's not even low-level, it's just a config file. This is a tool targeted at *programmers* and there's this condescending "If you absolutely *must* know" right under the heading "Neckbeard Configuration", the expectation being that a programmer wouldn't be expected to understand a user-specific configuration for a program that runs every time he logs in. What kind of programmer reads or writes programs, some kinda *nerd*? (I swear it's real: https://github.com/rbenv/rbenv/commit/88e59647aee0abe12cd1cd77d2dce6d33af8caef#diff-b335630551682c19a781afebcf4d07bf978fb1f8ac04c6bf87428ed5106870f5R157 . It's not just real but that phrase ended up making its way into plenv and pyenv docs, so it's not just Ruby.)
It is a very, very long way from the expectation that some light programming would be done by regular people that got a computer for games to the expectation that most *programmers* would copy and paste some code that they didn't understand. The one group of people for whom the operating system cannot be opaque is now...copying and pasting code they don't understand from StackOverflow. Someone has to be able to write the shit that people copy and paste, or we'll be reduced to incanting magic runes. How do you fix a magical incantation when it breaks? How do you make a new one?
Hacking together an OS, writing a very simple compiler, these were things that every programmer knew how to do, and they're more of a niche specialty, it's stuff that actually scares a lot of alleged programmers. You don't get a lot of innovation, the code monkeys outnumber the hackers, and technical managers can't tell the difference. Universities aren't doing the research and selling an operating system isn't profitable any more, so there's no money in it, not too many people can do it for a living. It's really easy to get a job copying and pasting CSS and JavaScript, though. Welcome to the Eternal September: this is why your computer is slow and all the software crashes.
