They won't read the manual I keep futilely updating but maybe a full color printout with sane defaults and, er, simplified explanation will help.
Yay #Inkscape
I really do like this #Mackie mixer, though I have to employ a kinda hacky setup to get what I need from it.

- Drink coffee
- Go for a ride (warcycling for #MeshCore #MeshMapper)
- mow back lawn
- watch Star Trek II
- band rehearsal / singer tryout
But alas there is a #cat in my lap so I didn't even get to the coffee
I shall die here, I guess

Once again covering AV for church. Once again, much simpler and straightforward since moving our streaming setup to #Debian and #OBS_Studio.
Kinda bored tbh. Resisting the temptation to install games on the streaming machine.

Once in working to become certified as an instructor for a three-letter agency in a classified environment. Because I was a guest at that site, I didn't have any computer access so I had to make my demo class entirely unclassified (easy) and also without any computer aids (a little harder). I used a paper chart block and just wrote everything I needed out in markers and sketches and that helped me keep it to the important parts. Mine was overwhelmingly the favorite presentation.

Dear actual #BassGuitar players:
The next class for Nashville's #Guitars4Vets chapter is starting up and this time I've been given two bass students.
I have my own ideas, of course, but a) I've never had lessons and b) I started playing in 1999 so I don't really remember clearly how to get started.
What are the most important things to start working on right away, but also ways for easy wins that are fun? The goal is achievement and fun in ten 1-hr lessons.

It's 2026 and we are still doing stranger danger, apparently. I refrained from pointing out that statistically we were all in much greater danger from the law enforcement officer. They rarely like hearing that.

Went for a long morning walk.
Some kids were across the street were waiting for their bus. They waved. I waved back. They asked me if I was carrying a Starbucks cup. I said yes, but it just had regular coffee from home. I asked if they were excited about school almost being over for the year. Yes, yes they were. We waved. I walked on.
On the way home, I got to talk to local law enforcement because of course someone called the cops on me for interacting with children from across the street.

When I was sitting in Ukraine in 2021 reading books about Vietnam (I had little mission and a lot of time), the parallels with Afghanistan (where I spent 2006) were screamingly obvious--just change the names and numbers.
And then Afghanistan collapsed that summer. As it was always going to eventually.
We don't learn. Institutional memory in the military is very short except with the senior leadership; everyone else gets out. And those leaders too often learned the wrong lessons.

So we crashed the #AES Live Sound training expo at #RockNashville yesterday. Neither my wife nor I are terribly invested in live sound in the "large touring concert" sense, but we wanted to check out RockNashville, which is pretty cool. It's basically a massive warehouse turned into live sound practice rooms, storage lockers, offices, coworking spaces, social spaces, etc. On the outskirts of north Nashville, I could see a lot of cool things happening there.

I stopped voluntarily watching "war porn" videos of drone strikes and dropping bombs and tactical breaches and things like that many years ago, long before I retired from Army. It's not good for the soul, and trivializes death.
I watched the video about a dozen times.
If these were US Army soldiers overseas in a war zone, somebody would definitely be going to Leavenworth. Use of lethal force was entirely unnecessary. That woman should be alive.

I watched an awful lot of movies when I was in school (80s to mid 90s). I don't recall learning much of anything from them directly; it was usually a case of "we have read the book so now we will watch the movie" or "we need to kill a day and teacher is hung over"

This is an excellent thread which I can now quote-boost to add #USpol for the benefit of filters.
Many people I know still in uniform are deeply concerned about staying on the right side of international laws of warfare. Believe it or not, we spend a lot of effort to minimize unnecessary killing. That was a large part of my job in 2016-7 in the counter-ISIS fight.
This administration's approach is a a recurring slap in the face to the professional military.

Do they make audio compressors for consumer television enjoyment?
Because audio mixing for TV really sucks ass these days. Movies assume you have a 7.1 setup and want to recreate the thunderous theater experience.
We have line out to simple stereo speakers. And we are CONSTANTLY adjusting volume up and down to hear dialogue / not be destroyed by SFX
We ALWAYS have subtitles on (which is how both kids learned to read) but we shouldn't HAVE to
Ideas?

One should always question themselves. When young, those questions are things like
- What is my purpose?
- Will this bring me joy?
- What do I actually want?
When you are older, it's things like
- didn't I already have this conversation?
- am I having a stroke?
- is there any hope at all?
- where is the nearest emergency room?

I consider myself fortunate to have gotten an early lesson in personal security as a teen on BBSes when a creepy online girl social engineered one of my friends to get my unlisted land line and started calling me.
I got refreshers in the Army--not from the useless reactionary training, but from having government agencies regularly hand over databases of my information to foreign intelligence.
It's not about prevention. That ship has sailed for most. It's about mitigation.

@nprofile…fn2v I've never systematically tested. I will say that when Windows Media Audio (WMA) was a thing, I hated it with a fiery passion and could immediately tell it from MP3.

Just wait* until a critical mass of people can't even do that, but are instead frantically querying GrokGPai or whatever to find out what is happening all around them

"(Anasthesia) Pulling Teeth" (Metallica, Kill 'Em All, 1983)
160kbps MP3 ripped with iTunes in 2016
vs.
#FLAC made with #Asunder this week
Mixed channel spectrogram with #SonicVisualiser
There's an awful lot being cut out of the MP3, and maybe you can hear it and maybe you can't. On this track, it probably doesn't make a difference. But it's a stark visual.

If people can ONLY be reached on Facebook and Instagram and X and Spotify and the like
they are probably people I can do without
there are lots of other people

I frequently shop at Amazon--but then buy somewhere else.

I'm going to try to wean my family off of the streaming services. #Spotify is the one that will get the most pushback, I suspect. I am trying out #Tidal, which I am told is moderately less evil (and pays artists more).
It does carry the important artists.

Having read this really made watching the film a much more tolerable experience. Your version of events is canon and I hate everyone on screen just a little bit less because of it.

It is weirdly difficult for me to find a #Debian administration reference for #bookworm let alone trixie. It's very easy to find old ones.
Anyway, this is auto-built from the latest for bookworm/main

Reading this again a year later through that lens, I can see a lot of it applies to writing as well.

Got a voice mail strongly suggesting that my wallet has been found. This is excellent. I've already replaced the bank cards and ordered a duplicate driver license, but getting my retired mil ID back would be SUPER helpful.
(I'm married; it didn't have any cash in it.)
Plus, I made the wallet myself in 2015 and I would love to have it back.

@nprofile…fn2v Asunder tried very hard but I don't think it was going to get there. Might give that a swing next. Or see if I have another CD drive.

I've been trying to rip a worn CD for several hours. It would have been much easier and faster to steal it from somewhere.

It would be awesome if we could make blanket statements about the military and the oaths that they swear and the training they receive and the laws they must abide by in the execution of their duties.
but
the US military is actually pretty representative of normal Americans. More diverse in many respects but basically just like everyone else
Some of them are great
and some of them suck
So much will come down to small units, how they were trained, and how they are led.

Getting back on my #CanvasLMS bullshit. I don't NEED a job, but I do miss doing curriculum development. I really liked writing and teaching classes in the Army.
Building little courses for fun (and #CreativeCommons) is a nice way to stay fresh. And, it turns out, there are even remote curriculum development contracts and jobs out there.

Musicking on Linux is a lot like gaming on Linux. OK, you tried it--but have you tried it RECENTLY?
I consider myself fortunate to have started messing around with #Linux in 2000, because I have a little perspective on just how great it has become over the years. Especially when you consider the mainstream alternatives.
