It puts their awful views of normal into the spotlight, I agree, but I disagree that this challenges the idea of norms itself.
To call them weird as a derogatory is telling them that their views are bad because they are outside of the norm in a way that is aiming to restrict them. At a social level, yes, this is a powerful way to shape behavior. I'm sure it *looks* effective from the outset because norms are a powerful way to shape behavior.
However, conservative movements then taking this to consider themselves righteously different is something I have seen first hand at least from evangelical Christians. The rest of the conservative movement will easily pick up that move. I have seen the doubling down before.

I think you had it right the first time. I don't think the downsides of reinforcing the unacceptability of living outside of norms is worth it or even necessarily a sound strategy.
Enflaming emotions in the first place is well known to just as likely cause a doubling down, so it's worth questioning if that's actually a benefit. More strategically, this sets them up on having a goal to attain of retaking norms or vindicates them that this is the right goal to pursue. Rejecting use of weird as derogatory works to make that an empty goal to attain.

I occasionally look at games on Steam and it feels like #Linux support in new games is now actually much lower than in previous years. Does anyone else share this thought or have numbers to prove or disprove this?
