@nprofile…z0uk I wonder how long they're going to be made. One somewhat large market was Germany, where until 2024 (!) it was mandatory for certain prescriptions to have "proper" carbon copies, and thus dot matrix printers were basically everywhere (our government calculated that not having to do that anymore, saves 64 million Euros each year).

Given the aversion to LLM-based output styles, do you think the now common #OSR and #NSR adventure format that's heavily bullet-pointed will change?
I mean, not sure what it would change to. Bloviating word deserts are yet another parrot-ish look, and even Mork Borg avoids its chaotic collages for the adventure parts.

@nprofile…8p63 I always thought it follows a similar pattern like the cleric did. So you start with a vampire hunter. Now how do we fit that into a world more medieval than Dracula's Victorian England? Make it a priest. Now, what else could this "cleric" do? Well, let's look at the bible and turn miracles into spells…
And now you're starting with Remo Williams. How do you put them next to knights and barbarians? Make him a shaolin! Well, what else could this 'monk' do? Let's look at some Buddhist legends… Speak with plants and animals?
They should've done this with more pop culture characters, like turn James Bond into the archetype for thieves or assassins.
Although, on second thought, no. Given that Kask is in play here, I'd rather not see how that would've looked back then…

@nprofile…ujrl I suspect that Elmore and similar wannabe-Frazettas of the 80s (Vallejo, Royo etc.) often had live models in their studios, so they were pretty spot on when it came to put every part of their abs on the canvas, but composition and fictional details like armor and clothing was quite lacking – although it was probably one of Elmore's advantages that his arms & armor hallucinations were more consistent than that of others. Fine enough for AD&D. But compared to MERP stalwarts like Angus McBride, you really tend to notice those faults…

This #osr game makes some interesting choices on top of the usual OD&D/Basic-ish skeleton: https://blk-feather-press.itch.io/odd
For example, you determine your social position (your "caste") at the start, and this strongly limits your class choices. Better roll 16+ on 3d6 if you want to become a magic-user.
Clerics don't like magic, there are optional druids who use something more spell-point like and where the actual season matters…
Faux-retro presentation, but still quite readable.

2025-07-28 07:58:05 GMT

I'm reading a bit of the early-onset "heartbreaker" #ttrpg "Beasts, Men & Gods" from 1977 (all typewritten pages with tables galore), and one thing that kinda stuck out was their "combat events" mechanic.
Their combat uses a percentile roll, and if you have a 0 on your "ones" die, that's either a critical success (if the roll succeeds) or a fumble (if not).
So far, so good, plenty of BRP variants do the same.
But they also treat the "9" roll special, as this triggers a combat event, which is its own kind of table.
Now, the actual table is rather boring, defender gets driven back etc., but the general idea isn't bad. Have some kind of mechanic for bringing a bit of chaos into the fight. Could be done like this with the attack/defense rolls, but could also be part of the initiative.

@nprofile…de2h It seems somewhat common in the OD&D clone crowd, but that's mostly mindless mimicry (including the horrible typography & layout).
The last product I physically own that had a lot of splits was OSE before it adopted that name, i.e. "B/X Essentials" and I like having those booklets around. Now, that has a dedicated spells booklet, which actually was very handy to have separate (or duplicate). As it doesn't have an actual box, I have to take care that I don't miss a booklet, though ;)
As for digital consumption, with a properly bookmarked file the advantage of multiple files is mostly about being able to reference two pages at once. Which isn't nothing…
RuneQuest III also had a box with the books split like this. The big advantage here was that it showed that Glorantha was optional ;)

Do you still get "adventure series" in the #OSR space? Like the old numbered ones (e.g. T1-T4). Both for actual sequels, or just thematic elements ("Tales from the world of the Blancmage")
I think I saw this more often in the earlier days of the scene, often combined with covers that actually tried to look like the original TSR modules. But the current era of emphasized text and bullet points seems to go away from that, doesn't it?

Ever learned something surprising, googled it and found that you posted about it half a decade ago?

2025-03-17 10:46:45 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…de2h There's also some RuneQuest influence here, which of course is totally open.
Modern-ish games like 3E tend to be very hand-wavey about that. Want to become a sorcerer? Well, surprise, there's some latent talent/bloodline there. Want to become a ranger? Erm, weekend bootcamp?
Older games were more opinionated and/or arbitrary about that. Want to learn Primary Magic? Okay, but takes 4 years.
Mechanically, TDE1 doesn't have a good concept here, it's all over the place and everything was quickly replaced by the worst skill system ever anyway.
I just thought the setting implications could be interesting. Gatekeep-y wizards sending the inquisition after the druids, "papers please" checks for anyone who carries a two-handed sword etc.

2025-03-17 09:57:08 GMT

Looking at early #TheDarkEye rules from the mid-80s, there's interesting bits on how you can progress.
TDE 1E basically had a Tunnels & Trolls set up, where you increased one core ability per level.
If you didn't get lucky enough to become a dwarf, elf or mage at the start, you still could enter some "classes" at a higher level if you achieved its minimum reqs later.
The "fighter" class was open to you. Only benefit was access to all weapons and armor.
You couldn't become a mage, but you could become a druid. Not a nature priest or celtic sage, but a very ominous practitioner of sympathetic magic, evil eye etc.. (It actually capped your charisma at 10)
So "knightly" weapons weren't limited by birth, but "proper" wizardry was.
Of course later editions ignored all that, but it would make some interesting setting building for retro-gaming or as inspiration for homebrew games.

2025-02-16 11:14:58 GMT

The German Dark Eye #ttrpg in it's second edition introduced "negative abilities", i.e. you didn't have the usual spread of character-defining ones (e.g. D&D's Strength, Dexterity etc.), but also an equal amount of what amounts to mental weaknesses: superstition, greed, various phobias.
It's not too different from the disadvantages you get in a lot of point-buy systems, and as a matter of fact, that's exactly what the fourth and fifth editions of The Dark Eye are doing.
But I still think it's interesting if everyone has at least a bit of a small set of weaknesses, as you don't need to keep notes which character has which or ask about it ("Anyone here bought 'Violent Temper'?") and the experience is closer to D&D's "saving throws". Yeah, the player's rightfully suspect the golden idol on the pedestal to be connected to some kind of trap, but then the dwarf and the rover failed their save vs. Greed.
Hmm, I might need to do an evil #osr mashup of TDE2 and B/X at some point in time…

@npub1ekn…2g2y Tekumel probably has rhyme & reason, but of course can feel like a textbook.
I mean one of the origins of pun-like naming was Leiber, with his Nehwon.

@npub1ekn…2g2y I can understand where they're coming from, it's still frigging lazy. But, well, Ulek/Ulek/Ulek…

Oh boy, what's it with fantasy #ttrpg and calling the planet they're based a corrupted version of "Earth"?
I mean, you got at least
Oerth (Greyhawk)
Aerth (Dangerous Journeys, Gygax again)
Aereth (DCC)
Aihrde (Castles & Crusades, probably from German "Erde" = "Earth")
Ethra (The Dark Eye; in German "Dere", cf. "Erde")
Anything else?

Huh, according to the forums, the old computer challenge this year will be about limiting computer use? What's "old" about that?

I really need a #ttrpg soundboard with all the stereotypical sounds: Castle thunder, Wilhelm scream, red-tailed hawk, puma, kookaburra, crickets…

Going through a stack of old books, found my Cowlishaw #rexx reference.
Anyone still using that language? For bonus points: Not on an Amiga?
