@nprofile…n93w I couldn't quite get it straight in my head. I remembered there was something cool about it, but it got a bit jumbled and I couldn't quite remember the particulars.

24. What's something you learned about one of our community member's creativity from the hashtag games?
I'm doing this from memory, so apologies for mistakes or omissions
@nprofile…kau8 doesn't do rewrites, has published numerous books over several decades, has been a magazine editor, I believe wrote for television for a time, does 3D rendering
@nprofile…hgrn was a working artist for a time but didn't like all that selling her work entailed, writes books full of whimsy and magic that she intends to publish when she's dead, and once painted her town purple
@nprofile…n93w left her old job (PR for an energy company?) to write fantasy romance with a magic system that I can't quite recall but is either elemental or geological, the latter seeming more correct but my memory fails me at the moment
@nprofile…sdq0 writes serials sometimes involving time travel, has made comics of personified math, and mathematical song parodies
@nprofile…p9kg spent years (decades?) building her fantasy worlds before recently starting to self-publish them.
@nprofile…n2fr is a former zookeeper who writes hopepunk novels with cover art that includes cool looking trees
@nprofile…cy6j is a Canadian teacher who writes climate catastrophe with magic, co wrote The Sad Bastard Cookbook, does a podcast, and is part of a collective whose name I can't recall that revolves around a fictional trash TV show that I might incorporate into one of my novels

@nprofile…p9kg @nprofile…yd8z I wouldn't go so far as to say I regret publishing, but I find your disappointment relatable. I tried to keep my hopes/expectations realistic, but still fell pretty short of that in terms of number of readers. I think it's true for a lot of authors (and other creators) in this community. I have a better idea of what to expect now, and I'm just going to keep at it, but I think you're not alone in the way you feel about the publishing experience.

3. Write instructions from the perspective of someone who has never done the thing they're giving instructions for.
Get yourself a powerful headlamp. It's dark inside the skull, but you want both hands free. Make sure the blade is very sharp. Get yourself in the right head space. Relaxing music, maybe a glass of something to settle the nerves. Keep telling yourself, "It's only brain surgery. What could go wrong?"

2025-12-21 12:30:13 GMT

@nprofile…hve9 the shorter length does make it feel more feasible, but my problem is my premises are generally far from fully formed when I start out, and I need reflection time to figure everything out, so I find it hard to imagine being able to accomplish that in such a short period of time. Maybe that could change after I've finished more books.

@nprofile…lggw 😆
One thing that was difficult for me was finding a balance between wholesale rejection, I'll find my own path and don't need to know what worked for anyone else, and putting too much credence in what worked for others, believing if I can't figure out how to get to that particular path I'll just fail.

2025-12-15 13:54:29 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…lggw it's really easy to get distracted by the idea of finishing and lose sight of now (or I suppose at times vice versa.) I think "the right path for you" is also really important. There have been so many times when I became discouraged because I felt like I had to walk the path that had worked for others instead of finding the one that works for me.

2025-12-15 13:30:43 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…lggw for me it feels like a bit of a breakthrough because I've so often floundered and ended up with a bunch of unfinished work, so I'm hoping this is a step forward in my development as a writer. Time will tell.

2025-12-15 13:21:37 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…lggw historically I tend to have an I'll see where things go approach and gradually start to build some sort of loose, adaptable structure. That's pretty much how my current project started out decades ago, and each time I reinvented it, I took basically the same approach. With this particular version, I had structure in place much earlier on, but I'm realizing it still needs that flexibility. I think this approach could evolve into something that works well for me.

2025-12-15 11:22:05 GMT

15. How's your creativity going so far? Do you need help or critique?
My story keeps expanding, which is good, but I need to adjust my mindset. I had everything laid out and thought it was a matter of filling in the detail, but as I write it, I realize there is more to explore. Sometimes I get too focused on finishing. I think it's going well, though. Interesting things are coming out.

#ScribesAndMakers 11. People are often frustrated by the lack of engagement on social media. Do you have any ideas for how to improve it?
This hashtag was our idea for how to improve it. It's not perfect, and some days seem to prompt more conversation than others, but I appreciate the community we have here. We try to come up with interesting topics, take an interest in what people say, and to have an environment where people feel comfortable. And we look to see what we could do better.

It doesn't feel like the same month, but I paid for a domain name, then combined my blogs into a single remodeled website https://www.walterthinman.com
I'm nearing a complete story in my collaborative project with @nprofile…krsh . It will need fleshing out, but I think it has good bones.
And we had a lot of fun, humorous, thoughtful, insightful, and interesting replies to hashtag prompts.
So I'd say the month went pretty well.

The soup is tomato, dammit. Ill luck. As for how I got here, my infamously poor sense of direction. The next question is, how the hell am I getting back? I think I came from that way, but that way looks familiar too. Guess I'll stay the night and see if I can remember any better in the morning.

@nprofile…lggw There are a limited number of readers, and people that do read generally have preferred authors and genres, a long to read list, and limited reading time. It's definitely a real challenge to make people aware that your book(s) exist(s) and get them interested.

#WordWeavers Nov 1. Describe a perfect reader for your story (i.e. who is the story for?)
Her name is Elle and she lives in a converted garage apartment with her newly adopted cat. She already read one of my books, and though she was more interested in the writing in the margins than the book itself, she is an avid reader and might appreciate some of my other writing. Her book has already been (mostly) written, and I don't expect a sequel, but I can still imagine her reading my other books.

#WritersCoffeeClub What is your take on the adverb debate?
I am vehemently opposed to the use of adverbs under absolutely any circumstances. The use of adverbs should be strictly and unequivocally restricted. The very word should be forcefully removed from the dictionary as we gleefully celebrate its removal from the lexicon. Adverbs obviously serve no function as has been astutely observed, so logically the only recourse is to sanctimoniously banish them to obscurity.

@nprofile…ayk9 I think it was 2-3 years from the time I decided yes, for real, I'm going to publish this book, no really I am, and actually publishing it. I can't off the top of my head remember what brought me to the decision, but I think it had to do with having conversations with other writers around here, and sitting with the idea until it started to feel comfortable. I'm curious about it now, and may try to sort through memories and any notes I may have left to see if I can figure it out.

11. You have a time machine and can bring one modern book back to one historical figure/ writer. What person, what book? *
This is a hard question. I know what I would like to accomplish, but I'm not sure which book + person combo would actually work. Would they comprehend the modern language and would they be persuadable? Is there someone who influenced the thinking of so many others that changing that person's mind could prevent many horrific events? How far back to go? IDK

@nprofile…a57y depending on where you want them to be available, you don't have to buy ISBNs. I think you only need them if you want to be on shelves in bookstores and libraries. 5. Do you make your creations available for people to read/view/use? If so, where, and why there? If not, why not?
I published my novel through Draft2Digital and made it available through every outlet they offer. I wanted people to have a choice about where to buy from, and increase the possibility of chance findings.
I made my comic available on mataroa blog. I looked at others, but decided I wanted to avoid large company ownership, and they had the features I wanted.

Alt: Pigeon?
My daughter did a foreign exchange to France in high school (still hard to believe we managed it.) She came back with lots of great photos of all the castles and things, and I enjoyed them all, but for some reason an image that really stuck out for me was a pigeon, which I had printed on a mug.

1. How are things looking for you creatively this month?
I'm going to take thinks day by day, starting with my answers to these prompts. I usually schedule my responses in advance, but I want to slow things down and answer them each morning.
For my other creative projects, each day I'll see what ideas are inspiring me each day and see where I can find time to work on them.

#ScribesAndMakers 12. If you write about craftspeople, scientists, or artists, do you ask specialists, rely on a websearch, rely on your own knowledge, or something else?
I generally rely on my own knowledge and web searches.
But this seems like a good opportunity to remind people about our knowledge base https://write.as/samhelper/knowledgebase

@nprofile…0qap yeah, library, used book sales, and library were definitely my go tos also for a long time. I'm trending more towards ebooks lately, and more often than not, folks from the Fedi community. Seems pretty similar to your situation.

@nprofile…myfn @nprofile…300u bookmarking so I can read it later. I'm reading it now, and even if there aren't any spoilers in the review, I would like to read it without any outside thoughts affecting the way I experience it.

#ScribesAndMakers 28. You're a bored ghost talking to an aspiring author through a ouija board. Who would you pretend to be? Credit: Lydia Vvinters (@nprofile…tzh3)
Probably Douglas Adams. I think I could remember enough quotes (near enough to accurately) to be convincing, at least for a little while.

Thanks to everyone who offered thoughts on today's #ScribesAndMakers question. While we know there is no right answer as opinions and needs of blind and visually impaired people vary, we still thought it was important to discuss. We strive to be inclusive and want people with limited or no vision to be able to participate along with everyone else. It was also pointed out today that writing alt text can be a struggle for some neurodivergent people, and we want to do what we can to help there too

Mutiny uses it/they pronouns, but questions can be posed using you, it, or they. As always, be respectful and we hope you will join us in asking questions and/or follow along to see responses on Saturday the 30th.

#ScribesAndMakers 25. What do you think makes for good alt text?
When I write alt text, I try to think, if I couldn't see this image, what would I need to know to understand and appreciate it? Sometimes that might mean describe lots of details, and sometimes it's more of a big picture thing.

2025-08-24 10:00:02 GMT

#ScribesAndMakers 24. Is there a smell that brings back good memories for you?
Ben Gay makes me think of Mrs Gilbo, my second grade teacher. Not every memory from that time is good, but she was great.

2025-08-23 10:00:03 GMT

#ScribesAndMakers 23. How many pixies can fit on the end of a paintbrush? Does it matter which end?
On the handle end, approximately 6. On the bristle end, one per bristle, unless they're extra thick bristles, in which case two per is quite doable, though not recommended as it often leads to squabbles.

2025-08-22 10:00:00 GMT

22. Do you have a favorite texture? If so, can you describe it?
Maybe soft and fluffy?
#ScribesAndMakers

2025-08-21 10:00:07 GMT

#ScribesAndMakers 21. What cliche best sums up your creative life?
The one where the author writes their first manuscript, gets a call from a big publisher saying how brilliant it is, and gets offered a huge contract to publish the book as well as have it made into a movie, a TV series, and a Broadway musical. The author declines, citing artistic integrity, and smiles smugly at the clerk as he spends the entirety of his royalties on a bottle of booze to drink while working on the next book.

2025-08-20 10:00:01 GMT

#ScribesAndMakers 20. If your favorite show was cancelled without enough time to tell the full story, how would you want the writers to handle it?
There's no good way to handle it, but I think I'd rather see it just abruptly cut off than rushed to a disappointing finish.

2025-08-19 10:00:05 GMT

#ScribesAndMakers 19. What's your favorite two-letter combo? (th,ch,qu, etc.)
I like how p and h work together to imitate f, and how h defers to g, looming silently above. I also enjoy the way ly has quietly persisted after being shunned.

#ScribesAndMakers 18. Which of these would you like best for a weekend creative retreat: lake house, mountain cabin, city apartment, or oceanside hotel? Alone or with others?
I think lake house, although they all sound quite nice. If I'm actually trying to do some creative work and not just socialize, I should probably go it alone, unless it's a collaborative project.

@nprofile…tk9u I haven't touched it in years, but I imagine it wouldn't take me too long to remember how to repeat the patterns I learned. What I can't do is play along with other instruments. I really have no sense of rhythm. I've tried to join in jam sessions a few times and it went poorly.
