Is there a hashtag for that #PHP remote code execution bug yet? Looks like we‘re going to get lot of these because of #AI #infosec research. That‘s not a bad thing in first place, because secure software is good software. But as long as these serious bugs are coming I tend to hide my service behind a VPN very soon.

I bought an app. It was 30€. It works well. This would have been enough a justification 20 years ago.
It‘s got no ads.
It doesn‘t bug me into registering an account (there‘s not even an option for it).
It doesn‘t need a cloud account.
It‘s not collecting my data.
It‘s hasn‘t got AI.
2026 that are 30€ well spent.

What makes me most active about #LLM #AI is its speedy threat to #IPSec.
I consider making my public services hide behind a VPN.
And it strengthens my interest in #OpenBSD. Both because of it's not accepting AI contributions as well as better chances in protecting against LLM pentesting.

@nprofile…xank And I think it‘s more than just technically. For some technical people it‘s hard to accept that success is based on more than technical perfection. That it‘s vision, design, marketing, communication, attraction, financial investment and funding.

@nprofile…xank Well, I think it‘s just emotions, it‘s human motion. I understand that people working on XMPP since ages are upset by the success of Element and Matrix that could have been XMPP if there were the same amounts of venture capital. And I think it‘s ok to criticize Matrix and Element because they have done some wrong things. Nevertheless, they are there and going to stay and that‘s fine. Probably both will have their own use cases.

Gerade Abläufe in Ämtern sind etwas, das m.E. viel eher in ein übliches Process-Management wie ein Ticketsystem passt als in ein Nonprofit-CRM?

For nerds and programmers to understand UX they need to understand didactic. For understanding didactic one needs to understand didactic reduction. You either understand it from within like Steve Jobs did, or you have to learn and study it. It's its own discipline of the humanities. When you don't learn it, you won't make it. That's UX.

On a Mac #MountainDuck definitely is the better #Nextcloud client. Most files will stay remote and are synced on short term only. But choose "keep offline on harddisk" and a whole directory will be synchronized on disk and loaded by apps like @nprofile…9kjr (that rely on disk access) quickly and easily.

@nprofile…3ftj @nprofile…f456 Yes, of course they do. But you'll need to accept that my stance makes sense for me. First, there'd need to be a different device. Second I'm using Desktop Linux for my professional life on a daily basis. F.e. I'm using Evolution (or Thunderbird) on a daily basis, but those GNOME apps supporting mobile layouts can't compete. Ok, maybe they could within 5 years. But it still is a lot of work, I don't expect it to happen. And: Who's going to build that device that's there in 5 years?

2026-05-03 08:05:26 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…3ftj @nprofile…f456 Hm. It's not about waiting for others for me. I'm more concerned about general investment: If I start developing anything useful now, will my family or my employer be able to use it on a daily basis within 5 years? Looking at the last 5 years, I'd say probably not. That makes it hard for me to start anything by now.

I won't buy a Librem 5 as well. But my idealistic me is totally open minded to be convinced to use and develop for the #LinMob approach.
What it probably would need first (besides hardware): An app store having any opportunity to monetize developer's efforts. It's not that I need to make some money immediately, but I would have higher trust into sustainability and competition strength of a #FLOSS app approach if it had any economic incentive.

2026-05-03 06:14:43 GMT

@nprofile…3ftj @nprofile…f456 Thank you for your replies. See, I just think there is. Within that time we would have needed a new, working, affordable device to put trust into developing for that platform. That‘s it.

2026-05-03 05:58:57 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…3ftj @nprofile…f456 I mean there‘s real and current community hardware development (besides that big mass market). Librem 5 is 7 years old now. All current „Linux“ phones are Android based ones. That‘s good actually, because they are affordable that way. But that‘s the way it is.

@nprofile…3ftj @nprofile…f456 Thank you for your work and your reply. @nprofile…f456 @nprofile…wn4u Yes, but let‘s be serious: There is no Linux mobile hardware. Librem 5 and Pinephone both are years old and distributions are missing serious applications. I absolutely support their ambitions ans development, but I don‘t see a working state anywhere close. Maybe state of hardware is even worse than software..

2026-05-02 09:37:20 GMT

Best compromise seems to be the Volla and Morena approach: Distribute Android tech and try to ungoogle it in a way you‘ll have a working mobile in the end. There‘s a really good and huge FOSS app community shipping via @nprofile…wn4u, but seems their life will get hard starting with September.
#foss #linMob

2026-05-02 09:32:28 GMT

To sum it up: If you want a freedom phone you‘ll either get a kind-of degoogled Android phone or low-end years old hardware for Linux mainline or Ubuntu Touch (or Postmarket OS) phones that are based on Android tech and drivers as well.
So: If you want current hardware use Android (and be caught by Google in September) or use a feature phone.

@nprofile…jy3l My two cents: It‘s the attitude of coporations on the stock exchange. If more regular people made regular businesses lots of attitudes would change. But it seems a lot of people prefer being employed by some superpower stock market corporations over starting their own businesses.

The problem with MS #Office is the „office“ paradigm. Expecting to have one suite of applications being able to work for an abundance of real world „office“ use cases, makes it really complicated. What you‘ll get are application monsters having more features than people are able to know, that are very cumbersome to use and that are only maintainable by billion dollar companies.

@nprofile…jy3l May as well be there are some repos more at GitHub. Seems to be structured differently. Can‘t remember to have cloned https://github.com/cocktail-office/TrombiWeb

@nprofile…jy3l Wasn‘t that easy to find those repos. The initial trace was laid via GitHub, but stuff mirrored there was at least three years older.

@nprofile…jy3l Indeed, and indeed, thanks. I mirrored them to my disk as well, but just a regular checkout, no raw repo copy.

@nprofile…s3uu Oh, there are some fine guys at the Gnome project. I'm not angry at all. I just don't like their desktop and their design choices. 😉

Some large #WebObjects applications open sourced publicly: PGI #Cocktail, represented at https://www.asso-cocktail.fr/
Sources are at https://sourcesup.renater.fr/, repos prefixed with "cocktail", last commits from around 2015:
https://sourcesup.renater.fr/search/?type_of_search=soft&group_id=0&words=cocktail&Search=Search
It's a pity I don't speak French, so it's a little bit hard to get what it's about as the source code is French as well.
But it seems to be a administration suite for the needs of #universities. From finances to staff to inscription.

@nprofile…s3uu I‘m quite proud of Gnome though. They managed to imagine a desktop Apple only would build some years later. I don‘t like both of them, but still, it‘s a thing.

@nprofile…2ptr Ok libxfce4windowing-0 dependency is too old on Mint. Probably it's excluded for that reason.

Even #WebObjects #apps look quite ok using that theme. If only tabs would adopt to the GTK stylesheet a little more.

I'm running Linux Mint using the #Xfce #desktop and its #MintX theme. I really like it. Of course it looks retro, over the top metally and thus nerdy, but combined with the functionality of Mint it might eventually give me peace for a #Linux #desktop setup.
