@nprofile…tn4r @nprofile…yl6j This certainly doesn't surprise you as you played with the CNC samples too, but the J2 really came together nicely! It's such an insane upgrade to the C2 in every regard: screen, performance, camera, form factor (size and feel).
I think you're going to really enjoy it.

The Jolla Phone 2 launch event was an absolutely incredible experience yesterday. I had the chance to meet so many lovely people, engage in many great conversations including with folks that will be first-time Sailfish OS users.
Here are is a big thread with some of my favorite photos, in no particular order (aside from this post ;)) #Jolla #SailfishOS

Tomorrow (May 1st) is a holiday, which means free day to stream Budgie 11 dev! Work continues on wl_output support in #BudgieDesktop Services, which I've made good progress on generalizing interfaces for off-stream.

VOD for 5th installment in Building #BudgieDesktop 11 streams is now up at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=399k836lSMU
Good progress made on generalizing a lot of the "meta" interfaces, state management, output manager, etc. Was a deeper rabbit hole than I expected!

I've been wanting to plan and push out content for my personal channel, but I'm aware that plenty of subscribers came for Budgie content rather than...well some of my side projects and interests (Jolla / Sailfish OS, AI, etc.). So I'm "un-painting" myself out of that corner by moving the Budgie content over.

2026-04-25 12:16:42 GMT

It's been a couple months since my last #BudgieDesktop 11 stream (oof) but the sun is here, energy is back, and so are the streams!
Tomorrow at 15:00 EEST: "Building Budgie 11 #5: Finding Common Ground on Outputs". We will be teaching Budgie Desktop Services to speak wl_output (via KWayland) so the Budgie 11 shell (panels, notifications, and more) can find the right displays no matter the compositor. Plan is to land wl_output support, then split it out into a library.
https://youtube.com/live/pmTfDJ8BtjA
Heads up: Budgie streams & vids will now live on the Buddies of Budgie YouTube channel, and the back catalog of Budgie-related videos will be uploaded there too! Once that's done, I intend on uploading them to our channel on the TILVids PeerTube instance. Just gotta see about getting an increased storage quota first!
So be sure to follow / subscribe to either of those if you're interested :)

I had the opportunity to meet up with @nprofile…yl6j again to talk about (and see!) how the new Jolla Phone is progressing, including new iteration that is using tooling and not hand-made.
The tolerances are really fantastic now. No gaps! The buttons and privacy switch felt firmer, with the power button now being a bit more recessed to make accidental presses harder.
Gone is the antenna tape, proper antennas are now around the device. Stronger battery shield. There were some design changes made to the interior (TOH2 side) to hopefully give any prospective TOH2 hardware designers in the community some more flexibility. I'll let Jolla dive into that since you never know if it'll evolve further beyond the iteration I saw.
The Other Half 2 cover is now using an orange resin and not just a white base + color being painted on. It looks _more_ orange as one might expect. TOH2 snaps firmly into place now thanks to improvements to the tolerances.
I'm really looking forward to July to get my hands on a finalized model!

What a day! It was worth waking up at 0545 to head to the @nprofile…yl6j office in Tampere, meeting folks, checking out a CNC sample (so not even a pre-production unit) of the new Jolla Phone. I was very impressed with the hardware.
Got lots of footage, hopefully will be going out on their marketing channels and I'll see if I can get something up on my channel too. The worst case is a killer J2 review when it releases.

@nprofile…5w4y @nprofile…yl6j dkb as in Danske Bank? The banking app itself works (Mobiilipankki here in Finland) but Danske ID doesn't. Have to get one of those TOTP things from Danske Bank.
The alternative would be Jolla reporting to apps that pin code locking is enabled, that is the only issue preventing newer releases from working. Older ones before they did that check no longer work (as me how I know 🫠).

I know there was that whole EU mandate (pre-COVID or during COVID I believe?) for member states to decide on whether or not to stick with DST (but either way, no constant changes).
But man...we really gotta do that. Just spent the last hour debugging an issue that turns out is because of good ol' DST ending on Sunday / Monday screwing up date calculation and comparison logic. And that is even _with_ using standard datetime libraries. :peepoBrickge:

@nprofile…vmzy I appreciate you writing this blog post and empathize with your perspective of not having the energy after a long day at work to...well do even more programming. I struggle with the same thing, especially with Budgie 10 (having worked on it for coming up to 8 years).
Even though it's a different codebase, in different programming languages, the issues are fundamentally similar and all very left-brained. And indeed sometimes the hobby ends up feeling like a job (especially back in the Solus days!)
I'm glad you stepped away rather than burning out. It's not worth it, there are more important things in life, and I'm glad you've been pursuing creative passions.
Much love from myself and the rest of the team. You're still a Best Bud in my books and I'll always be grateful for your contributions over the years, and especially for being there during the hard times when going from Solus to the new org.

All I want is for them to make their existing products not suck. Not chase LLMs (if it's not E2E encrypted with proper isolation, I don't see a reason why someone would pick it over any other provider, Mind2, ollama + Open Web UI, etc.) or for god sake, kill off Proton Wallet.
Give me:
1. Proton Drive for Linux (I know, they're working on an SDK, looking forward to it in 2099).
2. Better photo and content organization in Proton Drive and Proton Photos.
3. Improvements to Proton Pass that make it easier to create new entries with all the different entry types they support. Or make 2FA easier to access instead of creating yet another app (Proton Authenticator).
4. Ability to grab multiple files from Proton Drive at a time without it forcing them into a ZIP file first.
If I didn't know any better, I'd assume KPIs for employees at Proton were measured by how many new things they can release and how many features in their existing products they can avoid implementing.

@nprofile…2jfw Great question! Unfortunately beyond SailfishOS, I haven't used alternatives such as Plasma Mobile, PureOS, etc. Currently daily driving SailfishOS on the Jolla C2.
Not for a lack of interest, just no available hardware to flash Plasma Mobile onto. I'd probably roll Fedora Plasma Mobile from Fedora KDE folks marcdeop and farchord, but that's simply because I already use Fedora :)
You'd have to ask around and check if someone has created a port for your device.
I'd encourage you to reach out in the respective communities, such as the Plasma Mobile Matrix room (#plasmamobile:kde.org) or the Sailfish OS forums (https://forum.sailfishos.org). In the case of SFOS, there's a lot of very experienced porters there such as Mister_Magister that might be able to help!
And yea, absolutely insane that even developers that'd never develop for Play Store would have to register with Google anyways. I wonder how it'll impact alternative app sources like F-Droid, or if they'll figure a workaround with maybe a centralized "developer" or some shit.
Of course, the best workaround is to give a middle-finger to the duopoly in the first place.

Fuck Google.
Remember folks, there are other options to Android besides just iOS. Sailfish OS exists. Plasma Mobile exists. PureOS exists.
They aren't going to provide the same level of experience. You won't be able to install apps that require more and more egregious attestation. You might even have to switch how you communicate and down the line as more developers bend the knee and turn on shit like Play Protect, change who you bank with or the services you buy.
And you know what? That's okay. I'm not a personal liberty absolutist by any means, but lines have to be drawn somewhere. It's my fucking device, I will use it how I want.

Never had the original #Pebble, but really excited for the Pebble Time 2. Will certainly wait to see if anyone in the #SailfishOS community adds it to Amazfish (I would if time permitted) before I pick one up, but great to see a revival of a classic in the smartwatch space.

> Finland has officially broken its all-time heat record, with Saturday marking the 15th consecutive day that temperatures have exceeded 30 degrees Celsius somewhere in the country. The previous record was already broken on Friday with 14 consecutive days above 30 degrees — surpassing the 1972 record of 13 days, which had stood since data collection began in 1961.

@nprofile…5xnh Besides the 18-45 kit lens, the only RF-mount lens I have currently is the TTArtisan APS-C 35mm F1.4. https://www.ttartisan.com/?aps-c-lenses/71.html
Have a SIRUI 35mm F1.8 1.33x anamorphic lens that is on its way though, so that's exciting :) https://store.sirui.com/products/sirui-35mm-anamorphic-lens

@nprofile…5xnh I quite like it. It is my first mirrorless camera and it feels pretty versatile given it's price-point.
I do wish Canon didn't have the RF mount ecosystem as locked down as they do since it hurts third-party lens availability, but it is what it is. The options have gradually been growing and there is always EF lenses and using an adapter (which I have for a 100-300).
Another place Canon missed an opportunity to improve was not providing a firmware update to provide the R50 C-Log 3 and false color mode, instead opting for a weird R50V variant. So Canon L there, but HDR PQ has served me well enough.

@nprofile…r70y I would imagine but can't say I looked into it. Saw the building coming out of the Astronomical Clock tower and was like "damn this is cooler than the clock! I gotta take a pic of this 😁 "
Loved the contrast used in much of the architecture I saw in Prague.

Finally went through a bunch of pics yesterday from a trip to Prague in beginning of June. Going to be sharing my favorites day by day.
Pic today was taken when my wife and I were walking in the rain on the way to the Astronomical Tower. Huddled under an umbrella while I took this pic. Unfortunately it seems some people in front of us had forgotten theirs.

@nprofile…ndy5 I would take it being centered than me having to adjust my neck slightly to the left. Nobody holds a book in their hands clear off to one side in order to read, no sense doing it for webpages either.

2025-07-15 14:48:46 GMT

My fellow webdevs, if you are setting a max width of your content, please consider centering your content (even if just on high resolutions) using CSS properties such as margin-inline. 🙏
Example shown has a max-width of 1260px, on a 4K screen.

My Fairbuds XL stopped charging last night during a Budgie standup. They still refused to accept a charge overnight. This was after the joystick on the right speaker broke off like less than a year into use and I couldn't control music anymore from the headphones or use the joystick to power on / off the device. I had to take off the left cover so I could power on / off the device by removing the battery. Not to mention the battery was already swelling.
Truly a terrible device. Was going to cost me over 100€ in parts (entire new right speaker, plus new battery) and shipping just to probably get hardware that'll function for another year more. So much waste over just a well engineered device.
Decided to buy a proper pair of wired headphones again with the beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro X. Wow are they comfortable, light, and sound amazing. I forgot how good headphones can actually sound.
Please do yourself a favor and never buy Fairphone's Fairbuds XL. If you need wireless headphones, just roll with Sony XM4s or newer. They are objectively better. Otherwise treat yourself to a good wired pair.
