It was very special to spend several years working next to this huge, iconic, working, radio telescope. A telescope featured in HHGTTG ("At Jodrell Bank, someone decided it was time for a nice relaxing cup of tea") and Doctor Who (being the Pharos Project).

Another fun thing is that underneath the "old" surface there was the "Swinging Laboratory". AFAIK it hadn't been used for many years and may have been taken away by now.

Up in the dish it is slightly surreal. It is 76m across. Back in 2002 it was newly painted so was almost like being in a snow field. We were lucky enough to be allowed to climb up to the edge if we wanted. As you heave yourself up the rope the curve is constantly getting steeper. So you find yourself leaning forward. Then, as your head reaches level with the edge, you suddenly see the entire Cheshire plane far below you and you regret leaning forwards!

From between the old and new surfaces you have to climb up a vertical ladder to the working surface. You get a dramatic view of the focus tower looking straight up. If you look closely you can probably make out some radio astronomy receivers up in the focus tower that are pointing down.

You might be thinking that the bowl you could see there was the underside of the shiny white surface. But it is actually the underside of the original surface from 1957. When they upgraded the telescope in the 1970s they put a new surface, with a different curvature, above the old surface. The result is a big cavern between the "old" and "new" surfaces. Apologies for the blurry shot - blame my 2002 digital camera.

At the top of the lift you are still in the tower that rotates the dish in altitude (up/down). So you are still on a structure that has a floor that is always parallel to the ground. But you then have to step over onto this gantry that moves with the dish. Obviously you only do this when the dish is "parked" pointing upwards.

The telescope was originally designed in the 1950s when nothing quite like it had been built - it was the largest fully steerable radio telescope in the world. It was designed by Charles Husband who was a bridge builder from Sheffield. So the structure has some elements of bridges to it.

My trip up the 76m diameter Lovell Telescope was in 2002 after a resurfacing. Here's us waiting for the lift to go up one of the towers. The two support towers were called green and red (that was the colour of the floors in them).

The active deconstruction of the (UK) Labour Party has felt sad for many years now.
I've seen them referred to recently as "technocratic". That seems a poor description to me because they aren't "technical". It is just "managed", like so much of the UK is, with a sense of inevitable decline; that *everything* will only get worse over time.

2026-05-10 20:00:32 GMT

Both Labour and the Conservatives feel like fading zombie parties now.
It is so interesting how many people in Labour just can't seem to really see the problems and will insist it is anything else (dismissing any advice I try to give because they "know better" or "nothing can be done").

This is one of the fish and chip restaurants near me. It was the original Harry Ramsdens (before they became a big, not great, chain). This resturant once described itself as the largest fish and chip shop in the world. It is now the Wetherby Whaler but still retains the grand, over-the-top, chandeliers. There is also a man who plays piano versions of hits of the day whilst you eat your chip butties.

I'm pre-rendering UK constituency hex cartograms as SVG for all the maps on https://hex.constituencies.org.uk/
It is a statically built site. As each hex is given its colour in advance and has <title> text for tooltips, they work out a little bigger in size but still gzip really well and are accessible without any JS. I use progressive enhancement to add nicer tooltips, to allow zooming/panning etc for those with JS.

RE: https://front-end.social/@benschwarz/116445796505977800
The hexes drew me to this post. Obviously. Then I spotted our Leeds wards hex map in the "Research and inspiration" section.
I was a little surprised by the 10kB but then realised that was gzipped and that made more sense.
I'm glad others are seeing that pre-rendered SVG for hex maps is good for multiple reasons.

A few years ago I made this random fish generator for a colleague: https://strudel.org.uk/fish/
Amy had been making abstract graphical fish and we realised that we could create lots of different fish by moving 10 control points (two for the nose, two for the start of body, two for the end of body, two for the start of the tail and two for the end of tail) up and down and applying random patterns/colours.

The sort of argument that "it was ok at the time" or "it was a different time" usually annoys me. It often neatly erases all the people of that time who were pointing out the bad and excuses those who went along with it.
Plenty of people knew the Transatlantic slave trade was bad at the time (not least many of those enslaved) and spent many years campaigning against it. The problem, at the time, was that many people had vested interests in it continuing and that was more important to them.

Oh yes, UK news sites are rolling out warnings about the security risks of VPN apps. At the same time they haven't been pointing out all the security risks created by the requirement to have everyone give their ID etc to any old random website/service. They aren't talking about the Online "Safety" Act vastly increasing the chances of data breaches of people's ID documents.

I'm also convinced that there's a bunch of people who drift to Reform for a perception of them being against the Establishment. Very related to the subset of (then future) Leave voters who I interacted with in 2016 who were voting Leave because of being disaffected by Westminster. The big established parties can't not be the Establishment. I see Reform as the Establishment too but they get to pretend they aren't.

At the IWD march there was heckling exclusively by men. Many were drinking beer outside bars. Ten years ago I happened to find myself cycling towards Dachau as I followed the 1885 route of the first person to cycle around the world. In 1885 it had been described as an "antiquated town" and 60 years later it would be known as one of the horrors of the Holocaust. Dachau was far from alone; the Nazis built a vast network of camps.
It is almost impossible to convey in words how emotional it was.

It is really hard to get 300+ local authorities to produce good, consistent, data even if there is actual legislation telling them the format, column headings, and how to do it e.g. the aggregated Brownfield Land dataset at https://www.planning.data.gov.uk/dataset/brownfield-land You can show it on a map and you quickly see some obvious issues. There shouldn't be points at sea. The ones in the North Sea are due to the longitude missing a minus sign. There's some in the English Channel with the wrong latitudes.

The thing I described at https://mastodon.me.uk/@slowe/112921237587415347 is, to me, effectively what https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pretty_Good_Privacy#Confidentiality says i.e.
The sender (my web server saving the CSV) encrypts with symmetric encryption and encrypts the session key using the receiver's (me) public key. Only the private key belonging to the receiver (me) can decrypt the session key, and use it to symmetrically decrypt the message.

Doesn't the Confidentiality section of the PGP page agree with me?
"The message and its session key are sent to the receiver. The session key must be sent to the receiver so they know how to decrypt the message, but to protect it during transmission it is encrypted with the receiver's public key. Only the private key belonging to the receiver can decrypt the session key, and use it to symmetrically decrypt the message."
The private key is used by the receiver to decrypt, not to encrypt.

Every time I think I understand something even a bit I then find some other article saying "don't do that!" that isn't secure. I was looking at some examples making RSA keys but then I found other articles that said "oh don't use PKCS #1 make sure you are on PKCS #8". And people saying "if you aren't going to do security properly you may as well not". Which isn't helpful.

2024-08-07 14:44:37 GMT

The main use-case I'm thinking of is saving from a simple web form to a CSV. I think this allows individual cells (e.g. email address) to be encrypted and the private key doesn't need to be available to the code writing to the CSV. The private key will be held by the person who needs to read the encrypted cells. I'm hoping it would then be "safe" to share the CSV with relatively random people who could still read the unencrypted fields.

2024-08-07 14:35:45 GMT

- reply

I'm a beginner on encryption so my head is spinning reading about issues and pitfalls. Would this plan work?
To encrypt a cell:
- generate a public/private key
- generate a key Y and use it to symmetrically encrypt the cell text as T
- asymmetrically encrypt Y, using the public key, to make Z
- store Z and T in the cell (with a separator)
To get the value back
- read Z and T from the cell
- use the private key to unencrypt Z back to Y
- use Y to unencrypt T back to the original text

2024-08-07 14:24:38 GMT

Has anyone encrypted fields within *CSV* files? Not XLSX files, CSV.
