Ex #LEGO engineer specializing in #embedded systems and moving all development to (hopefully) slop-free #linux tooling. I enjoy #trains (full scale and Z-scale) as well as #photography and discovering new trails and animals. Generally happy and occasionally grumpy - profile pic is me next to a gorilla statue at the Berlin zoo. You don't want to see the one of me next to the original Ronaldo statue at the Funchal airport ... or do you? #elbowsup

Last Notes npub1d8n84ulztr8unflhds7yvxk7cax8j55e52yv983qqazy02lsfacszy4zd5 rhempel @nprofile…aw2f Does the Black Magic Probe Debug App allow for exposing the probes GDB server as a local network port? The use case for me is that I have a container where all the edit/compile/debug tools live, and I currently connect to OpenOCD over an exposed network port. npub1d8n84ulztr8unflhds7yvxk7cax8j55e52yv983qqazy02lsfacszy4zd5 rhempel @nprofile…lknd This is where I get to show a photo of one of my most special things, a MISB LEGO Women of NASA kit signed by (among others) Margaret Hamilton. https://m.f-h.co/cosocial-ca/media_attachments/files/117/111/322/482/948/249/original/e918c53aa586a3f1.jpg npub1d8n84ulztr8unflhds7yvxk7cax8j55e52yv983qqazy02lsfacszy4zd5 rhempel @nprofile…gfcd Brazil is one of those movies that seemed ridiculously absurd in 1985 and oddly prescient today. Everything is broken and fucked up because of the maximum extraction of anything of value - the world is bare husk of its former self and even the simplest task is mind numbingly complex and futile. So, yeah. npub1d8n84ulztr8unflhds7yvxk7cax8j55e52yv983qqazy02lsfacszy4zd5 rhempel Oooohhh ... This fellow has an interesting channel, and this video about CAN is pretty good ... https://youtu.be/QTTCqGtT6I4 #embedded #can npub1d8n84ulztr8unflhds7yvxk7cax8j55e52yv983qqazy02lsfacszy4zd5 rhempel @nprofile…tlwd Sure, keep telling yourself that. I am sure you miss her sense of humor. npub1d8n84ulztr8unflhds7yvxk7cax8j55e52yv983qqazy02lsfacszy4zd5 rhempel @nprofile…tlwd I've had tinnitus for decades - I notice it all the time but so far I'm coping with it and it hasn't affected my interactions with other humans too much. Well, I don't like loud restaurants or other spaces, and some hearing loss makes it hard to follow conversations in noisy rooms, but other than that I'm just a regular level of grumpy old man. One on one I'm a good conversationalist. At least that's what I tell myself. npub1d8n84ulztr8unflhds7yvxk7cax8j55e52yv983qqazy02lsfacszy4zd5 rhempel #embedded #python #golang I've been using Python as a replacement for shell scripting for embedded development tooling for about a decade, but the dependency hell is starting to get to me. I use PySerial, JSON, YAML, Matplotlib and a few other libraries regularly. Are there any good reasons to avoid Golang for this kind of work? npub1d8n84ulztr8unflhds7yvxk7cax8j55e52yv983qqazy02lsfacszy4zd5 rhempel @nprofile…ml9f You do know about giant hogweed's ability to cause very nasty burns if you get it on your skin and then expose it to the sun, yes? npub1d8n84ulztr8unflhds7yvxk7cax8j55e52yv983qqazy02lsfacszy4zd5 rhempel @nprofile…7rg4 That might be an interesting art concept itself :-) Does it matter how (in)efficient the hardware and/or software is if the viewer sees the exact same artifact anyways? Would the viewer feel better or worse about the art if they knew how much energy or hardware it takes to present the art? Does the visual or sound artifact change if the underlying algorithm is more elegant, visually or algorithmically? Is there a way to convey a elegance and design in implementing of algorithmic art? npub1d8n84ulztr8unflhds7yvxk7cax8j55e52yv983qqazy02lsfacszy4zd5 rhempel @nprofile…ml9f Yeah, Bryce Canyon is an amazing place. We were there on the last weekend before the park closed for the season 20 years ago. Beautiful frost coated the formations and you could watch the low sun track the shadows and melt the frost as it advanced. Absolutely magical. npub1d8n84ulztr8unflhds7yvxk7cax8j55e52yv983qqazy02lsfacszy4zd5 rhempel @nprofile…v2v2 This is why I'm loving Mastodon. I checked out igk and discovered a well-reasoned and sane solution to a problem I have with writing, which is that I keep having to refer to a cheat sheet to get the semantic markup for .rst and .md files straight in my head. That coupled with the fact that you are using Lua as a domain specific language is awesome. It's a lightweight solution for this exact problem. Unfortunately I now have yet another rabbit hole to explore. So thanks. npub1d8n84ulztr8unflhds7yvxk7cax8j55e52yv983qqazy02lsfacszy4zd5 rhempel @nprofile…ml9f Well, if it's the only camera you had with you (this is just after the first iPhones were launched) then yes, it is very cool! npub1d8n84ulztr8unflhds7yvxk7cax8j55e52yv983qqazy02lsfacszy4zd5 rhempel @nprofile…ml9f They are jolly little edible decorations for cakes and salads npub1d8n84ulztr8unflhds7yvxk7cax8j55e52yv983qqazy02lsfacszy4zd5 rhempel @nprofile…8atu This might be a nitpick, but doesn't this just prove the existence of these errors/inconsistencies? It doesn't prove there are no other errors. Is there a risk that after running N policy drafts through a tool, and it finds a few things for you to review, that you start to believe that it is actually finding ALL errors? npub1d8n84ulztr8unflhds7yvxk7cax8j55e52yv983qqazy02lsfacszy4zd5 rhempel @nprofile…ml9f Please keep sharing your adventures - you are living the dream! npub1d8n84ulztr8unflhds7yvxk7cax8j55e52yv983qqazy02lsfacszy4zd5 rhempel @nprofile…wzys I only ever saw this bird once in 7 years in Denmark - it was so stunning I could not believe my eyes. Beautiful images! npub1d8n84ulztr8unflhds7yvxk7cax8j55e52yv983qqazy02lsfacszy4zd5 rhempel @nprofile…ml9f Hey Jason, I've been following your progress and am admiring your shift in focus. It must have been tough to see the industry you love chew up and spit out so many good people because of ... reasons. Enjoy your 17 gallon lifestyle and keep us posted with inspiring stories that remind us of what's really important - the grind isn't always worth it. npub1d8n84ulztr8unflhds7yvxk7cax8j55e52yv983qqazy02lsfacszy4zd5 rhempel @nprofile…wzys Photography in a zoo or some other artificial location (I was at a birding station in Costa Rica a few weeks ago) is great practice for true wildlife photography. I would much rather get my system dialed in where the animals are actually visible so that I can learn about what works and doesn't when doing photography. You have to wait a looong time for a snowy owl even here in Canada - it helps to know their favorite fence posts and telephone poles :-)
