Last Notes npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann I am getting closer to the point where I’ll write my blog posts in HTML instead of mixing html and markdown. With most tags being optional to close a simple search and replace likely does the trick to go from plain text to valid html. And it would give me some nice options to add some special styled elements to posts. npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann A bit late but I found some month appropriate, horse themed decoration for @nprofile…7cv9 :) https://cdn.masto.host/socialscreamingatmyscreencom/media_attachments/files/116/731/305/829/280/530/original/ea5d8dcb6fca12b0.jpeg npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann First yt-dlp, now Electrobun. And a bunch of AI bros confused, kicking and screaming. If I am not being a sarcastic ass for a second who enjoys drama threads over a long weekend (hey, everyone deserves a guilty pleasure!) - I understand the decision. We are essentially talking about a fully untested, unproven runtime build by something that is known to produce sub standard code. I’m still curious of the outcome, as this might be a starting point for legacy systems if done way more responsible. npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann @nprofile…hl5m a friend of mine just got one of those little router PCs off AliExpress with an N5105. He set up OPnsense himself and is good with 1000/500, a bunch of firewall rules but mentioned WireGuard seems slow. I didn’t have a chance looking at the config myself, not sure if everything is configured properly. So I’d say chances are pretty decent :) npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann @nprofile…5qc7 1. That’s very fair. 2: - the clients is a dumpster fire and doesn’t get any fixed while an incomplete rewrite was promoted - accounts across multiple devices (might have been fixed, we dropped out before that) - joining rooms across servers sometimes had wonky behavior - the way they maintain their server implementation is joke (random bits and pieces for migrations, government only optimizations,…) - https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2025/07/im-never-going-back-to-matrix/ npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann @nprofile…5qc7 As I’m not a regular on the Discord server I don’t feel strongly about any option, but three thoughts. 1. I don’t think the change should impact Django’s server as we aren’t flagged as NSFW server. So no one needs to do this. Or do we regularly do streaming etc in there? 2. Matrix was a nightmare to use, we ditched it for Delta Chat and no one ever regretted this (~ 32 people). Delta isn’t a good alternative here. 3. Using an OSS platform for an OSS project “feels better”. npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann it's been a long time that I've seen this screen. https://cdn.masto.host/socialscreamingatmyscreencom/media_attachments/files/115/866/448/793/959/638/original/016a37e2b0a61c33.png npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann @nprofile…x4wz we migrated our company and friends and family there from Matrix about a year ago and it’s been a pleasure. Not a single issue. Self hosted relay. By now 31 users. Some small hiccups the first week are documented here https://www.screamingatmyscreen.com/one-week-with-delta-chat/ but devs were super responsive and helpful! npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann @nprofile…8ffl IIRC it shouldn’t be down to the play store. It’s been a few days that I’d have to deal with it, but back then you could fully prepare a release and get it reviewed if necessary but not immediately release when the review lands, that was a second step manually triggered. So a release in Friday should have been a choice that was made :( npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann What are we using these days as bare metal hypervisor for Windows, Linux and BSD guests? Last I setup a server like this I was paying for ESXi. Not a fan of proxmox. It seems like XCP-ng is something people are divided in if it’s good or not. I’m okay setting up KVM and putting a web interface on top, if the interface works and provides a console so I don’t have to mess with RDP etc on clients for basic administrative tasks. #devops #ops #sysadmin npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann @nprofile…ss2n I would even be comfortable with ssh and rsync, but I have some non technical users, so proper file browser integration etc is a requirement. npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann So far self hosting the #Syncthing discovery server and relay doesn’t go well. The services are up and responsive. The macOS app mostly refuses to use them. Randomly restarting the service seems to fix it at some point. It’s inconvenient that selectively syncing still seems to rely on editing a text file. #selfhosting #selfhosted npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann @nprofile…x759 @nprofile…t4qe I’ve setup a few geo blocks for sites. I’d love everyone over there to hop on a VPN or Tor and continue visiting the sites. This isn’t about you, I still like you all, this is simply about the risk of a poorly thought out law that puts me at a theoretical risk I don’t want to deal with. According to my lawyer it’s not my problem anymore if you circumvent adequate technical measures to comply with the law :) npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann @nprofile…t4qe does it count if I move decommissioned hardware from my company rack one to left to the private rack? :D npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann @nprofile…h9qy looking good! How do you like the speakers? npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann The whole “AI is causing an education crisis” argument feels very familiar. Especially when replacing AI with Encarta or Wikipedia. Maybe, just maybe, we shouldn’t test if children can remember stuff you can look up in 10 seconds but focus on using, applying and transferring knowledge. Wild idea, I know… My physics and math courses (including usage of Wolfram Alpha) didn’t get easier because I could look up the formula. #llm #ai npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann Just a friendly reminder that 54 people with 18 completing the last session is not statistically relevant. At best we can call it interesting enough and require further research. Just because one party uses any little bit of data to hype their stock, sorry technology, doesn’t mean you have to because you disagree with them. #llm #ai npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann “The maxed out MacStudio is a pretty good value for working with LLMs.” Things I didn’t expect me to say about a 12000€ system from Apple… #llm npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann @nprofile…typy yes, Linkwarden supports multiple formats including “readable”. (They can be turned of) https://cdn.masto.host/socialscreamingatmyscreencom/media_attachments/files/114/555/185/917/863/921/original/acf3d55cc65505cc.png https://cdn.masto.host/socialscreamingatmyscreencom/media_attachments/files/114/555/186/205/075/583/original/2f2303a9c23cffb5.png npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann @nprofile…typy If you don’t care about the social features I can recommend Linkwarden. (I’m running self hosted, not cloud) https://linkwarden.app On iOS I’m using My Links for Linkwarden, nice share sheet integration and solid sync. npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann The more I look into MCPs as they are being build right now the more it reminds me of the time people thought giving everyone a user on a production database for queries was a good idea. This is IMHO not a flaw of MCP, but current implementations. It also doesn’t help that there’s an insistence on OAuth 2.1 for HTTP accessed MCPs in the spec which devs aren’t necessarily familiar with (hey SSO tax) and adds additional complexity. #llm #ai npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann One week ago we migrated 21 people from Matrix to @nprofile…g4yp and it has been a pretty good experience. Not everything is working flawlessly but that also wasn’t expect. Plus we didn’t do a lot of debugging so I cannot rule out user error yet. All 21 users are happy about the change. #deltachat https://www.screamingatmyscreen.com/one-week-with-delta-chat/ npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann We are testing #deltachat with 8 users since Friday with a self hosted server. The experience is excellent and people are happy, especially with secondary device setup. So far we ran into a few small issues. - one user had pushes on one device delayed (its push. Remember apples guarantees on delivery…) - a gif didn’t post but only the first frame (iOS) - taking a photo doesn’t add it to the message, using the gallery works (Android) npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann [Salty rant incoming] Apples amazing “select a browser” UI the EU forced on us was the reason my dad had Firefox installed and set as default, passwords not auto filling and him being confused why he cannot sign in to Sky using a QR code as he’s used to. I have not seen a single good thing come out of this stupid legislation but for a handful of tech savvy people who bought devices tied to an ecosystem they don’t want or like. npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann @nprofile…m624 there was something wrong with external SSO for a long time so I had a different calendar on two iOS and two macOS devices. Nuked exchange from all devices as I missed more meetings than just checking in the morning and setting two alarms. Glad only one client uses Office365. Two would be the end of me. npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann @nprofile…m624 my favourite bug that this brought us is that outlook logs me out of the web interface every few hours telling me “your account is locked” till I hit refresh and authenticate via SSO again. npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann A surprising amount of realism and honesty considering the amount of money they got in the game and the hype they tried to produce. #llm https://finance.yahoo.com/news/microsoft-ceo-admits-ai-generating-123059075.html npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann “It wasn’t foreseeable that Cryptocurrencies are a scam” “No one could have predicted that NFTs are worth nothing” Next up in the most recent list of things “no one saw *that* coming” https://futurism.com/openai-researchers-coding-fail #llm npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann Construction now cut our neighbors Internet cable. They are on a roll. Two times Internet, one time power within three weeks. They didn’t have this kind of problem in the newer parts of our town where cabling actually follows code. Guess my work day starts with deploying our emergency LTE router again. In three years since buying the router it was useful four times. Not once to us :D npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann @nprofile…m624 it feels like Django and Rails sit right in the middle between two generations. One who started their career with J2EE and still uses it longing for retirement and one that grew up in an ecosystem where a new “best, only use this” web framework is shipped every six to twelve month. I can see why the later asks this question. npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann @nprofile…h9qy why is their browser relevant when it comes to search? npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann @nprofile…t4qe we are planning to go live with a non profit project hopefully providing financial aid to organisations supporting children and animals. I did the assessment and read the guidance and got no idea if it falls in scope. I could argue both ways. I could pay 1-2k out of pocket to the existing development costs and ongoing maintenance costs or I just geo block the UK and move on with my life :/ npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann @nprofile…m624 I enjoy it far more than Overwatch and I was playing since OW beta and got about 4000 hours in the game. They learned a lot from what Blizzard did wrong, especially in OW2. Hero’s and their abilities are actually differentiating and they don’t try to balance every single hero to the same number but just let them do crazy. Destructible environments make a difference. Plus the ban system starting diamond fixes balance where it matters. Also tons of small quality of life improvements. npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann Marvel Rivals on Linux runs about 40-50fps slower than in Windows 11. It seems mostly CPU bound. And the last update on January 8th was a dumpster fire on Linux. I’m happy they support it at all, but I wouldn’t play competitive on a Linux box right now. I hope this will be a bit smoother when the initial rush is over and they find some more time for bug fixes. #marvelRivals npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann I didn’t have “anime waifu jail” being one of the first commercial products that actually seem to be designed to respect a users privacy and allow local LLMs to be used on my bingo card for 2025… #llm #ai https://www.pcgamer.com/hardware/tiny-anime-girl-cyberprison-shown-at-ces/ https://www.code27.co/ npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann Sigh. My oldest friend convinced me to finally build a keyboard… this will be expensive, tedious and I’ll have to remember how to solder. npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann @nprofile…t4qe @nprofile…73zh also display nicely in Ivory on iOS :) lovely! npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann @nprofile…32kp the reason I’m asking is Mastodons design around what people consider a direct message and what I’ve seen the expectation for these messages is. I really like this idea and want to see it work. I was just curious if it can be designed in a way they might address this and put people who are sensitive to it at ease. npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann @nprofile…32kp the read permission will always be required I assume? npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann @nprofile…74gf I actually found some pretty good blogs reading through uses.tech and usesthis. Most people have a /uses page linked and a blog on the same domain. npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann New article kicking off a small series of posts talking about self hosting authoritative DNS and building a small CDN. https://www.screamingatmyscreen.com/self-hosting-dns-and-a-cdn/ This will be a fun few weeks :D #selfhosting npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann The new iPads look like a pretty good upgrade, especially the display. But we are five or six years in and Apple still refuses to fix the software side to make them actually useful but for some niche application :/ If they’d announce macOS support at WWDC you could count the minutes between the announcement and me ordering one with the new keyboard case… npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann I’m testing some widgets on my iPad and there are some I really like. But the iBooks one is… confused. It’s not Wednesday, so I surely didn’t reach my goal. I’m certain I a, reading a book… My favorite one I have on all devices for some time is the photo widget. Random memories just make me for a better “screen unlock” experience :) https://cdn.masto.host/socialscreamingatmyscreencom/media_attachments/files/112/370/005/572/279/995/original/430d5f7e43cf770b.png npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann Bubble Tea for #golang is the first TUI library I touched that doesn’t make me regret writing a TUI. The examples, documentation and video tutorials also make it super easy to get started or stitch together the parts you need. Overall this is just a really good library from a developer perspective. npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann @npub1wfj…2ewz I see. That sounds like a wild and disruptive concept. I wonder if any VC or PE is interested in funding development in this area. npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann @npub1wfj…2ewz “real economy”? You’ll be able to summarize it with - pick any mainstream language - deploy on one server - deploy Postgres on another server - double the number of server for redundancy So many systems I’ve seen lately could run off in memory SQLite and a replication to a CSV file. Yet there’s a relational database, a document database, a key value store and four services deployed on k8s for all 100MB data and 2000 customers. npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann @npub18yv…xxyn and if they run into you you’ll likely not even notice while their car is severely damaged - these old Mercs were tanks :) npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann @npub198t…hasj @npub14cd…zqep oh I absolutely agree. But I don’t think we can roll back most of the laws written because people were upset with five companies.:/ npub1dev6e64lanmeaj8gzg5t2gldnvvda0cju80lug6fnlrcre3fq5rse7nj0z Timo Zimmermann @npub14cd…zqep @npub198t…hasj I understand where you are coming from with this, but I’m okay with the stupid IP blocks companies use to comply with regulations and laws considering alternatives. The alternative would most likely be (when GDPR became a law I was sitting in more than one meeting discussing this) everything is behind a login with actual ID verification for many larger entities and smaller ones would likely rather risk a fine or use a shady third party centralizing this information.
