I feel humbled by the attention and publicity my last post on #LLM screening by the #Debian DFSG team has garnered. Thank you all for your positive feedback! 💜 It shows me that the FOSS movement is *not* lost.
Debian has chosen where it wants to go and that allows me to better allocate my free-time.
The DFSG team has implemented an opt-out method for receiving the LLM generated spam but it will still generate it for their internal use as is their right by the GR result: https://salsa.debian.org/dfsg-team/dfsg-new-queue/-/commit/6790ee440eef80c25f4025386eee40cd25040715

For now, I will no longer be uploading to the #Debian NEW queue.
And yes, I will now go outside and do something nice instead of trying to argue on mailing lists about #LLM use in #FOSS. Maybe do the same. The weather is great outside. :)

The new semester started and this year I have added nine slides for my intro lecture in C++ about the use of LLMs when trying to get better at programming.
It's not on the slides but I may have mentioned the thing with fascist billionaires and pollution of our planet in my verbal commentary on the topic.
No ALT text for the attached PNG renderings of the slides. The text in the images is the text of the post itself.
This is a thread with my nine slides I presented yesterday.

If you haven't tried the #fish #shell yet, maybe give it a try. I spent *a lot* of effort to configure #zsh with automatic command completion, fuzzy history search, git integration, completion suggestions and so on (even configured #atuin). But since I now switched to another computer (RK3588 #MNT Reform) I just apt get installed fish on this new setup and I'm a bit puzzled because it seems that it does everything i want — out of the box? Zero configuration? Wow 😍

@nprofile…vf35 Wow, crazy. I'm volunteering for Greenpeace for over 10 years, so when we lobby for all kind of sustainability-related stuff in our city (and elsewhere) we hear all sorts of shit from people but I never met somebody with this kind of argument. WTF...

What you do does not happen in a vacuum. If you say "what I do is not political" then you say "i'm okay with the current political situation" and that's a political statement. This topic just came up in debian-devel@ and David Kalnischkies shared a poem by Palestinian poet Marwan Makhoul with me:
> In order for me to write poetry that isn’t political
> I must listen to the birds
> and in order to hear the birds
> the warplanes must be silent.
https://allpoetry.com/poem/17661332
This hit me deeply.

@nprofile…y789 Yes, on the way forward we are going Madrid - Badajoz. We live with relatives in Algarve, so the way back we'll do Loulé - Sevilla by bus. We left Portugal via Vigo last year but decided against that option this year (even though we didn't know about the replacement buses). We are only a bit worried about the replacement buses between Latour-de-Carol and Barcelona on the way forward. No idea for how long those are going to last. Lets hope that goes well but at least we speak the language :)

@nprofile…y789 I had no idea that #CrossBorderRail had T-Shirts! Just got two of them for me and my mate. We travel from Germany to Portugal and back in a few weeks together with our five-year-old. We've done the trip a few times now but are trying out different options to get there every time. And this time we will even be able to wear appropriate T-shirts! :D

Current #Debian :debian: yak 🦬 shave: for #Hurd support in mmdebstrap I want testcases. To run Hurd tests on Linux I need to build a QEMU VM. I do this with debvm which needs support for Hurd but to get that we need DPKG_ROOT support in openssh (and pam, sudo, ucf). But to implement that we need a systemd-tmpfiles implementation for non-Linux. seedfiles is such an implementation and its maintainer has been extremely helpful with making this happen.

Yet another really well written critical text regarding #LLM and #GenAI was just submitted as a GDC to the #Guix project. This is something we should be keeping an eye on in #Debian as well. https://lists.nongnu.org/archive/html/guix-devel/2026-05/msg00164.html

@nprofile…h0ux I think that would be physically possible but it would not be something that I'd be interested in working on. I would like to have the trackstick at the home-row of the keyboard like in old IBM thinkpads. :)

@nprofile…h0ux Yes, midfavila mentioned it last night and potatoes immediately pinged me about it. I have the Sprintek SK8707-01-005 here and just ordered another RP2040 which i want to flash with QMK to attach it to the Reform via USB. The bloopy bean uses a hall effect sensor with a magnet above it held by a 3D printed "spiral". We are very space constrained and even the Sprintek stem barely fits between the keyboard keys. Right now, I cannot think of a way of how to combine the bloopy with the kb.

My RK3588 #MNT classic Reform just arrived back from repair. As usual, their shipping box fits perfectly into an Eurobox. Very satisfying! Even more satisfying was what I found inside the box: this looks like new or can you spot that anything got replaced after I fried my LTC chip? Even my poor soldering of D30 seems to have been magically fixed up? And there is a new WiFi antenna! Thank you so much for your work @nprofile…h0ux ♥️ I hope I'm not missing any of the things you fixed up with my machine?

https://reform.debian.net has been updated for Debian Trixie and needs more testing to iron out the remaining bugs before the official release of Debian :debian: Trixie. If you own a MNT classic Reform or MNT Pocket Reform you can help by testing the full system images 💾, Debian Live 💿, Debian Installer 🥾, the repository 📦 and Grml 🛟 and send bug reports (maybe with a patch against the respective git repository?) to [email protected] to the Debian BTS or to the issue tracker on salsa. Thank you! ❤️

Currently updating the images and repository on https://reform.debian.net for the upcoming Debian Trixie release. Thanks to the insane generosity of [email protected] I can now test this on a RK3588 @nprofile…hkdp Pocket Reform myself. And you know what? It just works. Out of the box. This platform has truly come a long way. It feels very mature and I believe it is a device that I can truly recommend to fellow GNU/Linux users. This not just a machine to tinker. This is a reliable daily driver.

@nprofile…4hm5 just announced the first release candidate of the Debian Installer for Debian 13 "Trixie". 🥳 https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2025/05/msg00003.html
Thanks to @nprofile…r04e it includes flash-kernel support for the @nprofile…hkdp MNT Reform 2 with RCORE RK3588 Module.
You still need a kernel with the RK3588 patch stack by @nprofile…20mv but at least you don't need to patch flash-kernel anymore. 😀

@nprofile…8kev In any case, I sincerely hope that you find a place in FOSS that values your work and where you feel motivated to contribute, even if that should not be Debian. :)

@nprofile…8kev I see and I think I can understand. For myself I think I have found the niche where my work is appreciated enough such that I'll stick with Debian but I also see all these large changes happening which seemly steamroll over things that some people find very important. Heck, I might even be guilty myself of being the driver of such a move as I am pushing the unshare backend in sbuild and have little love left for the schroot backend.

@nprofile…8kev You will be happy to learn then, that part of our efforts at the crossbuild/bootstrap sprint will also be working towards making Debian more into a Yocto competitor. This means that independent of what Debian decides for the baseline of architecture X, in the future, you might have a very easy time to bootstrap your own custom architecture from scratch with the toolchain options adjusted to fit exactly your target processor. So maybe instead of ranting, drop by and help? :)

@nprofile…zwgs I'd like to echo this. There exist many great open hardware projects out there that you can clone and get manufactured yourself with your own modifications. There also exist many laptops for normal day-to-day tasks. To my knowledge, the MNT Reform is the only device that sits at the intersection of those two sets of devices. You can literally clone the whole device yourself. You cannot do that with a Framework.
(I too prefer a small shop of lovely queers over a venture capital firm)

Turns out that at https://fkcaps.com/custom/ one can buy custom color and custom label low-profile keycaps for the kailh choc brown switches of my MNT Reform open hardware laptop. I might've gone a bit overboard but I really like how colorful my keyboard is now and how easy it is to make the Reform my very own custom computer. 💻 ❤️

@npub18hd…kf64 @npub18hk…zfpv @npub1xzp…x4fk In your video at 8:03 one can see the terminal just before it shuts down. This might indicate that your system didn't actually "die" because the batteries were empty but the software you are running (gnome or upower) shut it down when it *thought* it was empty. But for the LPC to learn what 0% battery means, you have to really let it "die" from the batteries being empty first. I'm asking because my a311d reform definitely lasts longer than yours.

@npub18hd…kf64 The Reform has been my only computer since summer 2022 and I'm not looking back. Instead of listing the things that make all the normal laptops different from each other (cpu, ram, graphics) I'd like to see a focus on the things that no other device of this type offers: repairable, modular, upgradable, full schematics, firmware sources and CAD files. I can 3D print new parts, can buy individual lifepo4 battery cells, modify the firmware of every component, switch the CPU module...
