Do you like it when games don't recognize you've just saved the progress and show you a scary warning as you try to exit?

If your Godot project uses the Forward+/Mobile renderer, this bit of shader code will pass just fine. But if you switch to GLCompatibility, it will rightfully fail to compile! 🤬

@nprofile…rqqh Note that for me Godot reports much lower memory usage than the OS. I think it showed something around 3 GB in Godot, while system reported 5.5 GB for the running app.
Still, there is no good reason for your kind of jump either. What do you have there, just one column with a short string? 1.5 GB on that would be bizarre.
All the data that I add to the Tree is already in memory in scripted objects, and that fits into the first 1 GB. Then the Tree somehow needs 4x that.

Jesus, the Tree node in Godot uses 4.5 GB of memory on ~73500 entries. The app's footprint, for this amount of data, is 1 GB without the Tree, but jumps to 5.5 GB when I populate the Tree.
What the hell am I supposed to do about that :/ Guess I'm doing a fork sooner rather than later.
Since I make my apps FOSS, I don't really like the idea of using a custom engine build, as that creates a barrier for external contributors (as unlikely as that may be).
But... issues need to be fixed.

@nprofile…ned5 I think the main problem with the first one was that neither the tech nor the market were ready. The pricing was already a huge filter for this attempt, but there was a demand for a non-Windows gaming PC that they were all set to answer. Now it's as like to never come out at all due to the associated costs.

Awful people can be behind any project. And not many choose a strong position against AI polluting their legacy. And I don't really fancy making my own pocket engine.
Every option will take some time to get up to speed, and that's scary. For now, I'm stuck with the old version of the engine that I know (and still enjoy using). Maybe I'll fork it for my own needs.
That's not really long-term, I feel, though people make games with all kinds of "outdated" tech anyway.

For another, we clearly differ in our views on the modern digital plague, as the engine has been and will continue to accept AI contributions and their new asset store does and will continue to accept AI assets. Which makes it impossible for me to use newer versions of the tool.
So what to do?
Feel like one of those devs who can't give up Unity because all their eggs are in that basket. 🙄
And picking tech these days...

With that, I do find myself in a precarious position. Most of my expertise is based around one game engine. That's where I'm most proficient...
For a number of reasons, I can't keep associating myself with it.
For one, people running the show have shown zero interest in rebuilding the bridges that they have burned and healing the damage that they have done. This makes everything they touch feel inherently unfriendly and toxic to me.

This year marks 7 years since I quit my old job and decided to work in gamedev (independently, for starters). In a couple of months, in 2019, I will launch Godot for the first time.
As it turns out, my biggest achievement of these past years has been helping others be, or become, a game developer.
Through the tools that I've helped to create, and by being a part of the community for about as long as I've been learning things myself. And I love that!

@nprofile…6fuf I dunno, but I think Valve pretty much gave up on "open secrets" like that once the number of developers on the platform became unwieldy. If it's visible, it's public.
I remember some devs would "leak" the dates for the next big sale, for example, but then it became absolutely mundane knowledge because it's not really a secret when you share it with thousands of people across the world.

Someone should make an asset pack with custom node icons for Godot, fitting the style and using official colors for 2D, 3D, Controls, etc. 🤔
I like customizing things, but making custom icons every time is yet another sinkhole where time spent is not really paying off IMO.

There should be a term in UI/UX for giving configuration presets loaded names.
Comfortable? For whom? Are other options uncomfortable? Is "Standard" supposed to mean "what others are doing" and thus "Comfortable" is "but we're doing it better"? Describe the option, not how you want me to feel about it.
Same for calling some preset "Modern" in some software. Am I supposed to feel like an obsolete dinosaur for not using it? I hate being manipulated like that :/

@nprofile…8epn I am saying that people started to spell doom for the project like AI companies sponsoring Blender hasn't already been the case for a long time. It was a misplaced anger over project receiving much needed funding with no strings attached.
I think it's much different from integrating "AI" into a project. I think many people don't understand how unstable funding is in FOSS. I think many throw "better it not existed at all if it can't exist without AI money" too easily.

Worth mentioning that Signal is a "type" in GDScript very superficially. It is not backed by a native type in Godot. It's just an interface for some hashmaps.
Engine uses strings and Object methods everywhere, just like GDScript in Godot 3.x did.

Signal declaration in GDScript is just a suggestion.
You can emit any signal with any parameters, and as long as connected methods expect the same exact parameters, it will never err. Oh, and awaiting that signal works in every situation.
There is basically no type safety when it comes to signals.

@nprofile…nclx There isn’t even a need for deltas and multiple revisions. Just noticing that files have been modified, removed, or added and rolling back on demand to a predefined state.
Currently files are just overridden from a reserved copy, and under the hood even a VCS would do pretty much the same, it just feels rather inelegant.

I played Ace Combat 7 for 10 hours before I realized that the machine gun is not going to be unlocked — it's always available!
The reason for my confusion is that GUN is indicated with "---" where the ammo is for other weapons, and "---" is used as "no info" throughout the UI. GUN is just infinite...
That's 17 missions of the campaign without firing MG once!

Controls in Godot 4.7 will have enforceable maximum size 👀 It's very useful, though I'm wary of the complexity of changes and the use of AI tools in the related PR.
GUI sizing is already incredibly complex (and brittle) in Godot...

@nprofile…udln Anyhow, my original point was that an image so unstable would be considered a buggy mess 20 years ago. The reasons at the time would be different, as would be the tech. But we'd still criticize games in this kind of state.
And yes, Fallout 4 was a buggy mess at launch with numerous visual bugs.
I don't have top-of-the-line HW. I am bound to play games at unplayable framerates or with constant ghosting from upscaling. Budget or not, games today scale down terribly. And we accept it.

@nprofile…udln This specific recording (as seen in the YouTube video, not my clip) seems very choppy. And it's running on Series X, as per Microsoft's demand for this preview.
I don't know if it uses upscaling already, but in all likelihood it does, with a Quality preset of some sort. No AAA game now runs on consoles without it. Performance mode was locked for the preview.

I'm old enough to remember jumps in quality from one console generation to the next where nobody had to tell me that there was a jump. I just saw it with my own eyes.
But the push towards photorealistic, or at least realism-inspired, visuals has led the industry into a corner, where you need to put two screenshots next to each other to understand where the improvements are this time. You need to be told where to look.
That's really quite sad in my opinion.

There is another thing that bothers me that comes up in Skill Up's video about FH6. They make a point about not noticing visual quality/fidelity improvements until they started to directly compare with the predecessor.
And that's a huge problem with modern graphical improvements. We have long since reached the point where visuals of the next game do not standout as something groundbreaking on their own.

I know it's a preview build, but I've been told FH5 does the same thing. 20 years ago this kind of flashing and pop-in would be considered a buggy mess. Today it's just what ray tracing and upscaling does to games, and is considered modern visuals.

I use a lot of packed scenes in Godot, and it bothers me that nodes in those scenes are readily accessible early on, but Godot offers no convenient hooks, like onready, for this specific case, and I have to resort to handling a notification by hand.
So I made a proposal

The idea is simple. When it's a script attached to a packed scene, instead of `onready` you'd use `onscene`, and that removes the need to add ready-related safeguards when accessing annotated properties.

I talked about putting ad-hoc plugins in Godot scenes before, but now I'm spreading my tricks into @nprofile…k2av projects 😈
This is a custom toolbar added by the edited scene, and removed when the scene is also removed. Exposes a number of controls for quick previewing of STUFF!
What's neat is that the toolbar exists in the scene scope, it can directly interact with all internal elements, call APIs, adjust properties — all without the runaround necessary for editor-scoped plugins.

I guess you'd put a list item in a scene, and manage the list in the main scene?

When designing UI screens, do you have bigger scenes or more smaller scenes?
I tend to lean towards factoring out anything I reasonably can. Helps to compartmentalize elements contributing to the thing, so I can worry about them solely in isolation.
E.g. if I have a list of something within a larger scene, not only items are separated (which is basic, since they are repeatable), but the list itself is likely to be its own component as well. With explicit API for managing items.
Am I weird? 🤔

@nprofile…6t4t @nprofile…g4cq I've tested it with a copy of the repo later and rebasing worked fine. I believe a cherry-pick would be necessary if this was indeed a completely unrelated commit. But I started it from the current top of the main branch, so it was chronologically perfectly fine for a rebase.
Thanks for reminding me of reflog. It shows that I've visited two older commits and then returned to the top of the main branch every time. So this anomaly is still an anomaly!

The Roottreemania is done! Like with all logical/deduction games, it's tricky to be sure you're on the intended path to the expected conclusion. Such games tend to leave contradictions to prevent you wandering off.
I feel like in the final stint of Roottreemania, a lot of things were open to interpretation where even the game's own explanation affirms things you never could but says "we don't know for sure" about other similarly vague things.
Still, nice story-driven puzzle!

Wikipedia and GitHub have those, for their own pages. But I wish this was just a thing that the browser does for any link on any website.

The problem could've been avoided if the array's reference/pointer was hashed, not state of its contents. But that would lead to other issues where people would expect a similarly shaped array to match the key, even if it's a different array.

If you're using an array as a dictionary key in GDScript, be careful! Mutating the array will make it impossible to access the original key-value entry.
This is because dictionary keys are hashed, and so array's state is hashed when you create the entry. If you then change the array, hashes won't match.
The array is still referenced in the dictionary correctly. You can see it being mutated correctly. But trying to read the value will fail, and trying to write the value will create a new entry.

I wish forward compatibility was considered for breaking changes. Kind of like modern tweens were backported to 3.x as an alternative.
The idea that everyone will always be updating their Godot version is flawed.

The chatbot “fixed” some words in his input, but who is to say that these words required fixing? Maybe the name was supposed to be Fred Fintstone, if this was a real scenario?

Some years ago we found a person on fiverr who would turn your photo into a cute frog drawing. One of my colleagues thought "what the hell" and ordered their services, and got this amazing profile pic for just a couple of bucks.
There's an idea that if you cannot (dubious) draw, but want to share some of your other talents, it's reasonable to fall back onto gen. "art" to complete the package. Like an itch.io cover for your audio pack. Nah, you just need 5 bucks and a practicing craftsperson.

@nprofile…elnd It’s great mechanically! There are some user experience problems, and writing is (perhaps intentionally) on the level of banter at an actual DnD table, but playing it is very enjoyable! And I’m also curious about the new HoMM game 👀
