2 months and 2 follow-ups later, Kaiser is insisting that I pay $340 for an annual wellness visit that, without any warning, was turned into an "office visit" (code 99214, which is supposed to be used for "moderate level of medical decision making").
The PA told me: "I won't sign your form, and if that's what you came here for then we can skip the tests, but while you're here do you have anything else you want to talk about?"
Then I get charged $340 for answering her question? What a scam!

I drove to Portland and got the form signed by my PCP this morning (this time I consented to Abridge to see it in action, but the screen only indicates that it’s recording audio; it doesn’t generate live transcripts or anything) ✅
But then a $340 bill for the useless PA visit landed in my inbox so I spent 30 minutes calling Kaiser again to nicely ask that this be counted as one of my “preventative $5 copay” visits (I think everyone gets 3 per year?)… this is such a ridiculously broken system 🫠

Also, the PA asked me if I consented to transcription by some #GenAI tool called Abridge without showing me anything (no privacy policy, etc.) so I refused.
They asked me why and complained that this will only take up their time, claiming “it’s not really AI, my husband is an engineer and he said they shouldn’t even call it AI”. The Kaiser PA didn’t want to sign the release form for my Oregon Tradeswomen program application because my left hip issues (from falling off my bike… twice in 2 years) are in my medical records and they’re worried about me lifting 50 pounds and bending/squatting repeatedly 🙃
Apparently even my primary care physician can’t sign this, because it’s simply not something they do; they told me to google for places that provide “functional (or physical) capacity exam” services 🙃

The other day a woman at my indoor cycling class asked me “how do you grocery shop on a bicycle?” and I was so taken aback that I couldn’t quite express how much I can carry in my Timbuk2 Tuck backpack. #BikeTooter
So today, I took a photo after my grocery trip in case anyone else asks me again. But then I found another bag of limes/chiles serranos/a carrot buried at the bottom so I had to take another supplementary photo 😂

REALLY!? I'm so excited that you're interested in natto, because most everyone non-Japanese hates it 😂 I'm still working through propagating my store-bought packs (which is the easiest way to start if you have access to such a store), but I'll jot some notes down and send it your way once I start experimenting more.
Also, I started making tofu for the exact same reason (reducing plastic waste) so I'm very much rooting for you. Go Kat! 🙌

Honestly I respect all the Portland runners and bikers, because I hate city running and very scared of all the visually obstructed intersections (though I know they’re working on daylighting)… I’ve been to a few NOPO Run Club and Deadstock Run Club runs, and it’s so hard for me to relax and get into my running zone/speed, because of course I have to slow down and stop every single block to make sure I won’t get hit by cars, e-scooters, etc. 🥲 (though running in big groups is helpful for this!)

My parents always ask me to recreate what I ate in Mexico (this time, carnitas tacos from Quiroga in Michoacán, which was assembled in my hand as the very awesome man first handed me a tortilla, then setting the carnitas in it, in order to persuade us to buy from his cart 😂), so I bought them a molcajete and made salsa to go with the carnitas from our local carniceria! 🌮

Please feel free to entirely ignore this side note but on the extreme (but common 🇺🇸) end of the spectrum of consequences of “toxic masculinity” are mass shootings. Perhaps we should call it something else if it hurts non-toxic-men’s feelings, but when 95%+ of mass shooters are (often misogynistic) men, I think the gender factor is worth acknowledging. https://fair.org/home/mass-shooters-most-common-trait-their-gender-gets-little-press-attention/

Everyone else is making turkey and mashed potatoes and such today, but I made super fluffy vegan bao! 💖 (There is a lot of filling inside this one, they just somehow ended up at the edges… also my baos are ugly so I gave up and made one empanada style.)

I grabbed a box of sanitary pads at Costco because I thought it'd be easy to find a place to drop it off, but it turns out that the online version of the Street Roots Rose City Resource guide isn't very usable/item-specific, and it's surprisingly difficult to find a women-focused, non-religiously-affiliated place.

I spent a chunk of money at a completely underwhelming local business today that was honestly the picture of gentrification, and because it’s the holiday season, they had set up a donations box for items like sanitary pads for homeless women. So now I’m feeling bad that I spent money that I could’ve simply donated to far better causes than filling my belly with overpriced mediocre bland food, at a kind of place that asks for default 20% “tip” upfront so their employees won’t complain about pay 🫠

Los Puñales and Epif are extremely overrated, Verde Cocina is rather terrible, Chilango is solid but expensive, Mis Tacones always took 30+ minutes to get us our food so we don’t go there anymore, and my partner insists that VeganO MexicanO gave him stomach issues for days because they used lard/old oil.

It was also very cool to see Bike Friday bikes in person! Unfortunately, the man at the booth was busy talking to the other man, and they didn’t have a demo bike for folding/riding so all I did was lift one, but it was amazingly light! Very happy to report that #MADEBikeShow had strong Japanese representation, complete with a kei truck at the Yakima booth! 🚲🛻
I asked the lady at the Crane Bell booth 今日はご出張ですか？ (politely indirect way of asking if she flew all the way in from Japan) and she said yes, so I bought their most expensive bell to support my people 🇯🇵
