This Red-shouldered hawk photo is my phone wallpaper. It’s two years old already, and a good reminder of the rarity of these types of close encounters, even though I do this all the time. Every time I meet a bird is special, but there are those moments that are truly memorable.

Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve is one of the best places to see birds in Southern California and maybe anywhere. The Great blue herons are one of my favorite things to see. They’re rarely very active most of the year, but when it’s time to nest, it’s not uncommon to see these giants soaring through the air carrying ridiculous sticks and branches.

February 2026 is special because it was February 2016 when I first got a camera and decided to try and learn about birds by taking photos of them. A lot has happened in the decade since I started and it’s safe to say it was one of the best decisions I ever made. Here’s one of the first photos I took with that LUMIX camera, a male Anna’s hummingbird.

I think pelicans are so cool. The low morning sunlight brought out many details - very “prehistoric”. This one had the most interesting plumage, kind of an intermediate between breeding and non-breeding.

In contrast to their normal vertically-aligned feeding posture, this one took a more direct route, I think because of the other leaves in the way. The wing position in this frame is a little different too—they don’t move just up and down, but in a figure-8 pattern which gives them so much agility in flight.

Found a wallet with a big amount of cash in it while I was out running. The owner’s ID was in it—just a few blocks away so it was easy to return. Can’t imagine losing that much money, especially with how things are right now.

Slightly cleaned up version of another frame I shared. The depth of field is so shallow for these tiny birds so it helps if they turn their heads (also looks less weird than head-on). For hummingbirds it also shows off the way the light refracts on their gorget—structural color. In this one it was also interesting to have a similar color gradient as the gorget in the blurred aloe plants.

There were times when a bee would fly past the aloe flowers and you’d see drops of nectar flying out. Mockingbirds aren’t usually known as pollinators but as you can tell by this one’s face, they can be.

Hummingbird photography is mostly a matter of patience. It’s nice when other birds drop in to explore. Like this Bewick’s wren. You can see a piece of spiderweb on its face.

It was crowded at the patch of aloe. This is a different Anna’s hummingbird that snuck in to take a sip. As you can see, the honeybee didn’t want to give up its spot either.

It’s not easy being a male Anna’s hummingbird: hovering with your wings moving 50 beats per second, flashing your gorget to defend the aloe, feeding every 10 minutes in order to have enough nutrition to survive, and positioning yourself in the most complicated lighting situation for the guy who’s trying to photograph you.

2025 marked my twentieth year of living alone. I’ve always taken pride in my independence, and I’m too weird for anyone to live with me. Being alone is tough sometimes and as I get older, I see the importance of having other people who I can depend on and share with. Fortunately, my friends are some of the best people on the planet. Hey, even my symbol of fierce independence, the hummingbird, needs to rely on flowers. Next year, I hope to be more available, more patient, and more generous.

Formed by millions of years of shifting plates and erosion, and the location of many early television and film productions where they needed something “space-like”. I’m pretty sure some Star Trek and Twilight Zone episodes were shot here.
