The key to building "decentralized" products normal people can use without needing centralized layers is based on something the "web3" communities—and fans of Moxie/VB—aren’t even aware of: the economics of attention (aka, the attention economy).
[One reasonably noncontroversial definition of "economist," at least in Western academia, excluding flavors of Marxists, is "social scientists who take private property and free markets seriously,” e.g., @jack.]
For the past decade, I learned that the "attention economy" is about restoring the rightful ownership of attention to the end users. "Sovereignty of attention" will lead to a freer market for creators & curators (as well as offer natural attention-defenses from attention-theft). And it'll not only -not- harm content creators, it'll spell the doom of middleman-like user-created content platforms (Meta, Tiktok). We know this will happen someday, here’s one way how...
First, the storage platform must be separate from the curation. Switching curators is easy. Switching storage providers is hard (lock-in).
Once that’s done, curators would compete to be your "reference curator" and follow these tenets:
1. absolute respect for end user (your) privacy;
2. maximal control in the hands of end users (you or your guardian);
3. nation-state resistant security for both the content you store and the trust (in curators) you vest.
Who you trust as your personal curator would be safeguarded in the extreme, to protect both you and the curator, analogous to the protected status of conversations between a president and his/her advisers. [N.B. The quality of AI filters today is not a concern from the perspective of attention ownership and control because what I'm ultimately after is "a freer market for creators and curators, based on sovereignty of attention.")
One of the consequences of this is that a creator cannot demand or expect to be paid for each time—for example—his/her song is played. One of the questions/problems with digital goods is that since copying is nearly free, someone has to take a loss, relative to the single-owner multiple-use property of physical goods. Who? Today, the end user is paying the price in the form of (i) loss of privacy and (ii) paying more for content (which also leads to the overproduction of content). In the attention economy I’m proposing, I value the ownership of attention above that of the ownership of content created.
I focus on attention because—as a generally valid method to diagnose what's wrong with a society—it's logical to focus on whichever property is simultaneously both highly valuable and has insecure ownership. If you focus on those properties, then "human attention" would jump out as a core issue to address today. [As an aside, another one to focus on, later, is compassion, which I believe is also a precious resource that is being abused in modern society.]
The leading wave in this space–what others are calling “web3” and heading in the wrong direction from the start–is the economic analysis of nonphysical properties, which are also not completely impersonal or tradable: attention, compassion, social trust, consensus, political legitimacy, social cohesion, etc. Some of these are tradable to certain extents. When property was physical [as opposed to digital], the problem was how strongly to defend private property. The problem for our time, dating back to at least the 90’s, is the category of nonphysical properties that can be owned [I suspect many modern economists would agree, and I’m not one and don’t know of any]. In any event, exploring these highly imperfect and inefficient markets could be fun and very timely, partly enabled by crypto assets.

P.S. Valuing ownership of attention over ownership of content will enable more piracy, moving the boundary of what’s legal. The tradeoff between creator's control over content and consumer's control over attention and privacy is tight, best case. One’s gain must come at the loss of the other, and we need to accept that. What should be avoided is unnecessary loss of either content control or attention/privacy control. Note that both have the property of irreversible loss. The tightness of the tradeoffs and the irreversible losses are responsible for flawed solutions and crazy intense emotions wanting to go too far, to gain absolute control, in one direction or the other.
The problem of compensation for creators of reproducible content is to enable multiple models of control, with direct models applied for each object or sets of objects. You know most of the models. One that might be less common is what I'd call "coordinated commissioning” (or “coordinated hedging “), where a sufficient number of buyers pre-commit to paying an amount sufficient for the creator to produce the artifact. This model is used rarely but is present today and I’m sure you know a platform that enables it (hint: crowdfunding).
It's also a form of voting. Voting should be part of the economy. But it's not just voting with one's wallet or feet, as the common metaphor goes. Voting by purchasing does not require synchronization; coordinated hedging or commissioning does.
What will likely happen, for art, literature, and movies, which have high production costs, is that the middle to upper-middle class and some of the rich will commission them and then the art will be released to the public domain. Unknown artists will have to achieve some level of accomplishment and name recognition, under some other funding models, e.g., patronage or family and friends, before coordinated commissioning can become available to them.
Residual income will largely be a thing of the past, except for a new form of fandom, where the fans willingly give up control of their privacy and attention and hand over the monitoring of their/each replay of their beloved content and offer payment to their idols. Such fans can use client devices (or even brain implants for that matter) that contain DRM.
I don't want anyone to dictate where society should land on the spectrum of degrees of control over content or attention. I want to enable all models. They are definitely not mutually independent, some models will be weakened as a result of others being present—the tight tradeoff.
