So I was watching this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N008PVQPCd0
And a line stuck with me: "Linux is a POS sometimes, but it's getting better, and Windows is a POS sometimes, and it's getting worse." That really does feel like how things are going, IMO - on lots of different levels, not just Linux. Across the board, we have old systems slowly failing, and new systems slowly coming in to replace them.

I don't want to just let someone swap out all the assets for AI art or whatever and be on their way, though. :/

So if I want to release the source code for a video game with AGPL, but also want to stipulate that nobody can offer the game on Steam or any other platform without my consent, is there a license for that? :/

I mean, it's already pretty easy for a parent to just register their kid as homeschooled, isn't it? I don't think that's the problem. If the parents aren't going to give a kid a good education, which they often won;t, and the schools won't do it, which they often won't, then where's a kid supposed to get that? :/

2025-11-04 17:45:44 GMT

...So, does anyone else think maybe we're doing education wrong? Like, more time spent on the fundamentals of thought and basic problem solving, to start with? Anyone else made this argument? Is there a book on the topic I can read, or something? XD

It doesn't matter whether people like it, it matters whether they can use it to automate our jobs and then send the deathbots after us. Which eventually I think they can, and will, if we don't do anything about it. :/

Eh, at the moment it still needs a fair bit of development - but they're working on that, and there's no sign they'll stop. So, at the moment it looks like either they'll figure it out, or society will collapse first... :/

I worry the technology is too powerful to prevent entirely... Though maybe we can prevent the datacenter version, which is the worst form overall, IMO? We might have to dismantle capitalism entirely to prevent that, though, which is, uh, kinda a big ask... :/

I don't entirely agree with this, but regardless, even within that scenario what I'm arguing for isn't 'good guy with toxic waste', it's 'good guy whose job it is to study toxic waste'. Which, given we have a lot of rich and powerful people dead set on producing the stuff and shoving it anywhere they can make it fit, seems really important. :/

Mmm. I definitely agree the tech is being taken in the wrong direction. Though that describes most tech right now honestly. :/
Techno-minimalism... Eh, yes and no? I avoid most corporate tech as much as I can already... But like, 'just opting out' can only take you so far, it's a stopgap measure, not a defense. If all we do is retreat, then eventually they'll drive us off a cliff or corner us or chase us to exhaustion and then murder us, IMO...

Eh, I use a local AI myself. It has a lot of problems and is far from perfect, but the underlying technology is sound, and we will be seeing it become steadily more powerful and more useful over the coming years. I don't know the exact details, but this isn't something that can be ignored, he's right about that. I'm not sure what to do about it, it might be that the correct response is furious opposition and bombing data centers. But something needs to be done... :/

2025-11-03 17:31:17 GMT

Just watched a video from David Shapiro, and I kinda agree with him, but also I don't think he's taking AI seriously enough. "AI has some good and some bad, but it won't do anything too awful and we don't need to take drastic action or anything", whereas my take would be "AI is very powerful and has a lot of potential to do good, but it's also very dangerous and we might, actually, want to take drastic action..."

The main problems, IMO, is that the benefits are spread out over the whole economy, and the costs are concentrated on specific people, usually those who are in competition for things with limited supply, such as jobs or housing.

2025-10-21 19:59:07 GMT

I don't think immigration is a net negative - they do also drive consumption, because they still need to eat and stuff, which stimulates the economy, and the extra labor also stimulates the economy. Remissions, I'm not certain about - in the short term, it theoretically makes everyone else's money more valuable, and thus fights inflation, and in the long term it drives exports, which generally a good thing?

Mmm. I mean, it's a little iffy to jump to 'it's a conspiracy', but... It could be? Question then is who. My first guess honestly would be a foreign power that wants to give America something else to focus on and get divided over...? I'm skeptical that MAGA is competent enough to do this. Though maybe I'm underestimating them, I dunno. :/

2025-09-11 01:46:46 GMT

...So, do we have any idea who did it? From what I've heard, it seems to have been a sniper, and a fairly competent one... That's kinda weird, ain't it? :/

4. Try and organize collective help. By far the hardest, but also the most impactful if it could be arranged. I have no idea how to go about doing this, but if we want to make real progress, it'll probably need to be done at some point...

3. Try and help out individually? This one is risky, I'll admit. But even just making the effort to talk to someone and share a few friendly words might help? I dunno. it depends on who you're talking to, I suppose. :/

2. Try and understand. Both individually and as a collective, try and really understand other people. Again, I know, it's not easy. It can be damn painful, sometimes. But I still think it's worth the effort. Especially, if you can, document and share your understanding with others, so collectively, we can make progress and move forwards.

But okay, what can we actually do about all this? I don't know any specifics. I can make a few vague suggestions, though:
1. If you can, be kind. Even if you don't understand why someone is behaving the way they are, if kindness seems like a reasonable option, you should take it. I won't claim to be good at this, and I know life is complicated and things are never easy, but still, I think it's good to occasionally try and pull ones head above the fog.

You can work to close that gap, and you can do more or less with what you've got, but overall, the system is still pretty unfair. ...Soooo, anyone tried asking the Canadian government to fund some FLOSS? You could get a *lot* of free software for a small piece of a government budget, and it would really let them stick it to Silicon Valley. Anyone have a line to Justin Trudeau? Give him a whisper maybe. :/

...Is the source for the web page public anywhere? I mean obviously it's not anything huge, but it still seems worth throwing up on a git repo...

- reply

Oh huh, I was just talking about this sort of thing the other day...

2024-12-15 17:52:02 GMT

- reply

I think government funding would be worthwhile - the benefits of FLOSS are ginormous, even in the current state, which delivers like 1% of the potential it could if it were properly supported - and the costs really aren't that high. But in order to get governments on board with this, it needs to be communicated to them, and then we need to actually deliver what is promised.

2024-12-15 17:50:19 GMT

- reply

So, how would the money be sourced? How would it be distributed? I have no idea. I don't think direct consumer purchasing works - the majority of the benefits of of FLOSS require either a total lack of gatekeeping, or are third party externalities anyway. Charity might work? It's iffy. I think overall, the key needs to be government funding, which means governments need to be sold on the idea, and then we need to figure out proper distribution.

2024-12-15 17:49:35 GMT

- reply

There's also the problem of money - some people will work on these problems for free, sometimes even a lot of people, but eventually we're going to need some actual material incentives.

2024-12-15 17:42:04 GMT

- reply

There's also the possibility of creating FLOSS orgs dedicated entirely to organizing - but there are a lot of finicky details that need to be handled correctly to make that work properly. :/

2024-12-15 17:40:29 GMT

- reply

This will add a fair bit of complexity, of course. I'm not entirely sure how to handle that. My first thought is to start off by having people document the work they do? Like, keeping some kind of log of what work was done, where, for what purpose? That's not a small ask though, and it opens up all sorts of opportunities for new problems, so, some experimentation may be required.

2024-12-15 17:37:14 GMT

- reply

Next, in order to increase the effectiveness of work, I think we need to specialize? Like, there should be FLOSS devs not associated with any one project, who specialize in a particular area of software development, and who get called in by various projects to help with specific tasks. Profiling and optimization seems like the most obvious place to start with this, but I'm sure there are lots of other things where specialized skills are valuable.

2024-12-15 17:35:14 GMT

- reply

In order to increase the amount of work that gets done, I think there needs to be a good system for bringing in new devs and helping to onboard them - I know I've struggled to figure out how to even get started. I think we need dedicated positions for onboarding new people and teaching new devs. This is far from trivial, and I expect it will take a lot of work to figure out how to make it work, but I think it needs to be done.

2024-12-15 17:31:45 GMT

- reply

First off, I think it's going to take a lot more work. Which, given that FLOSS software is already struggling to cover the existing maintenance work, is something of a real problem. In order to solve this, I think two things are going to be necessary - both dramatically increasing the amount of work that gets done, *and* increasing it's effectiveness.

2024-12-15 17:29:16 GMT

So I was complaining like a week or so ago about FLOSS software not being good - about treating the needs of normal people as though they were secondary and unimportant, and developing exclusively for a narrow group of purists. And I definitely think this happens! Which of course raises the follow up question: What does it take to avoid this sort of thing?

2024-12-04 18:54:22 GMT

So I was reading a thread about Bluesky's custom feeds tools... And it sounds like the kind of thing I've been advocating for fedi for years now, except they actually went and implemented it.
And like... What the fuck, people. Why couldn't we have implemented this thing first? This is something that frustrates me about open source software in general - people so often treat it as though 'Being Good, Actually' is some secondary goal that doesn't really matter. :/

2024-09-17 18:46:20 GMT

...How crazy would it be to try and make, like, a universal GUI for command line programs? Like, it automatically reads the help and man pages and assembles a GUI? Is that completely nuts? :/

Didn't even mention the gravity issue: Humans are very much adapted to earths 1G gravity. Mars has, like, 0.38 G gravity. And it's not just a matter of muscles, or even bones - your veins are calibrated to the pressure exerted by your blood being appropriate for a world with 1G gravity, and without it they degrade in all sorts of horrible ways. :/

Literal wage theft deserves a mention too. Ye olde 'I'm just not gonna give you your last paycheck of a couple hundred dollars, because what are you going to do about it?'
