The dude that invented the concept of a NULL pointer beats himself up, thinking he made the worst design mistake in the history of computer science. Meanwhile, the guy that came up with the idea of multithreading is probably sitting on a beach somewhere, sipping a drink with a paper umbrella in it, without a care in the world.
The universe is deeply unfair sometimes.

Monthly SDL3 patch release 3.4.18 is out: https://github.com/libsdl-org/SDL/releases/tag/release-3.4.18
We're going to start pounding on 3.6.0 now (new features, bug fixes that need larger changes than we can justify in a stable release series, etc).

2026-09-22 16:20:16 GMT

I don't understand the "I can see that you reject AI submissions, but Claude spit out this itty bitty tiny little patch so I'm just going to post it to your bug tracker just in case you want to use it no big deal if you don't okay thanks bye" submissions.
Please don't do that. It puts me in a position where I have to try and recreate those four lines from scratch without doing it the same way. You made it harder for me.

Amir and I just finished our RubyConf workshop...I think it went well! I was told afterwards that Matz was sitting at one of the tables, so I hope I didn't say anything embarrassing in front of the creator of Ruby. :O

Gnome insisting that no app can have an icon unless it has provided a .desktop file is unquestionably the dumbest hill to die on.

@nprofile…3q9y @nprofile…fnex the native midi library literally wants to play to the OS’s MIDI interfaces, which sucks for several technical reasons.
SDL_mixer will decode midi with either a built-in copy of Timidity or FluidSynth, and plays through SDL’s audio (which supports sndio and Haiku’s BSoundPlayer). Maybe useful?

One more thing about the Steam Frame: I think the Quest has been a great system that made smart technical choices at an amazing price point.
But it also asked me to pair my phone so it can show me my notifications in-world, and my first reaction was: that would be cool, and I would NEVER let Meta have access to that information.
Which is to say: if the Steam Frame turns out to be an otherwise-lateral move, I would still be eager to dump the Quest. Including repurchasing titles on Steam.

Something I wanted in SDL3 for a long time just landed; you can make the SDL window just take up the whole browser window in Emscripten now.
So instead of this:
https://icculus.org/~icculus/emscripten/testsprite-filldoc/testsprite.html
You can do this:
https://icculus.org/~icculus/emscripten/testsprite-filldoc/testsprite.html?SDL_EMSCRIPTEN_FILL_DOCUMENT=1
Feels more friendly to browser games.

As of about 15 minutes ago, SDL3 reached 100% documentation coverage. Every single public symbol in SDL's headers is now documented!
The massive list is here:
https://wiki.libsdl.org/SDL3/CategoryAPI
The much more pleasant way to browse this is here, though:
https://wiki.libsdl.org/SDL3/APIByCategory
(You can also download the entire wiki as static HTML pages for offline viewing, or even peruse them as Unix manpages. We're taking documentation very seriously in SDL3!)

Played through Metal Gear Solid 1 again last week. God, what a masterpiece of a game. Even its weirdest and worst moments are iconic.
Popped The Twin Snakes into the GameCube after to see what MGS1 would look like with "better" graphics, and it looks like the whole game was just rebuilt from scratch?! All the cutscenes are different, the voice acting was redone...that's wild.

Just messing around, but I pointed a cruddy webcam at my 3D printer, in case this is the sort of thing you might find soothing to stare at.
