The thing that offends me the most about how A.I. "a site previously ranked first in a search result could lose about 79% of its traffic for that query if results were delivered below an AI overview. The study also found that links to YouTube – owned by Google’s parent company Alphabet – were more prominent compared with the normal search result system. The research has been submitted as part of a legal complaint to the UK’s competition watchdog about the impact of Google AI Overviews" https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2025/jul/24/ai-summaries-causing-devastating-drop-in-online-news-audiences-study-finds

i doubt Pootle would describe himself as communist, but it is bizarre. Some of the particularly lunatic christian fundamentalists in Trumpistan have hard-ons (it's always men) for the Taliban, too

An American father who moved to Russia to avoid LGBTQ+ “indoctrination” for his kids is being sent to the front line in Ukraine, despite being assured he would serve in a non-combat role. His wife added that, after a month of service, her family had yet to receive any pay. https://www.thedailybeast.com/texan-moved-fam-to-russia-to-flee-wokenow-hes-headed-to-ukraine-front-line/

"LLMs are essentially confident-sounding lying machines with a penchant to occasionally disclose private data or plagiarise existing work. While they do this, they also use vast amounts of energy and are happy using all the GPUs you can throw at them which is a problem we’ve seen before in the field of cryptocurrencies.
As such, it does not feel right to bundle any such solution into Vivaldi. There is enough misinformation going around to risk adding more to the pile." https://vivaldi.com/blog/technology/vivaldi-wont-allow-a-machine-to-lie-to-you/

It's the apps that live at the bottom of home screens which are always there. (badly outlined in this screenshot)

Google says DMA says the choice screen changes default. Nothing to do with Hot Seat.

2025-07-01 08:49:43 GMT

James "Hepcat" Heppell from @npub1kn4…3asa asks why Google doesn't put the user's chosen default browser into the "hot seat". Research shows that this increases retention and reduces Gatekeeper dominance. Apple does, and Google Chrome benefits from this on iOS. Can Google commit to doing the same on Android?

Like Apple, Google is tugging on our heartstrings at the money it must spend on obeying rules, and the amount it might lose by no longer being able to behave uncompetitively. It's like watching Bambi's mum's death scene on a loop while chopping onions and listening to "Seasons in the Sun".

Like Apple, Google is sad because DMA compliance costs them money. There are fabulously brilliant digital products (presumably, code for "Artificial Intelligence") which can't be sold to EU customers because of pinko commie godless regulation.

At the weekend, a group of trans women protested topless at the Scottish Parliament about the recent Supreme Court ruling that the Equality Act defines women as "biological women". The police couldn't arrest them, because to arrest them for showing their breasts would be to define them as women (it's not illegal for men to be topless). And, of course, the right-wing press that reported on it censored their breasts, thereby making their point for them.
