If not for the very mousey interaction model, I think the default #wm in #NetBSD is pretty darn slick! ;)

Yo, #OpenBSD peeps,
Has anyone tried #Sway on 7.9/-current? Is it good?
It's a little buggy in #FreeBSD. I don't really care about sway vs. #i3wm all that much (nor am I ideologically invested in the Wayland vs. X11 grudge match 😄), but I reallly like foot as a terminal, and fuzzel as a launcher/menu, and they're Wayland-only. 😂

2026-04-16 18:47:03 GMT

I need to give #FreeBSD 15 another try on this laptop, soon. ;)
FreeBSD hasn't been perfect, there are occasional momentary hangs when loading large websites (for some reason), and every now and then Wayland/sway will just completely lose the plot and force me to shut down...
But dang if #ZFS isn't freaking bulletproof.

Oh, that was a brilliant form factor. The last true small phone.
I'm kind of done with phones in general, from a privacy standpoint (terrible), from a usability standpoint (can haz real keyboard plox?), and now from a visibility standpoint (old eyes not loving focusing on something less than an arms-length away).
I'm going to try to keep this Pixel 7 for as long as possible.
And yeah, I remember 2007 when people were flipping their lids for the iPhone, calling it the "JesusPhone."
There hasn't been any hardware all that interesting since then.
And Apple absolutely does not have the vision to produce a revolutionary product like that anymore.

Honestly, Linux is pretty far into the "it just works" category nowadays, but if you'd prefer a more unixy experience, and don't mind a daily supplement of RTFM (😄), the BSDs are pretty great.
I'm still a n00b (always a n00b, but that's ok!), but here's kind of how I see them:
FreeBSD: Very full-featured, ZFS by default, which is amazing, has the most (monetary) support, tends to support newer hardware the best. Requires some RTFM to get a GUI (but this is changing soon). Easy-to-use TUI installer
OpenBSD: Very secure, somewhat minimalist mindset, tends to work well on hardware it supports, lacking a modern filesystem (UFS/FFS only). Gives you a basic X11 GUI out of the box. Relatively easy-to-use prompt/script-based installer. Forked from NetBSD in the 90s
NetBSD: Supports architectures you've completely forgotten about. "Of course it runs NetBSD." A very portable/standard base for development (very standard unixy/bsd-y things, not as eccentric). Ask around before buying hardware to make sure it's well-supported. Needs more funding (I hope to contribute a little next year, if things go well). Includes things (like ZFS, bluetooth, FFS "softdeps") that OpenBSD has jettisoned or avoided for maintainability reasons. Lead dev is active on Fedi, and helpful. Lacks full-disk encryption.
DragonflyBSD: Haven't tried this one yet. It was forked from FreeBSD in the 2000s, and has its own modern filesystem called HAMMER2.
GhostBSD: a desktop-oriented FreeBSD "distro" with a graphical installer. Wasn't able to get it working the last time I tried it
NomadBSD: a desktop-oriented FreeBSD "distro" that runs from a persistent USB, or can be installed. Worked decently well for me when I tried it
I mostly run FreeBSD, Linux, and OpenBSD.
Holler any time I can be of assistance.
Cheers, and happy holidays!

You have to decide if freedom is more important to you than convenience or paper-thin aesthetics.
That's really just about it.
Sorry if I'm not putting it super tactfully. I was a fanboy in my day, but it was a lot easier to be an Apple fanboy in 1989 or 2009 than today, now that they're just an overrated, overpriced, overhyped fashion brand with fascist leanings.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
If you don't have any experience running a free(dom) OS on your computer(s), then I can recommend something like Fedora or MX Linux as a great starting point, although I'm partial to #Debian. Getting FreeBSD going takes a little bit of work, although I wouldn't call it particularly hard. It's just some #RTFM :)
Again, I don't mean to be belligerent or demeaning. I'm just a bit further along on my journey and I have a hard time hiding my disdain for Apple anymore. I was a huge Apple fan for most of my life, so it's definitely a love-to-hate kinda thing. The mystical wave function of Apple's hype machine collapsed after dazzling my eyes for 30 years, and all I was left with was a solitary particle of bullcrap. XD

The dev on the matrix chat said that snac only supported the v1 api and that Tokodon defaults to v2, but should fall back to v1, but that might be broken? It could be that mastodon.sdf.org is running too old a version of mastodon for #Tokodon to talk to??

I had the pleasure of taking an undergraduate literature class that focused on Quixote and its later derivatives. It was a ton of fun.
Except for the second part/book of Quixote. Cervantes was so cruel to the poor hidalgo!!!

Quite possible the software quality problem is itself in turn a manifestation of #crapitalism and "just ship it" culture.

Finally unfollowed that rl_dane at polymaths guy.
SO noisy, totally dominated my feed. 🤣
And it's like... everything he said, I've already thought of.
So unoriginal. 🙃

My Solarpunk Manifesto
Solarpunk is a radical hope-infused aesthetic and political ideology centered on building an equitable, sustainable, just, and accessible world where no one is left behind, where we build with nature, where we destroy all forms of exploitation and oppression, where we celebrate the wonderful diversity of humanity and nature, where we live within our planet's optimal boundaries for habitability and survival.
Solarpunk rejects unhealthy growth. Instead, it embraces harmony with one's environment, degrowth and decolonial concepts that are rooted in unlearning our unhealthy and harmful socializations from past violent regimes. Where we instead build with nature in a collaborative way.
Solarpunk embraces the Pluriverse, where there is no one way for all of society and people to live/exist, but there is a multiplicity in lifestyles, ways of being, and ways of constructing society. Finding the healthiest, care-centric, equitable, just, and accessible way of being in society requires collaboration and exploration by those within that community, and often is unique to that community.
Solarpunk rejects binary models. Humanity and the natural world exists in multiplicity. There are multiple genders, multiple sexual orientations, multiple ways bodies can appear, and multiple abilities, which all have validity.
Solarpunk embraces accessibility and inclusivity as the foundation in which to build society and relations with one another, where events and places are easily accessible to people of all abilities and gender and age.
Solarpunk rejects capitalist-individualism. Instead, it embraces collective care and solidarity between fellow human beings and non-human beings and ecosystems, where our unique individuality is celebrated for its diversity and our contributions to our community accepted at the level in which people are able to give.
Solarpunk recognizes the dynamic and ever-evolving process that is nature as well as its right to exist alongside human being's right to exist. We are in community, and that relationship with nature and one another requires collective care and solidarity.
Solarpunk rejects unhealthy competition and embraces instead collaboration and conflict resolution. To build a community requires collaboration and just conflict resolution strategies.
Solarpunk rejects greed and hoarding of resources that is endemic to capitalism. Instead, solarpunk embraces sharing and collectively/publicly held goods, land, information, and resources. This isn't to say solarpunk is against us personally owning things, but to say that:
* the land itself cannot be owned as property as it holds personhood within our collective Earth community,
* the public commons are crucial to survival,
* information should be open and free to access and use,
* Internet infrastructure should be open and accessible for all to use and held collectively by the people
* library systems are critical for the community and provide books, tech equipment, skill swaps, and other necessary items and skills for all to use,
* healthcare free and accessible to all, education free and accessible to all, where a diverse methodology of problem-solving and encouragement of discovery and reading is emphasized,
* the goods/resources needed for survival must be shared equitably so no one is left behind and everyone is provided for,
* all our infrastructure is collectively held and maintained,
* all of our society -- every aspect of our community -- is accessible to all who dwell in it.
Solarpunk rejects exploitation of others and one's environment. Instead, it embraces collective care and mutual aid, where we honor and respect one another's differences, identities, abilities, and actively listen and care for each other. Where we seek to do no harm and if harm is done, actively hold one another accountable and do repair. Transformative justice is often the framework used in repair. Where we work in collaboration with one another and the ecosystems in which we dwell. That we sustainably source our materials and engage in repair to ecosystems, to give them time to recover for any extraction we do to meet our collective needs. To never take more than we need and to use all that we need to avoid waste. To create things made to last, where we can repair and mend what we have and share those skills within inclusive and accessible systems, like libraries of skills, goods, books, etc.
Solarpunk rejects racism, rejects white supremacy, rejects ableism, rejects classism, rejects sexism, rejects xenophobia, rejects homophobia and transphobia, rejects antisemitism, rejects all forms of bigotry that treats a group of people as less-than.
Solarpunk embraces liberation, equality and equity, where no one is left behind, where non-hierarchical, horizontal democratic practices are utilized.
Solarpunk rejects borders. Borders are often used to punish migrants and asylum seekers and has been a source of violence against other groups of people that is rooted in supremacy, domination, and xenophobia. Thus, solarpunk rejects it. Instead, solarpunk embraces either open borders or no borders at all. Migrants are welcomed and needs provided for just like any person dwelling in that community.
Solarpunk invites everyone to work together collaboratively toward a just, sustainable, equitable, accessible present and future. Where we can start building that right now with one another even as we work to end the harmful systems oppressing us. Power to the people! We can do this together.

Markdown tables are simple but clumsy.

Sorry I don't have a good recommendation for that one.
I either use LibreOffice Calc, or csv/some-character delimited (not only comma) text

Don't get me wrong, I feel bizarrely privileged that so many people follow me (for some reason?!?) on my main account, and I totally believe in following folks back, as long as their feed is at least marginally interesting, and I do like having so many toots to look through on my main account.
But, I kinda love how smol my feed is on this account, and how BSD-focused it is. ;)

Seems I just need to set /dev/ttyC0 to be writeable by wheel. Are you certain that it's actually changing the brightness (in both directions) and not just fiddling with gamma like xrandr?
I guess I can test by looking at power consumption. :D
