Last Notes npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover My office-desk / #hamradio shack clock usually displays zulu-time (GMT 0) along with local time in a very boring display but for some reason reset itself to display a lucky cat, so I guess that's what my clock is now. npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover tired: #hamradio shack npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover Yes but *where* npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover @nprofile…5uqu making this my new holiday standard npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover State of my todo list - Reminding myself that, no, I do not need to buy a sandwich from the deli. I have a sandwich at home already that needs eating. npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover Made a direct radio contact with Germany on 15m and 10 watts. npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover Honestly great news. You know when Zuckerberg goes "ALL IN" on something it's the tech equivalent of a death rattle. npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover Hey #Seattle #bioscience people, my daughter (studying neurosci/biochem) is looking for a Seattle area on-site biosci/biochem lab work internship opportunity for this summer. She has a year of biomanufacturing lab work experience. Pls message if you know of something I could point her to! npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover If you are thinking now is a good time to know about things like #hamradio & alt communications tools, here's a reminder that I co-founded an inclusive, welcoming ham radio community based in the Pacific Northwest. Available via Discord: https://discord.gg/mJmsV5jGxz npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover @nprofile…rrqe if for no other reason than marketing, I’d say almost certainly. I’m just amazed by the concept of cycling through clothes this fast, though. npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover Read somewhere that Americans wear clothing items on average 7 times before tossing them (no idea how accurate) but if I don't wear any given clothing regularly for a minimum of a decade I feel like I'm the world's most wasteful person. Honestly did not realize I was that far off norm? Anyone else? npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover the roomba just vacuumed over my foot and I feel like it was probing for weaknesses npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover Duffy states NASA will now focus only on core mission (putting a nuke powered F150 on the moon and doing some sick offroading) npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover Can you imagine being the guy who spends decades building a company to CONNECT PEOPLE & without doubt this company does reach deep into American's lives & yet after DECADES, by YOUR COUNT the average American has only 3 friends & you don't just think "wow I'm a colossal failure" and close up shop. npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover Once this land was barren & we built a city on it out of pure HTML. Those that came after thought the city had always been here & that another could never be created but this was wrong. We built it. We can tear down & rebuild. npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover Any future dinner parties I throw will be mandatory "athleisure formal," "blacktie goth," or "techwear evening dress" npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover Aqua vs Liquid Glass npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover How to take your 💊vitamins with Apple Homekit npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover I've been a @nprofile…gsm3 customer since v1 & I've never been this frustrated with it. The extension experience on macOS is *so unpredictable*. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The extension is unlocked in this video & it still falls on its face. npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover The UI/UX around #passkeys is SO BAD. I fully understand passkeys on a technical level yet even so I feel like I'm fighting accidental dark UI/UX patterns the entire time I am deploying them. npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover Presenting my horror short indie film for tonight: I am in the basement folding laundry and the cat keeps getting riled up and then freezing and staring fixedly over my shoulder towards the empty room behind me, watching something. npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover finally took a few minutes to solve a real world UI problem npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover whats up just chilling in my new room npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover @nprofile…dhpg @nprofile…gw4z I use apple news, so will open it there, thx. npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover @nprofile…gw4z @nprofile…dhpg I'm done conflating the placebo effect with the "health supplements" industry that preys on, promotes, and profits from ignorance. People start believing in that stuff and then it's a funnel down into anti-science bullshit. That path ends with anti-vaxxers and our current measles epidemic. npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover Telling my kids this was the three stooges npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover You know I get that we should all be able to separate the art and the artist to a degree, but I found out that the designer of something I own is a homeopathy fan and I can't stop thinking "this was designed by an idiot" now. npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover I wish Apple would go back to the days of "let's make our apps really interoperate incredibly well". The basics are so krufty feeling right now. Groups on contacts are terribly broken and can't be shared. Notes and reminders are barely on speaking terms. Fix this stuff first. npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover Folks, unlike internet comms radios can't just be disconnected by a service provider. It's just you, another radio, and physics. npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover Opera 'fit while going to see the Magic Flute at Seattle Opera npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover Made #hamradio contact with Ireland (have only made 2 contacts in Ireland all time). 15 meter wavelength, ~21 million cycles per second, 10 watts (lightbulb level power). npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover i give it a week before you can only buy eggs on X using trump memecoins npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover Saw this on reddit. NEVER use torque specs from Google's AI results. We're talking "wheels can come off and people could die" error here. Normal torque for lug nuts is almost never this low (normal is 80+ ft lbs depending on vehicle). npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover I say this as someone running a sizable Discord: We have to move past Discord for community. npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover @nprofile…5nyj I'd seen pics of that before but just went down a DCS rabbit hole. Some amazing history and development there. An indictment of management unable to see that they had the future right there, I would assume. Feels a lot like Xerox PARC in that regard. npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover @nprofile…5nyj my first digital camera was a kodak dc290 back 99 i think. a beast but i loved it. a real shame. npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover @nprofile…5nyj was that drum scanning output or other big image data sources? npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover @nprofile…5nyj just UPSed it to New Zealand! Depending on how long it takes to get there it might be the fastest throughput I could get on total data transfer (i haven't actually calculated that yet but I should once it arrives) npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover never underestimate the bandwidth of a metal case stuffed with 20TB hard drives npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover Seattle was hit by a bomb cyclone last night and roads are already being cleared and power is already coming back up, all through PUBLIC municipal services. Libertarians can fuck right off. npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover Hey #seattle if you lost your keys on the backtrails at the arboretum I left them at the visitor center npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover This keyboard (robust, reliable, foldable) makes 75% of what I use my iPad for pointless. I'm as inclined to grab it with my ridiculously powerful phone as I am the heavier, as-limited-by-the-OS iPad. Apple really has a product problem with the iPad and I hope they do come out with a hybrid macbook. npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover @npub1uwh…fqu7 full wavelength 20m EFHW antenna on my roof npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover Just made a successful #hamradio contact between Seattle and Fiji on 15 meters wavelength using 10 watts! Always a thrill. npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover Rocking a look I call "slightly sleazy heist crew van guy" so if you need someone on your bank robbery gang that can quip witty one liners on the radio all night long from the safety of a panel truck while you put your neck on the line, I'm your dude. npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover neuralink is like if someone pitched "theranos but with brain surgery" npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover One of the first 5 Choose Your Own Adventure books from the 80's, The Mystery of Chimney Rock really spooked me as a kid in the absolute best way. npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover "The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world files didn't exist and apps could just handle everything like magic. iPadOS still sucks." npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover There is something nice about the vintage stylish flourishes on my PO box. Whenever I'm in a new US city and pass a post office I try to pop in and check out what their interior decor and PO boxes look like. The modern ones are usually plain and boring, but older post offices have some cool retro styles. npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover we need to see pressure brought to bear on municipalities that still post to twitter. on sports teams. not just advertisers, but on the people feeding a machine that now manufactures hate and incites violence from the top down. npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover Having a design properly named and structured makes everything so, so much easier. npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover You really notice the ubiquity of ad links online once you install a firewall based ad blocker. SO MANY. npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover I've posted critically of iPads lately, but wanted to highlight a killer use case. npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover The lack of search on Mastodon makes me feel like I’m on the shore looking at the surface of the water instead of diving in to the actual ocean. npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover I find it very odd that there is no Screen Sharing app on iPadOS to use native macOS screen share. npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover @npub1436…835m this is almost exactly how things are evolving for me as well. Notes is the more mundane/transient/day-to-day management of life stuff, while Obsidian is the more creative project work. npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover Well, UK and Spain, looks like you're getting the North American smoke now. npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover #[0] didn't say one node is better. I'm very pro federation. I'm proposing that Mastodon should be strategic in this moment and hit a couple key features hard in order to not lose momentum. Pretty sure we're on the same pro-fediverse/activitypub team here. npub1e37aqek9n4598jy3khcwym6ql0afk6anr2ysap0ckee5sc2rvwjsfr32gq Ethan J. A. Schoonover #[0] I haven't used it and don't mean to come off as promoting it. Unfortunately I think the single node will actually come off as a better experience for maintstream users initially if they have one less decision to make.
