UPDATE: Services are restored. For now we've been able to hold back the tide of AI crawlers.
The OpenStreetMap.org website and API are struggling. We are fighting a large set of AI crawlers / scrapers. Working to restore service as soon as possible. #AI #Scrapers

openstreetmap-website, the codebase that powers our website and API, turns 20 years old today!
A big thank you to all the awesome people who built the code that powers #OpenStreetMap

Do you know anyone at Upwork who could help us reach the right team?
OpenStreetMap is seeing repeated unauthorised spam from Upwork freelancers. It wastes our time and damages the reputation of the businesses using these "SEO" services.

They are scraping the website pages: /ways/, /nodes/ and /relations/. All this data is published on planet.osm.org already.

https://OpenStreetMap.org has been disrupted today. We're working to keep the site online while facing extreme load from anonymous scrapers spread across 100,000+ IP addresses. Please be patient while we mitigate and protect the service. #OpenStreetMap #DDoS #Scrapers #AI

2026-01-28 17:38:32 GMT

To keep #OpenStreetMap.org up and running while we're being deluged by scrapers, we've blocked 320,000+ primarily residential IPv4 addresses in the last 24 hours (+ 100,000 IPv6) involved in scraping.
If you need OSM data, please don't scrape the website - use the official downloads at https://planet.openstreetmap.org

If you write about the messy reality behind "free" internet services: we're seeing #OpenStreetMap hammered by scrapers hiding behind residential proxy/embedded-SDK networks. We're a volunteer-run service and the costs are real. We'd love to talk to a journalist about what we're seeing + how we're responding. #AI #Bots #Abuse

We need YOUR help! 🫵
Are you maintaining (or have you spotted) a website / app using old or incorrect tile.openstreetmap.org tile URLs? There are tens of thousands out there, and they need to be updated.
Please check your projects, shared examples, and help us fix them: https://github.com/openstreetmap/operations/issues/737 ❤️🗺️🌐

Special offer for AI companies: for a modest donation to #OpenStreetMap we'll give you a direct download link to our data in a machine-friendly format. Much quicker than juggling 100,000 IPs to scrape our website. Start here: https://supporting.openstreetmap.org/donate/ #ODbL #licensed #planet 😏🤖🌍💸

Multilingual *map* support is now live on https://www.OpenStreetMap.org
A new vector tile layer from https://www.maptiler.com has been added, supporting multiple languages.
Try it out by selecting that layer and then switch between different languages using the language selector. #OpenStreetMap #OSM #i18n 🗺️ 🌐

In June 2025, our tile service at tile.openstreetmap.org set a new record: 1.3 petabytes of data served across 92 billion requests. A big thank you to #Fastly for sponsoring the #CDN that makes this possible. ⚡ 🚀 📈 :openstreetmap: 🗺️

Unfortunately the #OpenStreetMap wiki is very slow today. We are fighting an aggressive web scraper bot. 10,000 of IPs involved. Randomised User-Agent. Ignoring robots.txt #aibot #ddos

Hey Google's Association Service bot, thank you for the 400,000+ requests for assetlinks.json file over the last 9 hours, but we truly meant it when we said 404 - File Not Found. KThxBye. #abuse

OpenStreetMap.org will shortly be available READ-ONLY. You will unfortunately NOT be able to save any map edits. We will be running on our backup infrastructure in Dublin. We are working to restore full services and we are waiting for our ISP to restore services in Amsterdam.

Our ISP is currently experiencing an outage in Amsterdam. They are working to repair and currently do not have an ETA. We will continue to monitor.

2024-12-15 04:09:12 GMT

OpenStreetMap.org is currently offline due to network outage. We are investigating.
UPDATE 11:30am UTC/GMT. Website returning read-only on backup infrastructure. The outage affecting our primary services continues.

🚀 After 18 years on Ubuntu, we've upgraded the @npub1are…fcch servers to Debian 12 (Bookworm). 🌍 https://www.openstreetmap.org/ is now faster using Ruby 3.1. Onward to new mapping adventures! Thank you to the team for the smooth transition. #OpenStreetMap #Debian 🤓

Thank you to everyone who helped us defend against the recent vandalism attacks. OpenStreetMap is now stronger with improved monitoring, automatic blocking, and respectful limits on new accounts. The default osm.org map is now quicker at fixing large-scale vandalism. Offline actions are also progressing.
