Mark Carney's MOU with Danielle Smith required a private backer for his new pipeline, a carbon capture facility to reduce emissions at the source, deleting the tanker moratorium on the BC Coast, and a minimum price for industrial carbon emissions in Alberta of $130/tonne by 2030.
So far, Carney has no private backer for the pipeline, had the Pathways Alliance (now calling themselves the Oilsands Alliance) back out of carbon capture (which doesn't work anyway), faced nothing but determined resistance from Coastal First Nations in BC over the tanker moratorium, and now he's caving entirely on Alberta's industrial carbon emissions.
None of the conditions in his MOU have been met, and Mark Carney just keeps on retreating and backing down.

I've heard this line of reasoning before -- but there's really nothing progressive about Carney's pursuit of fossil fuels, widespread cuts to our services, support of Donald Trump and alignment with Danielle Smith and Doug Ford. Even Mulroney was to the left of Carney, which is saying a lot.

Honestly, it actually doesn't matter. In Egypt, Mubarak's famously repressive government had never been interested in democracy, and the Arab Spring protests pushed him out of office after just 18 days.

Carney has backed down on tariffs, our DST, meeting Trump's arbitrary military spending targets, the F-35 purchase, joining Trump's idiotic Golden Dome boondoggle, suggested resurrecting the long-dead Keystone XL to please Trump, put forward egregious bills like C-2 specifically to satisfy Trump -- and that's just for starters. Carney was elected on a promise to stand up to Trump, but all he's done so far is surrender, retreat, and publicly grovel (e.g. in Kannanaskis). All this has (predictably) gained nothing whatsoever for Canada.
Note how Mexico president Claudia Sheinbaum -- whose country is arguably at significantly greater risk than Canada -- did not retreat from criticising Trump's violations of international law over Venezuela. Carney's not playing 4D chess, he's just weak, or -- even worse -- on Trump's side, like Poilievre.

It's not just Venezuela, as the article points out. When Trump withdrew from trade negotiations over Ontario's (accurate) Reagan commercial, when Trump sanctioned judges at the ICC (including a Canadian), as Trump threatens Greenland, etc -- Carney always, *always* retreats. Canada's values are supposed to include human rights and international law -- though if you've been watching Carney for the last year, you'd never know it.
Also, keep in mind that Trump has repeatedly threatened Canada's own security. If we won't stand with other countries when they're targeted by a rogue United States, how can we expect anyone to stand with us when it's our turn?

It's difficult to guess what some of these leaders are thinking - e.g., Norway, the Netherlands, Spain etc have been very clear in pushing back against US threats; meanwhile, Carney is doing his best to appear invisible, while Starmer seems to be flip-flopping on his earlier statement supporting Greenland's soverignty.
You'd think that after ten years of Trump, all these politicians would have realized the obvious - there's no way anyone can surrender hard enough to guarantee safety from this criminal.
