Everybody's going on about "AI" coding agents, but what about the other background stuff that really needs to happen that's languishing?
What I think someone needs to do is go through the entire #Debian bug tracker and find reports against versions that are no longer actively supported. There's bugs against Firefox 65 still in the system that are never gonna get touched. Close them. If it's still a problem in the current version the reporter can re-open the issue or open a new one, tagging current.
There are probably hundreds if not thousands of reports that could get silently dropped. Don't even get me started on how many there are in ifupdown alone. How does anyone manage to wade through that?

To those starting their migration from Ubuntu to Debian today after the former's AI announcement: Welcome! I've been a Debian user for ~30 years now. I moved the last of my Ubuntu stuff back some years ago when they started their Snap shenanigans.
But, be advised: Debian's systemd package maintainer is an upstream contributor who works for Microsoft and is an utter jerk. Receipts are in the bug tracker, and the most recent kerfuffle was loud enough that one of my replies got quoted in LWN. systemd is also flirting with AI and age gate compliance, and the distro integration gets tighter with every release. So while "Here be dragons" may still be a bit premature, they are hovering outside the castle.

Poked #AlpineLinux a bit more yesterday. One #ipv6 nit I'm trying to chase down: The installer environment does not appear to have any means of acquiring DNS information via RDNSS. busybox has a dhcpv6 client, but I'm not running DHCPv6 on most of my main networks.
Does busybox have this functionality and I'm not yet aware of it, or is this something that needs to be added? Or is there some other way to go about this?
I was able to manually configure DNS for the install then apk add rdnssd in the installed environment, but this is sub-optimal.

The Homework Machine
by Shel Silverstein
The Homework Machine,
Oh, the Homework Machine,
Most perfect
contraption that's ever been seen.
Just put in your homework, then drop in a dime,
Snap on the switch, and in ten seconds' time,
Your homework comes out, quick and clean as can be.
Here it is— 'nine plus four?' and the answer is 'three.'
Three?
Oh me . . .
I guess it's not as perfect
As I thought it would be.

Happy Eyeballs has been a disaster for #IPv6 transition. We've trained a whole generation of admins that it's OK if your v6 doesn't work, the client will just fall back to IPv4. What if the client has no legacy connectivity to fall back on? That was (and still is) the goal.

@nprofile…eqsh I thought that was illegal, but I can't find any supporting documentation now.
That does remind me of the time I was in a crowded airport and thought I heard SOS and went into a bit of a panic. When I heard it again it was a phone chirping SMS to indicate it had received a text.

I keep coming across programs that still prefer IPv4 even when a viable #IPv6 path is available. Part of me wants to file bug reports to get them to follow the spec. The other part of me just finds a way to return an IPv6-only record for the thing I want to talk to and it usually works.

Signal is presently considered the gold standard for encrypted messaging. Organizers everywhere are driving people to it.
It's still a single point of failure. I mean that from a social perspective. There could be a rug pull from any number of actors at any point. Governments could order it blocked or shut down. Signal Foundation itself could pull the plug for protective reasons. etc.
So, what's the backup plan? We need to figure that out now so we're not scrambling if/when it happens. Here's the thing: the solution might look different for varying user bases. And that's OK.

I'm having ideas faster than I can implement them so I'm gonna throw this one out here. Maybe I'll accidentally nerdsnipe someone else :)
XMPP to APRS-IS messaging gateway
This would let you use your standard IM client (Gajim, Conversations, et al) to send and receive APRS messages. I imagine it would be relatively straightforward to implement using something like https://slidge.im/ doing some basic format translations. Future advanced features could include using the APRS station comment as the presence message for the XMPP contact.

Most things out in the Fediverse tend to stay virtual for me, so when @nprofile…l4t6 mentioned they had an actual physical book out in the world I checked my local library's catalog. It was in there! It had a wait list so I had to put a hold on it.
Well, first I had to go re-activate my library card. I don't use it nearly as often as I should. But we gotta keep those circulation numbers up.
So here's what I got to read last night:

@nprofile…fpf4 Which vps provider, so we can steer clear of them? #ipv6

2025-08-04 16:38:01 GMT

iproute2 is inconsistent with its rules of showing IPv4 and #IPv6 output.
ip neighbor show - lists both address families
ip route show - defaults to IPv4, must use -6 flag to show IPv6 routes
I'd rather everything go ahead and show both families and require -4 or -6 if I want to filter. I think IPv6 first, so when I'm sitting on an IPv6-only node and 'ip route' gives no output, I get annoyed.

Dathon: Miles O'Brien! On an average day!
Martok: Oh it's you again... uhh, Will Smith and Chris Rock at the Oscars.

Dathon: Captain America, the reference understood.
Martok: Turkish guy at the Summer Olympics?
[The display is now showing a Windows "Blue Screen" error message]
Dathon: The Summer Olympics... an Australian breakdancer.
Martok: That bad, huh? Alright only one thing to do... How should I put this... Uhhh... A cheap submarine, 5 billionaires within.
[Frame caption: "Spongebob, a brief intermission:" The Cybertruck is ablaze in a shallow pool of water. Dathon is standing next to a man in a crisp white shirt and black tie holding a clipboard with some paperwork.
[Dathon is sheathing his blade. Behind him is a Toyota Hilux pickup truck.]
Dathon: DiCaprio his glass raised.
