One of Australia's grand old buildings, Parramatta Town Hall, during Parramatta Open. While I've posted this building before, it's been when it's set up for an event. Tomorrow, I'll post some more images of some areas usually off limits to the public.

Along with the big food expo hall, the Royal Easter Show also awards prizes for the best foods in a number of categories, like cakes, and cake decorating.
On the day I visited, they were awarding prizes for honey. Here are some winners.

Parramatta, circa 1870, as depicted by Albert Henry Fullwood.
This drawing is from the corner of Marsden & Campbell Streets, facing north.
In the second image, I've highlighted some local landmarks. The train line is in pink, St John's (the Anglican church in Parramatta Square) is in purple, and the town hall is in blue.

Many cities abandon their Olympic stadia pretty much as soon as the games end.
Meanwhile, 25 years on, Sydney Olympic Park still gets regular use.
Not only that, but in the coming years, it will receive both a metro station on the new Parramatta metro line, as well as an extension of the Parramatta light rail.
Here it is with cherry blossoms in full bloom.

An exhibition at the Centraal Museum Utrecht focusing on the pioneering modernist industrial designer, artist, and architect Gerrit Rietveld.
Part of the De Stijl art movement, Rietveld was basically a bridge between the art of cubist painters like Picasso and Cézanne, and the world of design.
In turn, Reitveld and his peers had a wide influence that extended from Bahaus to the cartoon drawings of Dick Bruna.

I've heard so many times that it's not economical to have train services to some small towns in the US or Australia. Well, here's how they do it in Lithuania: A single carriage train.

Basketball is basically a national religion in Lithuania. Across the bridge at the end of S Daukanto gatvė, next to the park, is its shiny glass cathedral: The Žalgiris Euroleague basketball club's arena.

Quinten Massys, "The Ugly Dutchess", 1513.
I'll be honest. 16th Century portraits of nobility can be kind-of a bore. So hats off to Massys for this piece of political satire.

There's currently an exhibition on colonial Australian fashion on display upstairs at Old Government House. Before synthetic fabrics, it was common to de-stitch dresses and then re-make them in the current style, with the fabrics often handed down over generations. #history #museum #australia #fashion #dress

Want to know why there's a sculpture of a bus in the middle of Parramatta Square?
In 1981, the Parramatta Eels won the grand final in the predecessor to the National Rugby League.
Many fans gathered at the team's home ground, Cumberland Oval (which was on the site of CommBank Stadium) and the celebrations got a bit rowdy.
And by "got a bit rowdy", I mean they burnt the stadium down to the ground.
Without a stadium, the following season the team held its meetings in a secondhand 1960s Leyland Worldmaster bus.
But that's not the only piece of local history commemorated by this sculpture by Claire Healy & Sean Cordeiro, titled "Place of the Eels".
One side of the bus is inscribed with the words "Flying Pieman". It's a reference to a local baker named William Francis King, who used to sell pies to people boarding the ferry to Parra at Sydney's Circular Quay in the 1870s.
After the ferry left, Mr King reputedly packed up his pie cart, then ran the 30-odd kilometres to Parramatta by foot. He would then set up his cart at Parramatta Wharf in time to sell more pies to passengers as they disembarked the ferry.
The other side of the bus is inscribed with the name "Rosie Bint Broheen". In 1922, Rosie became the first Lebanese woman to buy land in Parramatta.
The sculpture also includes some hidden messages, in reference to the Parramatta Industrial School for Girls, which was a notorious children's welfare institution that operated from 1887-1974. It was home to many members of the Stolen Generations.

The exhibition includes works from Matthew Harris (an Aboriginal artist originally from Wangaratta who now lives in Melbourne), Hode Afshar, and Wiradjuri/Kamilaroi photographer Michael Riley.
