Never liked IRC much myself. You have to constantly broadcast your online status, and if your connection is flaky it just dies and reconnects endlessly until you're back to regular activity reporting. You kind of feel on the spot to act, since otherwise you're standing around awkwardly, and when reality ensues, you have the very uncomfortable experience of having 1000 people constantly auto-broadcasting that "yes I am in the channel and online" but none of them are doing anything.
Nobody could get a list of the number of lurkers on a Usenet group.

Usenet was like that, except forums could federate their articles, and their targeted selection of groups depended on what er... groups they were willing to host. People started getting spammed though, and started protecting themselves using PGP to recognize each other and avoid spammers. And the corporates were like "ohhhh no," and went full disinfo campaign to get people to not do that.
Independent unfederated web forums were sort of a coping mechanism for that pressure. Something that sorta worked, and didn't threaten the corporate hegemony, so corporates tolerated it, because they could take their time scheming how to destroy forums without any risk of anyone stopping them. That's when they started promoting MySpace then Facebook, and everything went predictably downhill from there.
And yeah IRC outlived both Usenet and Web Forums, but then got killed by Discord.
That's been my experience at least.

My only question is how to keep the other states from coming in and saving you from lawlessness with brutal military interventions? Open source licenses are different from open source. Open source is the mechanism by which software doesn't exploit people, by giving those people the source code. Open source licensing is the software writer adding a document stating it can be used for un-free reasons, because they love corporations unlike those free software Communists, but you have to give it to people, and they added "no takebacksies" at the bottom.
I agree that free software licenses are... better than "totes open source guys" licenses. But they're both pretty clownish. How are you gonna stop someone from deriving from your source in their closed source software? What about people who derives from your source, but don't agree to your software license?

Open source software is software whose source code is accessible, and usable, without any obfuscation, compilation, or removal of information known to the people writing it. With notable exception for overly large, highly coupled projects (cough Firefox cough) which I consider a form of obfuscation.
Free software is software whose writer wrote a document stating that it cannot be used for un-free reasons (such as commercial software), and they added "no takebacksies" at the bottom so you have to do what they say.

Heh, yeah. "Open source" is high quality grade A bullshit. Because it *is* bad that people get to close the source, and even make reverse engineering illegal. Open source *is* good, because as long as the source is open, people can change it if it's bad.
But it kind of dodges the policy and protocol, where open source software is not exactly free. Just because the mechanism exists to fix things doesn't mean you won't be attacked for using it, as a "cheater," (though the bosses get to cheat as much as they want ofc.) Stopping that validation of punching down is important, as is preventing people from profiting from other people's hard work.
Personally I think "free software" is a joke, but at least they try to go after profiteers, in a limp wristed good boy sort of way. But reframing it as "open source" to give a free pass to profiteers is way worse, and shouldn't be in any article criticizing the software industry.

Opened my eye without eyedrops at like 1:30am last night. For some reason I was convinced that getting my eye to water is the only way to deal with the pain, so I blinked several times. Was in blistering pain after that with streaming tears for about an hour, but I finally healed enough I could keep my eyes closed. Woke up in pain several more times during the night, but managed to use eyedrops to mitigate the damage. Now my eye is stinging, red and sore, but I can finally take some aspirin since it's breakfast time. Just hoping it helps.

Personally I've never seen love win um, ever. Even our stories are about how tragic it is that people truelove each other but it cannot be. The only power love seems to have is making people think it's the most powerful.
But I'm more thinking about how love remains pure and pristine (and useless) because we don't combine it with greed, ambition, and hatred. You can have all your greed related needs met through markets, freeing you to have a greedless, giving, selfless, etc love for Jesus, which feels great! Except when you're at work.
But without markets, you can't love like that, since you can't take care of yourself if you do. So valuing love means you value markets, and won't abolish them.
Like we used to have arranged marriages. Why'd that stop? Those were great! (Hint: well funded propaganda.)

It's structural/systemic more than anything. Even the liberal leftie Jesus teaches people that they are not worthy, and only a higher authority can make the right choices for them. And even progressive "accepting" churches are run by a small group who do not attend the churches they own. That's fine if your "Reconciling" Methodist bishops aren't fascist, but you can imagine how quickly things might transition, as parishoners learn that they are on the bottom of a very tight hierarchy that does not include them in the decision making process.
Ironically, the Baptists are the least likely to get compromised by fascists, since they *have* no hierarchy and are a loose collection of independent churches. Not sure what happened there.
Oh also the Unitarian Universalists, the members own the building. It still has a hierarchy, though (and in the past got orders from on high to be "more churchy" and hate on atheists since it'd attract atheophobes to join which is a desirable thing for some reason).

Most Mastodon instances will cache those locally and give you like
https://your.instance/their.instance/status/someone/1234512345 with the URL for the whole other website tacked onto your instance's website. I've actually found it hard to get the original URL of a post.
There's no easy way to generate that tacked-on link though, so if someone wants to link to a post, but not reply to it, all they can do is post the whole-other-website link in their message.

The best way to determine some text is not AI-stolen rejiggered garbage is to have an existing relationship with the poster, who's produced many legit things in the past. When you can't though, it's not safe to give them the benefit of the doubt these days. If you can't spot AI "tells" then you WILL get bad medical advice, you WILL get cheated and screw over authors you love and politicians on your side in the process, and you WILL inadvertently betray your friends by accidentally following AI bots, and unsuspectingly feeding them everything you boost to give them new victims to target. It is so much better to mistake someone for an AI, than to trust an AI because you might make someone feel bad.
It's not perfect, looking for—em dashes. I only have vague heuristic guesswork techniques, like looking for repetition, or stuff mixed together weirdly, or lack of any uncommon rarely seen grammar quirks. But we have to do something. Unless you have a plan to blow up the data centers and get away with it, in which case sign me up! That'd solve our problem good!

Impulsively buying exotic animals is a very bad idea, and should absolutely be discouraged. But we are living in an ecosystem. We can't cut people off from the other lifeforms that live here. Getting our meat from supermarkets, plastic wrapped. Street lights so bright you can't see the stars, much less creatures of the night. People who have lived their whole lives, and the only living being they've ever seen is another human being.
In practise, most people with pet raccoons or pet foxes are not going to do those animals right, and the relationship will end badly. I just think the solution isn't to forbid humans from interacting with other animals, but rather to teach (and reward) people for living together with their furry and feathered neighbors, to their mutual benefit.
Calling them "wild" animals is something from an age where we were determined to decimate all wilderness and replace it with God approved farmland. I'd sooner call them "vermin." Doesn't mean it's a good idea to pet a raccoon, but if someone can get it to accept pets and snuggles... I'm kind of impressed. And suspicious that they got it high on pot or something.

There are also some serious tells that subversive agents can't exactly get around. They need to collect info from members, so they'll act like people who need that info. They can't have a well established reputation, so they have to dodge inquiries into their past and personal lives. They have to ingratiate themselves with members at first, and they have to infect the group with a hierarchy. So if someone starts "rising to the top" super fast, because they're so nice and helpful and have tons of resources to share but nobody knows exactly why, and they're talking about the need to assert power and control over the Bad members (for reasons you can't deny without becoming Bad) then it's uh... time for mitosis, so to speak.
You could write a book on how to identify bad actors, and how to identify false flag groups aimed at snatching up activists and keeping them from organizing. That would really help. We're all joining the wrong tribes.

One good strategy to keeping subversive agents out of your movements is something the subversive agents have told us are called "terrorist cells." I saw a weird furry comic the other day that pointed out something interesting. People don't need religion to have hope. They'll hope for a better life, or a mating partner, or that to be chosen for that cushy job on the third floor. They'll find heroes and role models all by themselves. What religion does is it takes that hope, and replaces it with someting more... exploitable. You can no longer hope for things to get better you can only hope for God to make things better. You can no longer hope that you'll improve. You can only hope for God to improve you, if you can be sufficiently servile to Him. You can't count on yourself, only God acting through you.
So that's kind of why I think religion is stinky and bad. To quote another extremely obscure source that'd be a huge spoiler if I revealed it:

They pick the next word according to what the most likely next word is. With some randomness thrown in to keep them from going into infinite loops. That's it. The only distinction is they can guess relatively well according to what the past several dozen (hundred?) words are. They're still guessing based on nothing but randomness, and their training data, which are people's words.
It really becomes apparent when you ask them to write something with a lot of words, like a book. But even "press releases" are long enough it's pretty obvious. And they're only repeating what people have already said, just randomly mixed up to give you the illusion that it's something new, by hiding their sources.

The fact that you're defining things in terms of dollar hours, when the dollar is so hopelessly compromised, makes me feel like we won't get anywhere here. A combine harvester devours fossil fuels and requires massive steel refineries to build, and offers no real advantage other than letting one person steal all the farmland without agriculture collapsing, and it produces much, much more decent results than any AI datacenter. If you think they care whether it's effective, and you think that it's going to improve as they prophecize while the technology wallows in the terrible idea it has always been, you might have another thing coming.
The slop is the point. They're trying to ruin everything faster than we can keep up, so we'll be powerless to hold them accountable for their actual crimes against humanity. Not the AI, the rich fucks who are ordering us to build pointless machines because useful idiots like you keep thinking that maybe it isn't all a bunch of BS.

When I tried it a... while ago, SSB worked fine, but slowed down and started doing a lot of disk grinding as the database grew to multiple gigabytes, and you couldn't clean out any old posts. Took a while, so many people probably haven't run into that. I also may have been doing something wrong.

Ostensibly it's because when Puerto Rico voted to become a state, there wasn't enough voter turnout, and the USA won't stand for low voter turnout. How could an election possibly be valid if only 45% of the population voted? Not anything like US elections, no sirree.

I think it was CCGs. Those completely grabbed roleplayers and got them hooked on gambling like you wouldn't believe. I can't find people into "roleplaying" these days who don't love playing with the CCG decks that they paid money for (for some reason) and sit there hoping randomly drawing cards will make them win. WotC's success was owed to Magic the Gathering (and lack of enforcement of gambling regulations), so that's the connection. The company got enough bank to buy TSR, through the same technique that trained roleplayers to value optimizing, since that's how you play CCGs.
Like seriously, my first real gaming group started that shit and I dunno why I was immune. I'd try to make up like, stories about what was happening in the game, with the lands and the creatures and everyone else just ignored me and was like "I'm going to tap 2 mountains and a plains to bring out the etc" and nothing but that forever.

You shouldn't speak to them at all. They don't have to understand. You just have to take away their power, one way or another. Ideally they won't understand at all, and will just lose in bewilderment.
You kill them because it puts them out of power, not because they understand. If you reject any obligations and debts they claim, stopping anyone who tries to enforce them, it has the same effect. You cheat a landlord, the world gets better. You blow up a data center killing no one, and the world gets better. You sabatoge supply lines, slash tires, steal property to redistribute to those who need it, the world gets better. Manufacture medicine illegally, and you're already saving lives, and fucking over fascists.

Well I write Romance and I shit on the genre constantly. So many greedy bastards out there trying to play with our heartstrings to turn us into money machines. That's why Sci-fi is "better" because it doesn't have the same incentive for manipulative twats to crowd in and dictate how people shall love each other, trying to make us all sad and alone (and good customers).
But it is sad that legit authors who just want characters with relationships get lumped in with all the BS.
...then again my sort of Romance is offensive and deeply disturbing to most people, so maybe I'm not speaking from the same headspace.

It's not unique to the USA, unfortunately. Remember the Holodomor? Turns out the more people suffer, the *less* likely they are to revolt, because they're too weak from all the suffering. The only thing that ever caused meaningful social change was power. When people get power over authorities, things change, but no amount of suffering can do it. When we are hurting so bad that we can't take it anymore, we don't rise up and cast off the yoke of our masters. We die.

When someone replies to your post, you do n-o-t help distribute that reply in any way. The Fediverse is kind of stupid about that actually, but in this case it sorta works out. Only you, and people who follow that person, get the reply. It isn't forwarded anywhere from there.
When *you* reply to them, your reply is forwarded to your followers. But not theirs. Still. Each follower has to request their reply from their instance. That's why your friend might reply to a post that's not there, because whoever they replied to won't send you their post.
So don't worry if you see an obnoxious reply. You can delete the post personally, if you have your own instance. You can block the person if you really can't stand to see it. But ignoring them won't make them more visible to anyone, other than the people who already know about them, and want to hear from them.
On that note, if you want your obedient followers to dogpile on someone, be sure to reply to their reply before blocking that someone, so everyone can know what a bad person they are.

Put my blankets and bedsheets in the washer at around 7:30pm. They'd be ready for the drier by 8:30 at least. Instead, I tried to figure out how to get random towns to have potato instead of wheat in their farms. 5 hours later I hhad failed, and then I realized I forgot to put my blankets ands bedsheets in the drier. Now I have to stay up until 2am waiting for them to get dry.

The clipboard should just be a file like ~/.clipboard, none of that ridiculous primary secondary clipboard protocol server BS.
Primary sucks because you can't select text without overwriting it. Secondary sucks because it doesn't do anything, doesn't work, and nobody uses it. XA_CLIPBOARD sucks because of aforementioned BS and the fact that the Primary clipboard is default so you always have to explicitly specify that you want to use the clipboard clipboard when you do.
