I firmly believe that AI/MML/ML is never going to get better. All it will ever do is get faster, which means faster at generating bullshit. The entire premise is inherently flawed. You can't train it to be smarter, all you can do is enforce existing biases because of all the LLM generated content out there infecting new training models. The only counter to this is to change the code, which is like stacking epicycles on the geocentric solar system model in an effort to explain all the one off cases you keep finding. Bad training data and ever increasing code complexity is never going to reach the singularity. Hell, it will likely never stop telling people to glue their cheese to their pizza, it will just make the prompts more obtuse, but people will find them.
Meanwhile, we are trying to replace artists, musicians, and writers with AI, sucking the true joys out of life in the name of the almighty dollar.
if you use AI, you are culpable in this world becoming an objectively shittier place.

So, I was thinking about this batshite solution I encountered a few years ago. An industrial fab facility had a SAP server, big honking beast of a machine, 256 GB of RAM, and this was 2019, so yeah, money was spent.
But the database (mysql) was ostensibly, too slow. Their SAP consultants solution?
On boot, the system would take 128 GB of RAM, and create a ramdisk mounted on /mysql. It would then copy /var/lib/mysql, or wherever MySQL was stored into /mysql, and start the mysqld with flags to use the ramdisk.
Yes, this was absolutely insane, and tremendously fragile. But I digress. Every night at 0300, the mysqld was shutdown, and /mysql was rsynced to permanent storage. So, if they lost power in the middle of the day they lost potentially hours of work that had to be manually re-entered.
The punchline to this joke is that backing up the ramdisk to disk took about 40-45 minutes. The UPS backing this server had about half that in runtime. So, it never did anything even remotely useful. In fact, it sometimes lead to some terrible corruptions that had to be painstakingly repaired. Yes, they did have a script that was triggered by the UPS going on battery. It never finished on time.
Anyways...... My brain was thinking about this, and decided..... CAN WE MAKE THIS WORK?!?!?!?!!111???/one?!//111
I think we can, but I would like to state that this is insane, and probably _really_ expensive for fairly little gain.
But hear me out. System boots from a single disk ZFS stripe, creates a RAMDISK and adds it to the zpool as a mirror. Obviously, this would only work for smaller disks or shitloads of RAM, and really only benefits read performance.
Would I do this? Probably only to see if I could make it work, I doubt it is actually a useful solution. But, it popped into my head just now, and I had to get it out, just so my brain would stop thinking about it.

I swear to all that is unholy, I can SMELL so called network engineers who learned base concepts on RouterOS at this point. The arguments they make, their base understandings of concepts, you can just tell.
Is my blanket, blatant hatred of @nprofile…23pk completely deserved? Probably not. They do make cheap 10gigE ports with decent capabilities. I still won't touch them, and I actively refuse jobs that involve Mikrotik work anymore. Simply because as much as I enjoy a good challenge, I do not like tilting at windmills. Fixing your average Mikrotik network is about as much fun as autoappendectomy. See also: Fuck you, Chris.
But is RouterOS a good learning platform? FUCK NO. RouterOS is to networking as Pascal is to programming. You may learn some base concepts, but you will bring along some terrible baggage. You will learn some great for Mikrotik, terrible everywhere else techniques that make you the bane of your IT department.
After nearly 30 years in this field, there are certain..... quirks..... that only a foundational knowledge of Mikrotik will tell you are a good idea.
Seas of routers on sticks, endless EoIP tunnels, ridiculous overuse of NAT.... you can learn all these bad ideas somewhere else, but I see them EVERYWHERE on Mikrotik networks.
This is _why_ I loathe Mikrotik so much. Well, all that, and because that dude named Butch on AFMUG was a pretentious hogfucker.

For all the little scripts I have written over the years that occasionally replace very large, complicated GUI programs. Stuff like how I unload pictures from my DSLR, and how I pick which wireguard tunnel I want to bring up. Today's adventures with bsddialog were a part of making some of them friendly enough to share.

Meticulously document your physical plant from day one. Label cabinets, racks, cables, rooms, facilities, ports, all of the physical realm needs labels. Those labels should align with your documentation and naming convention, and everything should be audited regularly. Do this at the time of design, and update it throughout the installation process, as well as during any changes. It is significantly harder to go back and document it later.
1st Corollary:
Incorrect or misleading labels are almost always worse than no label.
2nd Corollary:
If you are changing things so regularly that you can't keep up with some sort of proper labeling, consider not labeling your cables at all.

Story time.
You may or may not know this, because I have not made much effort to be in the public view of my past chosen social circles since about 2016, but I am trans.....something. I go both ways, guy, gurl, down the middle most days. I don't really care for labels, but whatever it is I am doesn't really matter. The point of this story is my sister. My sister was one of the first people who truly accepted me for who I am, with no baggage. That'll matter later.
One night, very early after I had come out, we were hanging out at a local pub. Chilling with friends, singing karaoke, and generally being merry.
I would like to point out that I have a deep voice, no ability to disguise that aspect of myself, and my preferred footwear is platform stilettos that make me stand over 6'8 tall. Sandy blonde hair down to my ass with a bleach blonde stripe framing my face. In other words, I'm a towering amazon wearing sunglasses at night in skintight jeans...... often singing Billy Idol karaoke. Just to paint a picture, you'd have to be exceedingly drunk to mistake me for a genetic woman.
Side note, I once heard someone explain to someone else at a hacker convention when asked, "nuintari? who is that?"
They replied, "heels."
"Ohhhhhh!"
Those black and red thigh highs.... I still have them. Anyways, back to it.
This drunk man comes up to me, and starts laying it on _thick_. Saying some really crude stuff I am sure he thought was pure poetry. It was basically the verbal equivalent of an unsolicited dick pic. "Oh baby, you come home with me, I kiss you where you like it." Yes, he was exceedingly drunk.
I tried repeatedly to brush him off, but as I got more aggressive about my denials he just got closer. At one point I even stated coldly, "Dude, you don't understand, I have a PENIS, you don't want this."
He simply replied, "Awww baby, it ain't no thang," and then he started getting handsy.
Cue my sister, who at this point, I need to make sure you are all aware of her stature. My sister is a former gymnast. She is 4'11, 90 lbs soaking wet, holding a cinder block. She is not a big person by any measure. This fella was significantly shorter than me, but that was true for anything in the bar including most of the neon signs. He was taller than her, and most definitely heavier.
But that doesn't stop her. No sir, she squeezes right between me and this overbearing sweatbag, pushes him back a step, looks him right in the eyes and states very firmly, "Back off, she's mine."
And.... it fucking worked. He backed down. He walked away, defeated. I could hear him ranting to his friends later on, "Oh, that bitch was such a tease, but she a fucking dyke! I was gonna get me some of that"
The best part was, his friends were laughing at him, and one even apologized for his behavior and bought my sister and I a beer.
My sister forgot my birthday this year. It was three weeks ago and she has yet to say so much as say happy birthday via text. But another post I saw here on the Fedi inspired me to tell this story. Telling it made me realize, for all she has ever done for me, for how much she has always been there for me, I can forgive her forgetting a stupid date. I'm gonna wish her a happy birthday after all. It's today.

#Enshitification is everywhere these days. I had to get new tires on my car, the old ones were not that old, but they had worn down to a depth of 5 (as in 5/32 in), which is nearly replacement depth. It turns out, they don't make the tread depth on tires nearly as deep as they used to. My "brand new" tires that I had installed last Monday are at an 8. New tires for most non-truck vehicles used to start at 11 or 12. You are supposed to change them when they are at a 4.
My wife works in auto damage, and she has been seeing this trend for the last several years. Tires are manufactured to have less longevity, but the prices haven't come down to match. Accidents that destroy tires that still have a depth higher than 8 are fun, as insurance is required to replace with like kind quality. But this is nearly impossible now, so they have to pay out an allotment for the shittier "new" tires they are forced to install.
For reference, a tread depth of 7 is only considered "Okay" as far as traction is concerned. So brand new tires starting at an 8 quickly degrade below optimal traction.
It's all about the Benjamins.

Alright, one more reason to love #FreeBSD:
I just upgraded one of my nuidns servers without issue. For those who don't know, nuidns is my rocinante+bastille based jail system for anycasted authoritative and recursive DNS. It has two commands, create and destroy. All I had to do was bootstrap 15.0-RELEASE with @nprofile…qkvd - and update the rocinante scripts to use the newer release, then run a destroy, followed by a create. Done, no errors, no warnings.
My hard work on this system over the years is certainly part of why it works so well. But FreeBSD's dedication to the principle of least surprise is what makes it possible. If I had done this with Linux+Docker, I would likely have to retool it with every major distro release and often for the minor ones.
I love FreeBSD because it just works, and it does so consistently.

The syncthing-android fiasco tells me one simple truth: Github solved none of the issues facing open source software distribution. No one can decide if the new repos are safe, why the original repo disappeared, nor what happened to the original author. The signing keys have apparently been granted to a new maintainer in a new repo, and yet there is zero trust that this ins't a prelude to a new version of syncthing for Android that will be filled ads, tracking, and worse.

@nprofile…x4wz So, freebsd-update still works for 15.0. It is an option for now, but it is going away in favor of pkgbase in 16.0. Don't feel pressured to jump now, even if you do decide to rev to 15.0 now. I recomend testing small right now.
As for 15.0 vs 14.4? How critical is this, and how comfortable dealing with issues?
Me? My home stuff is going to 15.0.
My work shit may rev to 14.4 while I wait for a few patches to 15.0 to emerge. But I always prefer to run the most recent -RELEASE. That is just me.
Adopting .0 releases close to day zero is always a bit risky, but so far, I have not had any issues that could not be mitigated by installing compat14-${ARCH} and the occasional `pkg upgrade -f <pkgname>`
And that last bit is likely only necessary because my home network relies on a local poudriere repo for packages. I am existing in a hybrid state while I build packages for 15.0. If you aren't running a local pkg repo, you likely don't have this issue.

At this point, I think the only legitimate use of machine learning is in the detection of AI/LLM generated content, so the user can avoid it like the plague of locusts it is.
Machine learning _could_ have been a useful tech, and there are places using it to automate tasks no human would ever want to do manually. But those are the exception, not the rule anymore. The vast majority of AI/LLM is used to generate clickbait. AI slop as they call it, and a significant percentage of the Internet is now covered in it. We need tools to detect and evade it, and I think ML could be used to do this. But all other ML efforts at this point are effectively tainted. I firmly believe it is time to go all Twelve Colonies of Kobol on this shit; destroy it all, and ban any and all development.
As it stands AI/LLM is apparently the future, and the future fucking sucks.

I love all the accounts across the Fediverse that are damn near constantly screeching, "Stop recommending Linux, Linux hardware support is still not there! People can't figure out how to install devices in Linux! Linux is too hard for everyday use!"
Kimball bought a new game on Steam, and it said it needed a controller for the best experience. So I dusted off a game pad, put some fresh batteries in the controller, and handed her the little USB/bluetooth dongle.
A few alerts popped up about a new device in the corner of the screen, and without even restarting the game, it was working fine.
Course, half an hour later, she was playing the game with a keyboard and mouse. "The controls are just like Stardew Valley, I dunno why they recommended a controller for the best experience."
But the point is, it just fracking worked. Every piece of hardware on her machine works. Every piece of hardware on my machine works.
I swear, some people are still trapped being miserable in Windows11, and want everyone else to be as miserable as them or something.
Cue the people yelling about poor application support....

In my slow paced, but ever steady quest to eliminate my dependence on Google, I have recently moved my contacts to Nextcloud. The application I downloaded to perform the sync, DavX, also does tasks and calendars. This lead me down the rabbit hole of finding an Android calendar app that will actually let me _not_ sync the phone's Google account's calendar. For access to the official app store, I will have to keep a phone signed in to the evil, at least for now...
So, I ended up back in F-Droid and Accrescent looking for calendar apps, and I realized something. These alternate app stores are what the Android world _used_ to be like. They are full of wonderful tools, well designed, with your phone in mind. Finding useful software is a simple search or browse away. There is nary a clicker, idle, or pay to win game to be found. Most importantly, no fucking ads.
The alternate app stores are a glimpse into what corporate greed took from us. They are an example of the kind of things we could have if #enshitification wasn't the order of the day.

So, I get to build some ZFS file servers for $dayJorb. These will be hosting VM images. Does anyone have any thoughts on disk types and layout? I'm hoping for about 30 TB of usable space each. The last time I got to build this big, we did it with spinning rust because we were cost constrained. I am being lead to believe I have significant funding this time.

Why doesn't #OpenBSD support #ZFS ? Is it ideological, or just financial?
I'm going to bed. I fully expect to get flamed into the ground for even asking. My phone is set to silent.
I ran OpenBSD as my primary fileserver from 1999 until 2011 or so, when ZFS and #FreeBSD were the far more obvious choice.

#DNS isn't the problem. DNS is almost never the actual problem. DNS is incredibly stable.
A resource failing to resolve because it's record was incorrectly changed or removed is not a failure of DNS. It is the failure of whatever made the change.
DNS didn't fail today for #AWS, a record got changed somehow and DNS obeyed.
I hate the, "It's always DNS," trope because it reveals a deep misunderstanding off how DNS works and what it actually does.
The mental gymnastics people will make to blame DNS for everything drive me fucking crazy.
