🎉 Great news! Microsoft is fined €8,5 million by the Norwegian Data Protection Authority for sharing personal data to potentially thousands of companies!
⚠️ In 2020, we exposed how the dating app Grindr was sharing personal data with Xandr (later aquired by Microsoft), which in turn reserved the right to share this information with 4000+ companies (see illustration). https://www.forbrukerradet.no/side/microsoft-company-fined-85-million-euros-following-complaint-by-the-norwegian-consumer-council-and-noyb/

🦄Big Tech has repeatedly followed a familiar playbook: rush new technologies to market, normalise potentially harmful practices, and then fight regulation and slow-roll enforcement when policymakers try to catch up. Meta’s smart glasses should be seen in this context.

⚠️ Today, Norwegian Consumer Council and @npub1ezr…2hxu filed a legal complaint against Schibsted, one of Norway’s largest commercial news publishers, for breaching several provisions of the GDPR.
💵 The complaint follows Schibsted’s introduction of “pay-or-consent” model on its news websites. People are asked to either pay to protect their privacy, or “consent” to their personal data being shared with the advertising industry.

1/ We are not talking enough about Snapchat, the race for AI hegemony and the lack of enforcement of tech regulation.
Over the summer, many companies have grabbed even more personal data to train their generative AI models, at users’ and society’s expense. Each company’s actions deserve separate posts, so let me focus on Snap Inc here, which often doesn’t get the critical focus they deserve.

🛑 We have sent a letter to Meta Ireland / Facebook Norway today, demanding them to stop their planned roll-out of training their AI models on users' (and non-users data), arguing they are in breach of the GDPR, consumer law and the digital markets act.
Our press release is in Norwegian, but the letter in English.

🤩Love when people get praise they deserve. @npub1fdr…lvhs praise his work at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau fighting data brokers, forcing transparency in the finance sector and much more.
💪Already at the FTC he was having impact using the levers available to make change. Always a friend of the Transatlantic Consumer Dialogue (TACD), where I have have overseen the digital work in my role as EU co-chair.
