So 10 days ago (last Sunday) I had a bizarre accident going down a slope after a peak. I've created an accurate simulation for visual aid. Everything happened quickly and yet in slow motion. I stepped on a 90ish pound rock the size of a small end table and it rolled over with me pinning my foot then bowling me down. I intentionally fell sideways to minimize how much of me it rolled over. I also tucked my arms in and sort of balled my core so it would keep rolling off me. Really spooked me, foot swelled quickly. I tightened my boot, limped 1.5 miles down to trail then the remaining 5.5 miles to the trailhead. I startled a couple while dirt napping in the dark at a trail junction. I insisted I was fine but accepted a pile of Ibuprofen. Been r.i.c.e'ing and the swelling and pain is down but xray shows inconclusive bone fracture so the doc wants me staying off my feet till he sees me Monday. He's being cautious. Doesn't feel any more than a rolled ankle, but we'll see.

1/2 Inspired by the Ocelot windscreen design, specifically the mini for the brs3000t stove and 95mm cups, I thought I'd try to make one with steel wire and heavy aluminum foil. Seems about right. I'll have to try it next trip.

5/ picnic at 13,000 feet on Trail Crest, buried John Muir Trail junction sign (can you see it?), as far as I got along the crest by Mt Muir where the boot pack ended (can you see the summit hut up ahead?), and another picnic up on the back slope after turning around.
Boot pack ended and people were climbing over Mt Muir's shoulder to continue. Looked tedious. I'd already had my climbing fun on the chute so I turned around there happy to be able to hike back down in sunlight.

4/ Views at the top of the chute above TrailCrest. Chute climb was fun, mostly firm crust. Went straight up in alpine snowshoes with integrated crampon and heal lift (almost cheating really). Softer near the top but nice switchback foot pack shelves for the last few hundred feet. Bluebird conditions, dead silent with no wind.

3/ didn't pull the phone out much moving with snowshoes and trekking poles but something up past Trail camp in the bowl below the chute caught my eye. From far away I swore it was a person but it was just some sticks marking what I thought were dugout bivy sites. However after seeing the recent news stories about the missing hiker search, it's possible this was a search site and excavations. They weren't tent shaped, or arranged like a camp, and no other signs of camping. @npub1ucv…5a8g

7/ admittedly, did stay in the hut. It's a gray area. I mostly avoid it and don't share on popular social media. It exists for a reason, but it's not an official camp site. I prefer open air anyway and have rodent dropping / hanta virus concerns in these huts. Didn't feel like waiting for the evening breeze to pass though and it is a stone building. I want to say 7th night on this summit, but I'm losing track.

6/ Went down Old Army pass on the way down. Already troublesome snow drifted and frozen over the trail on the washed out spots. Some footprints but mostly had to kick in new steps. oh for sure. I didn't think it would be dangerous but you never know. Expected to use them for helpful traction but the path was packed just right, not loose and not ice. I wear my helmet when I get up into mixed snow and rock, but more for comfort than necessity. Same for ice axe. I pull it out when it's high and steep but mostly because I enjoy holding it, tapping everything, and using it like a cane to step up big rocks.

brought crampons but didn't use them. Snow underfoot was scrunchy and grippy, the boot pack on trail was trenched, and the rest of the snow on slopes was soft powder with no base beneath so there was no real fall risk. Wore boots with a good hard heel and that was fine. Tall gaiters kept the snow off.

2/ first significant snow storm Tuesday stopped all Mt Whitney hikers until some fool broke trail to the summit Friday (and had to get air lifted out from frostbite). Had a look yesterday, went overnight for best snow. Started 10pm Saturday and summited 6am. Waited for 7am sunrise, saw the first people an hour later while descending.

5/ The psychology of popular places like Mt Whitney is interesting. I forget many people are doing a once in a lifetime thing and maybe get a couple hikes a year. When I stop and chat anything can happen so I've learned to small talk and shield my psyche.
Often it's tired day hikers descending on their 18th hour in a mood. Could be people breaking down emotionally because they can't continue up. Or angry people coming down who quit. Or sour people on their way up who missed sunrise. + the group dynamic version of all those. People can get riled up because they've invested a lot in an expectation.
Most are open and excited as I am, but people in a state will drop landmines into your consciousness. It's dangerous in a place where your mindset may be the most important gear you brought to accomplish and enjoy your day.
This day was the night storm. Everyone descending had quit and tried to convince me the weather up there was terrible and I wasn't prepared (tho it had already cleared). Nod and say thanks!

4/ I've done this a lot so I have a lot of data to compare. Interesting how low I've brought the effort. I basically apply LSD/Maffetone method to alpine speed hiking. Repeated, long, slow distance at low effort and my overall ability increases without ever trying harder (the opposite really). I'm quite sure I could hike this route with just the clothes on my back now. I consumed 1 liter of water, 1 small bag of chips, and 1 protein bar. Not my fastest, but my easiest for overall time.

I've been good there so far by managing layers and only using it in temps below freezing. That's the trick though, not overheating within the vbl. I've been wearing the same as I always do and just using the summer quilt + vbl in temps where I would have brought the winter quilt and it's balanced out well. I was warmer this time at 28 F than on Whitney a couple weeks back at 19 F though, so I opened the collar a couple times to regulate the temp a bit.

7/ Short lollipop, but a fair amount of gain at decent elevation. Trail gets up to 11,500 at Meysan lake pretty quickly then Mallory was around 13,800 and Irvine around 13,700 for the night. Went under freezing to 28 F but I've been experimenting with extending my 30 F summer quilt with a vapor barrier liner and staying toasty warm. It was 10 degrees F warmer than Whitney a couple weeks back anyway with the same setup so I wasn't concerned.

2/ Left the trailhead at 6:30 pm and got to the top at 1:30 am. I can't believe I've done that in only 5 hours before. In the clouds and starting to snow so I hunkered down in the hut to wait for morning and people to show up.

1/ Up Whitney last night. Some evening and night pics. Lone Pine peak getting a spotlight on the drive in. Moon rising through Garnet fire smoke that drifted east over the Inyos. Someone down at Consultation lake getting water and lighting up the lake with their headlamp. The moon through the clouds from up by one of the windows.

Funny. This honey bottle is my favorite hiking water bottle the past couple of years. It’s light, has a wide mouth, has bonus ml over a 500 at 675, and the shape fits well in a pack side pocket. I pair it with an old 725 ml smart water bottle. A couple running flasks up front gives me a liter, then the bottles a liter++ in reserve.
I wanted to normalize things and get 2 500 ml Nalgene HDPE bottles, but for half the price I could just get another honey bottle and it comes full of honey 🍯

4/ It was so nice on the saddle around from Glacier Spike that I stopped for the day, set up camp, and enjoyed wandering around the ridge watching the clouds. This is just a nice spot, fun looking down to Glen pass and watching little dots going over it.

3/ the south side of Glen pass looks so steep and insurmountable while you approach. I went up then off trail up the east ridge to Glacier Spike. Got pretty far but encountered obstacles so I down climbed back to this chute, went down, then walked up the choss to the saddle and ridge above. I could see the route for me would be from the top. Decided to save it for another day because it’s a nice spot and I want to return. I stayed the rest of the day up there then bivied for the night.

2/ packer on his way up Glen pass to restock some people arriving at Rae lakes. I had to stop for water but I wish I could have followed them up the pass. They were moving so well over the terrain, I wanted to watch them go up the steep bit. I bumped into this guy last year down by Vidette meadow, he's the real deal.

1/ Quick overnight around Kearsarge and Glen passes. Some pics over Kearsarge on the high trail. Bullfrog lake glowing with East Vidette rising behind it. I look at East Vidette different now after overnighting on the summit. Kearsarge Pinnacles showing off in the mid morning light. I love this giant slab along the pinnacles. It's like one of them got sliced off. It's enormous and fantastic.

2/ rewind a little, I saw snow forecast for the Southern Sierra so I went to have a look at Mt Whitney. Night hiked for sunrise, waited out lower elevation evening rain and started at midnight. Passed the last people on the switchbacks around 3:30 am and enjoyed tracking the first footsteps in the snow for the last 3 miles to the summit. What a change from the 'heatwave' down in LA county!

not really. Requires a lot of gear and I like to take advantage of the cooler temps in the desert mountains closer to home in the winter. It would be nice though, ski touring would be the way.

3/ left Precipice lake after lunch, ran back down to Hamilton lake, and an hour later I was swimming. That felt great, dried off and got a private bivy spot on the rocks off the water before other hikers started showing up. Chatted with some people, most were looping from Mineral King or heading to Whitney on HST.

2/ left Eagle Scout peak at noon and was back down over Kaweah gap to Precipice lake again by 2 pm. Precipice lake looked significantly different Monday then it had when I'd passed Saturday in the fog. Nice to see all the way up the face to the diving board summit block on top of Eagle Scout where I had just been.

4/ day two (Sunday) ended watching clouds forming and dissipating around Eagle Scout Peak. It kept taking center stage with clouds wrapped around it, then they completely cleared at sunset. I love the look of this mountain, it frames Kaweah gap with Mt Stewart. The dramatic diving board summit block jutting out on top stands out and you see it everywhere from both sides of the gap.

2/ spent the rest of the day wandering up and around to all the lakes up each step into each cirque. I counted more like 10. Really nice behind Black Kaweah, look forward to returning there. I've been through the 9 lakes basin before but never took the time to visit all the lakes so it was cool to check them out leisurely.

1/ Day two was a lazy day, not going to lie. Opened the tarp flaps and napped late on top of the sleeping bag until the sun broke over the mountains. Had thoughts on some peaks but switched to cruising overland to chill at all the lakes and every pretty meadow and stream. A lot of slow distance over talus and boulder fields but beautiful spots and saw no one all day.
