Last Notes npub1es429n63v8kjs0vvvyfpj22x6ulhtvlh6fve97ulh4nnteepzjrq2x05ar Naomi P Today on fedi, I learned about the existence of biscornu pincushions. So I went and looked them up. I was utterly delighted that the Wikipedia article not only discusses how the pincushions are made, but how it’s described mathematically: > Mathematically, two squares joined together in the pattern of a biscornu will form the boundary of a unique convex polyhedron, by Alexandrov's uniqueness theorem.[4][7] In the case of a biscornu, this polyhedron is a flattened square antiprism, with ten faces <snip> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biscornu npub1es429n63v8kjs0vvvyfpj22x6ulhtvlh6fve97ulh4nnteepzjrq2x05ar Naomi P Good morning! My brain produced a speech error this morning that amused me: “applicated” instead of “applied”. (It was a back-formation from “application”.) It’s probably not because of tea deficiency, but I’m going to make more anyway. 🫖 npub1es429n63v8kjs0vvvyfpj22x6ulhtvlh6fve97ulh4nnteepzjrq2x05ar Naomi P We have an insulated grocery bag that has burlap for the outside and no reinforcement on the bottom corners. They all have holes from wear now. My suspicion is planned obsolescence. (I have the impression that burlap doesn’t hold up to friction.) Anyway, I went to the creative reuse shop and picked up some leather scraps. I decided this was a situation where finished is better than perfect and did a test run on one corner. I cut an L-shaped piece of leather and sewed two edges to make it into a box corner, then sewed that to the bag. (I punched holes with an awl before stitching.) #mending #repair https://media.mastodon.sunny.garden/media_attachments/files/117/078/689/328/003/573/original/5d1dd7b8da61c4cf.jpeg https://media.mastodon.sunny.garden/media_attachments/files/117/078/689/429/162/703/original/6e96d2bf3fd30367.jpeg npub1es429n63v8kjs0vvvyfpj22x6ulhtvlh6fve97ulh4nnteepzjrq2x05ar Naomi P I went to the local creative reuse shop, and saw this snowberry clearwing moth just sitting on a wall. I’m more used to seeing them looking like hummingbirds or bees sipping from flowers. https://media.mastodon.sunny.garden/media_attachments/files/117/021/942/146/336/254/original/2c607710a06df28e.jpeg npub1es429n63v8kjs0vvvyfpj22x6ulhtvlh6fve97ulh4nnteepzjrq2x05ar Naomi P For fiber artists, a list of signs that a set of instructions is probably llm-slop. I like it a lot. I looked carefully at the reviews to pick the one I bought: https://ottlite.com/products/lighted-magnifier-clip-lamp It cost a lot less bought elsewhere. I already had a magnifier meant for wearing on my head, but I found it awkward to use. I hope you find something that works for you! npub1es429n63v8kjs0vvvyfpj22x6ulhtvlh6fve97ulh4nnteepzjrq2x05ar Naomi P Good morning! Discussing clothing terminology with spouse because of the garment I’m making, and I said that some English language clothing words are half interesting, half confusing, half frustrating, and half amusing. I give you the following terms that I know with multiple meanings: garter, suspenders, vest, pants, dungarees, overalls, jumper, breeches/britches, snoods. Right. Time to get ready to go buy some pocket fabric for my “pinafore-like tunic”, as the pattern company calls it. In my dialect it’s probably a jumper. Maybe. I think they didn’t know what word would describe it with the least confusion, either. I need more tea for this. 🫖 npub1es429n63v8kjs0vvvyfpj22x6ulhtvlh6fve97ulh4nnteepzjrq2x05ar Naomi P Recently I was considering the words braid and plait, which are synonyms in modern English. I started to wonder if they had the same etymological roots, in large part because of the ways that sounds change over time or when words are borrowed from other languages. p and b can be swapped (they’re almost the same consonant); r and l likewise; and also d and t. Vowels are just plain mushy. (In the version of English that I speak, plait and braid have different vowels despite the spelling.) However, when I looked up the etymology in a couple of my usual sources, it turns out they don’t even share a Proto-Indo-European (PIE) root! So they’re false cognates. Plait comes from the same Latin root as ply (as in yarns twisted together). The PIE root means (drumroll please) “plait”. Braid comes from Old English. There seems to be argument which PIE root it came from, but it took on a meaning of quick movement in Proto-Germanic, and the Old English word bregdan meant a bunch of things. Modern English kept the plait meaning, while Scots kept the quick movement version. (I know very little about Scots, only enough to say that the Scottish version of English changed in different ways to get there. Scotland has Scottish Gaelic, Scottish English, and Scots. If I try to explain them, I’ll get it wrong. See link below.) Links: Scots: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scots_language Braid: https://www.etymonline.com/search?q=braid Plait: https://www.etymonline.com/search?q=plait npub1es429n63v8kjs0vvvyfpj22x6ulhtvlh6fve97ulh4nnteepzjrq2x05ar Naomi P I looked out the kitchen window today and saw a hummingbird visiting the coral honeysuckle in the side yard. I told spouse, and we watched together as our feathered neighbor visited multiple flowers and then sat in the vines, looking rather like a leaf. After a moment, the bird flitted closer to the window and landed on a dead twig facing us. They proceeded to preen, scratch an itch, stick their loooong tongue out, and then settle and sit for a while. Our kid came into the kitchen and joined us in regarding the neighborly borb. We speculated that they were people-watching. And then! Another hummingbird appeared! There was territorial swooping back and forth, and both birds left the scene. npub1es429n63v8kjs0vvvyfpj22x6ulhtvlh6fve97ulh4nnteepzjrq2x05ar Naomi P @nprofile…w4ya I’ve really liked other books by Pat Murphy. The problem I have with this is that *one time* I wasn’t focused and heard “by heckity”. Now I’m stuck with it, by heckity. npub1es429n63v8kjs0vvvyfpj22x6ulhtvlh6fve97ulh4nnteepzjrq2x05ar Naomi P My cross stitch teacher showed me how to wind floss onto paper floss bobbins (including writing the color number on the end). I was tidying up my cotton floss, and thought I needed to buy more fancy pieces of cardboard. Then I said, nah, I’ll cut out some hourglass shaped pieces of cardboard that’ll fit in my storage boxes. #embroidery #MakingDo https://media.mastodon.sunny.garden/media_attachments/files/116/874/756/152/059/871/original/3531dd5930f2e15b.jpeg https://media.mastodon.sunny.garden/media_attachments/files/116/874/756/233/495/406/original/4467a8fc63e231b7.jpeg npub1es429n63v8kjs0vvvyfpj22x6ulhtvlh6fve97ulh4nnteepzjrq2x05ar Naomi P I used to have an embroidery manual I really liked, but I wasn’t using it. I gave it away several years ago to a teenager I knew who was doing wonderfully creative work. I’ve been regretting it lately, but I couldn’t remember the author or title. Today I realized that amazing older craft books end up on people’s recommendation lists, managed to track it down after only a little searching, and ordered a used copy. I’m pleased! Because I know someone will ask, it’s _The Stitches of Creative Embroidery_, by Jacqueline Enthoven. Anyway, such a cutie! An honor to be descended from them! npub1es429n63v8kjs0vvvyfpj22x6ulhtvlh6fve97ulh4nnteepzjrq2x05ar Naomi P I’ve been hoping to buy a denim shirt at a thrift shop for a while. Every time I’ve spotted one, it’s turned out to have corporate branding embroidered above the pocket. Yuck. I finally realized I could do something about it, and bought one. It’s clearly not the same as the German fingerhut (finger hat), and I guessed that it’s something to do with the thumb. So it is. It’s “thumb” plus an instrumental suffix, “-el”, which is added to a root to make a tool name. Just FYI. https://www.susannawinter.net/post/how-to-knit-centered-median-increase #knitting #FiberArts npub1es429n63v8kjs0vvvyfpj22x6ulhtvlh6fve97ulh4nnteepzjrq2x05ar Naomi P We have been taking late afternoon walks in the park recently. The red shouldered hawks are definitely nesting in the same tree as the last two years. This pleases us because it’s basically in full view from a sidewalk even when the tree is leafed out. We’ve seen an adult sitting in the nest a couple of times and seen them mating. Today one of them landed on a tree branch carrying a snake and started calling. The other flew in and was provided with dinner. Spring is here! npub1es429n63v8kjs0vvvyfpj22x6ulhtvlh6fve97ulh4nnteepzjrq2x05ar Naomi P This was shared with my craft group. I just double-checked the date on Reddit, and it dates from March 20, 2025. I hope we can find the knitter! Today, I wish us all something that goes better than expected. Fortifying myself with tea right now. 🫖 npub1es429n63v8kjs0vvvyfpj22x6ulhtvlh6fve97ulh4nnteepzjrq2x05ar Naomi P Good morning! I’m taking care of an extra cat for a couple of weeks, which means extra cat snuggles because Oliver is a big sweetie. It also means going out twice a day, but so it goes. (Cat tax below) Right. I need some more tea, and then it’s back to work for me. 🫖 https://media.mastodon.sunny.garden/media_attachments/files/114/003/104/449/527/201/original/bafc22b7c79200e3.jpeg npub1es429n63v8kjs0vvvyfpj22x6ulhtvlh6fve97ulh4nnteepzjrq2x05ar Naomi P Seeing the blue confetti of Veronica persica in the yard always makes me smile. #BloomScrolling #GannetJoy https://media.mastodon.sunny.garden/media_attachments/files/113/970/929/852/463/797/original/8551c6c8a8552585.jpeg npub1es429n63v8kjs0vvvyfpj22x6ulhtvlh6fve97ulh4nnteepzjrq2x05ar Naomi P Awhile ago, I wrote up a mega thread with lots of links about mending textiles. I’ve compressed and reorganized it as a very old school webpage on neocities in hopes of making it a bit easier to use: When Textiles Go Bad: https://gannet.neocities.org/MendingTextiles #FiberArts #mending
