did anything really unexpected jump out at you from Bowie? Stuff not part of the normal discourse?
I think of Joni as somewhere between Tolstoy and Stendhal and that's just what she did up through about Blue - went deeper and more honestly than anyone before, by far - and then the shift between there and Court & Spark elevates to a level I could only relate to maybe Miles and Trane, geniuses who produced masterworks in multiple successive and equally groundbreaking styles.

ah, watching on Dead Ahead Halloween 80 the Beam is more meaningful than it is in the audio only. OK cool. That fully counts as a real thing.

thanks - I haven't heard it earlier in 1981, and we're working on this survey of drums & space from that era, so I'm curious how it came and went. As I recall it took awhile to become part of the touring rig

the very simple and obvious distinction is between a system that indexes information on external sites and refers users to it and one that internalizes that content (without consent of or compensation to the originating parties), synthesizes an abstraction from it (often poorly) and doesn't refer to the original external source. Any positive gains are trivial and the negatives are immense and varied. But this is far from an incremental change, it's a categorical shift.
