If your #TheoryOfChange doesn't include a #TheoryOfPower and its ruthless application against us, whatever #activism you might be engaged in will inevitably crash upon the rocks of our shared reality

The rulers own the #corporations, who in turn own the government. The government then makes things easier for corporations and harder for you.
That's why when their #DataCentres leech away all the water and electricity, the cost gets passed on to you, in the middle of a #CostOfLiving crisis.
That's why when individuals go above a threshold they're hit with an effective 50% tax rate on income, but corporations deduct expenses and pay only 12.5% tax on the remainder, plus they get to hide their stolen wealth from the rest of the world. And many other governments don't fight or even protest this, because they're owned by the same corporations.
Did you vote for any of this? No, of course you didn't. Your rulers decreed it would be so, and you weren't even given a chance to vote against it

There's a longstanding #HousingCrisis in #Ireland, and they built #DataCentres in the very same defunded communities where they refused to build housing, because there's always plenty of steel for equipment racks. Just like there's always plenty of land for golf courses.
Not for you, tho. Never for you.

You are not your #RulingClass!
Wherever you are in the world, a whole world separates you from the rulers. You could vote every time like your life depends on it, and your voting will never be able to stop things getting actively worse for you. Because you don't own your #government.
The rulers don't even need to vote, and governments bend over backwards to grease the wheels for them, because they do own your government.
You will find yourself structurally prohibited from changing that relationship while working within the system, and violently prevented from doing so outside the system

so at the end of the day, you believe that there should be a group of people armed and empowered to capture and subjugate and imprison whomsoever our rulers deem imprisonable? Because if that's not what you believe in then what you need is abolition.
Those rulers will always be incentivized to invent new excuses for deeming their political rivals imprisonable (like Nixon did when he started the drug war that's lasted over half a century now), thus entrenching their rule over you.
If all you disagree with is their methods, well, why should they care what you think? You've already accepted rule by force, and it's the rulers who get to decide the methods of those enforcing that rule - which coincidentally will always be whatever the rulers think is just shy of inspiring mass armed resistance - without regard to you.

the state subverts all efforts to reform its operations into new funding sources for even worse operations along the same lines as before. And the very existence of reform efforts is used as a calming measure to divert energy away from abolition where it belongs. What we are seeing in policing today is the OUTCOME of decades if not centuries of reform efforts being twisted back against the very activists who called for it.
We must #AbolishPolice and #AbolishPrisons - they make us less safe than we would be in their absence.

sounds like you're saying "yes, there is some merit to the argument that the baby-protection-machine is actually just a big hopper strapped to a meat grinder and actually kills babies rather than protecting them... however one might want to hold the machine to its purported aims" - nah man, people have been falling for that for literal centuries with outcomes only ever getting worse, you have to completely dismantle it and start fresh with an entirely new approach

policing is fundamentally not "a service that is meant to serve communities" - if it were, it wouldn't be allowed to keep operating in flagrant contradiction of that goal with impunity.
Policing is a service to the ruling class, that is meant to keep the ruled in their place. None of what they are allowed to get away with is inconsistent with that goal. "Rule of law" is just a propaganda term for "rule by the ruling class." Police are full of abusers because abuse is the whole point

Since I tooted this, #itchio predictably caved, and they went even worse than steam. We seriously need a #fedi approach to payment processing, and no I don't mean "a company with that in the name" or "yet another cryptocurrency scam" or any of that. I mean that buyers and sellers both register with a set of intermediaries (individuals or orgs) they have reason to trust, and those intermediaries establish a path between them to enable the money to flow for any given transaction.
These networks have existed offline for at least hundreds of years, but have been memory holed and/or regulated out of existence. We need to relearn this shit

Like, at some point people realised that we could just tack on Diffie-Hellman onto all the protocols, and for sure we're not all the way safe from surveillance but a whole lot better than we'd be without it, and now that's everywhere.
#Fedi is how we build communities at least partway free from corporate control, and corps are the ones killing all of us, so let's start building that into everything now please

2025-07-20 15:36:21 GMT

Can we please have something like #etsy but #fedi? Can we have something like #steam or #itchio but fedi? So we're not at the mercy of one company who's at the mercy of a couple of payment processors who can and will erase whole bunches of us at will, and instead we can collectively shun and defederate anyone selling Nazi shit. What will it take to make this happen?

so it doesn't matter what party is in power in Israel, as the whole populace is ok with what they're doing? Meanwhile it doesn't matter what party is in power in the US, as neither party cares what the populace thinks and there's no mechanism for any "will of the people" to intrude upon the will of the rulers

with fascist billionaires running so much of the world, any who don't fall in line with the fascists will be labeled as criminals sooner or later. Taking that "criminal" label at face value is doing their work for them.
Hell yeah I want to "evade authorities" even before they label me a criminal - they've repeatedly demonstrated a fervent desire to disappear and torture and kill millions of us, and have a long track record of being very effective at that

efficiency is a bad measure for public services. Efficiency is inherently extractive, using it as a measure leads to an obsession with reducing costs despite needs. Effectiveness is probably the measure you're looking for

gendering the adjectives was a power play to begin with. There's no good reason why the way we talk to or about a person should change so much based on either their gender (most colonizer languages) or your gender (Thai, for one) in the first place

on a pepper plant, the flowers dry up and where they were, a seed-containing pepper grows, and that's the part you eat. On a weed plant, the flower buds dry up and seed-containing (if pollinated) colas form, and that's the part you smoke. Seems pretty clear cut to me

because capitalists benefit (to worker detriment) by being able to shop around for cheap labor among captive populations, whereas workers benefit from being able to shop around different labor markets. That's the real purpose of borders right there

sure, sorry for the delay, it's hard to tie recent policies to Harris bc the Biden admin sidelined her so much, but here are 2 examples of party-wide synergy and one older one from Harris herself:
The Dems' recent border bill, that they pushed hard for, included all the openly fascist policies Repubs asked for, and would've doubled ICE budget. Harris recently promised to fight for "strong border security" including resurrecting this bill:
https://www.thenation.com/article/politics/democrats-border-bill-wrong/
While Dems talk about supporting unions, and this admin talks about rail, their real loyalty is to the rail operators not the workers (just like with Repubs and coal), as evidenced by them breaking an imminent strike over safety issues; within a year we had numerous derailment disasters that permanently poisoned communities:
https://www.leftvoice.org/the-congressional-vote-to-crush-the-rail-strike-shows-that-we-need-a-party-of-our-own/
Harris as AG fought with SCOTUS over multiple years to keep people incarcerated so the state could exploit their labor:
https://prospect.org/justice/how-kamala-harris-fought-to-keep-nonviolent-prisoners-locked-up/
This is not an "unfathomably vast" difference in policy between Ds and Rs, this is the parties competing with each other to see who can screw us over faster

wow, do normie Dems _really_ believe that the policy differences between Ds & Rs are "unfathomably vast"?
If that's so, no wonder the Harris campaign isn't providing any details whatsoever. Because revealing what they actually stand for would thoroughly disabuse the electorate of that wild notion jfc

when an individual steals from an individual, that's plagiarism; when an individual steals (or reclaims their own work) from a company, that's a copyright violation; when a company steals from an individual, good luck having any recourse to law

reformed? Abolished more like.
The only purpose of copyright as a legal concept is to turn activities previously labeled "plagiarism" into blameless lawful activities when carried out by a company.
"Work for hire" laws mean that anything you write is by default owned and copyrighted by your employer, and they pay you at most once for it. And as soon as a company asserts copyright of your work, they can remix/resell your work and use it to extract perpetual profit without giving anything back to you, not even attribution is required. It's inherently asymmetric because the whole purpose is extraction

If you ever need to teach a kid about #microplastic contamination, just open up a jar of #glitter one time for whatever reason. For weeks you'll be finding glitter on the table, in your hair, on any sticky surface. Point to it whenever you see it, and tell them that this stuff'll be all over the house for months, and will then persist in the environment for centuries
