@nprofile…hm63 yeah I tried varifocals before I got reading glasses and I hated the restricted field of view. Luckily they had a return policy and I got reading glasses instead. My eyesight is “ok” for both reading and monitor short term, but not great because 1 eye is doing all the work- my left eye for reading, my right eye for monitors. They’re both rubbish at distance though which is why I’ve had distance glasses for years

A couple of weeks with my monitor-distance glasses and yeah it does definitely help smooth out the days when my eyes are tired. I sometimes forget to put them on for an hour if I’m having a good day but even so I notice my eyes relaxing when I put them on. The only downside is that when I take them off again, my vanilla eyesight is suddenly *terrible* at that range. They’re not strong glasses but it’s just enough that my eyes are clearly like”WTF, we have to work now?” 🤓

I have a huge backlog of games anyway and my Switch 1 was only used for 1st party games, since I can play all the others on my PC for cheaper and I don't game on the go. I expect to pick up the Gen 2 whenever that happens and there's a better library

Well, after being fine for a few weeks, Merry’s stomach bug came back yesterday 🙁 However because we’ve had him on such a restricted diet, and after talking to the vet about it today, we think we’ve identified what it is: chicken! We’ve been avoiding giving him treats but he had a couple of bits of our cooked chicken in the last few days, which he hasn’t had for a while. Even when I've driven automatics in Canada it had the shifter in the central column. I always associated the steering column shifter with those American cars with just one long sofa seat in the front instead of individual seats. I've never been in one of those

@nprofile…29up It's true, a lot of people used "UE5" as a marketing opportunity because Lumen and Nanite were extremely hyped. But that's backfired as reality has set in that although impressive, these features are absolutely not free. Even Nanite, which although very scalable, raises the minimum VRAM floor so if you don't need it (like us, we're top-down, LOD isn't an issue) it pays to turn it off

@nprofile…29up the daft thing is that people just assume that if you use UE5 then you must be hugely increasing the minimum tech specs, but you can totally run UE5 with mostly the UE4 feature set, it just gives you better tooling and a better TAA. We do this and turn off Lumen, Nanite, VSMs and it runs on much lower hardware.
However it doesn't make sense for them to upgrade if they've already done a lot of engine customisations.

I yolo’d and wiped the old MacBook Pro (late 2013) and installed Linux Mint. Works pretty well out of the box, barring needing a wired Ethernet adapter to install the WiFi driver (which I already owned).
I’m sure I’ll configure it more but I have a few niggles. I can’t get the trackpad feeling right. Even at highest speed it’s barely sensitive enough for me, and acceleration just makes it feel too slow for small movements

Had to buy a new USB flash drive for the first time in forever because I had 2 die on me. I hardly ever use them, only for OS installs really. One of them was still working for my TrueNAS install a few weeks ago but Windows reported it dead; my old Mac thought it worked but after flashing a Linux Mint ISO to it, it then started reporting it dead as well. I suppose they are pretty old: 8GB drives from probably over 15 years ago? Linux on Mac install will have to wait for that to arrive

I’ve realised that I probably never liked the technology industry. What I liked was personal computing, in all its facets - creativity, scratching your own itches, sharing and collaborating on a small scale.

I've just deleted the concept of stamina from Minermancers. We originally had stamina so that the player could have a sprinting speed faster than enemies, but you couldn't just run away forever. However in practice, sprinting is self-limiting because of cave geometry and obstacles, and the fact you can't do anything useful while sprinting (mining, casting spells). It's less annoying and cheaper on the attribute system just to remove it, and I know some people hate stamina mechanics

- Complexity in licensing puts off the little guys we actually want to share with
- The people who contribute well will do so without being forced
- Enforcing licenses as a small developer is hell *even when* someone else covers the legal bills (and most people don't get that)
- Bad actors gonna be bad regardless

I made a Tiramisu for tomorrow (it’s best left for 24h) and I’ve always been warned in recipes about over-whipping the marscapone, but after doing this a few times I’d say under-whipping is worse. Many recipes tell you mix until just combined but IME that can end up too thin, at least with marscapone I can get. Whipping it a while longer makes it firm up again which is what you want: no-one wants runny Tiramisu.

@nprofile…76gq @nprofile…aels This is one area UE gets mostly right I think; in that ActorComponents are a single-level collection of components for the actor, but can’t be nested, while SceneComponents have transforms and can therefore be nested if you want. So ActorComponents tend to be data & behaviour while SceneComponents can be a wider range of other ancillary things like meshes, colliders, particle effects etc

At least most junior devs will eventually see through all that “best practice” stuff they copied from Stack Overflow & realise making everything over-complicated based on some inherited idea of “good” that takes no account of the specific problem at hand is dumb. I’ve learned over the years to do very little in Blueprints though. Just the very high level stuff, configuration, UI, animation blueprints. Any serious code stays in C++ because Blueprints are terrible to refactor. Far too prone to losing connections that you miss (that don’t get flagged like they would by a C++ compiler)

UE5 hype is all about Nanite and Lumen, but hands down the most game changing thing for us over UE4 has been the enhancements to the in-editor animation suite (control rig, sequencer etc).
We never animate outside UE now. It means that any assets we buy, we can create control rigs for them and create all the extra animations we inevitably need without having to do an error-prone export & reimport process via Blender. It’s great (and Marie swears at Control Rig much less every version)

No eye candy to share today, I’ve been doing a bunch of bug fixing as I usually do between feature chunks. I spent a fair amount of time re-learning how SUSS works (my open source UE Utility agent plugin - can’t say AI anymore). It’s actually pretty clever! Well done past Steve. But it definitely needs a tooling pass sometime because it’s ugly af. But the visual logger output of what it’s thinking is very useful. Today I improved the GAS integration since I’ve learned a lot in the last year

I've replaced my pre-canned spell charge-up sound with a metasound which takes charge up and overcharge times and automatically does a pitch ramp-up over those times. This is much better because all I could do before is change the speed of the pre-canned ramp-up to try to match varying timings, this is much more accurate a match
