@nprofile…5ds9 I don't understand, though. Why should it not be encouraged? Why should there be an extra charge? The marginal cost of adding an extra train car or even an extra train is likely not exhorbitant and carries additional benefits.
Furthermore, I doubt there will ever really be *that many people* who want to bother with taking a bicycle on a train.

@nprofile…hu37 "Starship Troopers", by Robert Heinlein. Very possibly the most important book on moral theory of the 20th Century.
Heinlein's "scientific theory of morality" describes the idea that the basis of all morality is the self-preservation instinct, and that all higher forms of morality are defined by the willingness to forgo self-interest in favor of the well-being of larger social groups to which the individual may belong: family, community, nation, humanity, all life itself.

I saw a YouTube video in which the presenter was talking about the idea of a $100 USD "pen for life" (including ink refills). He chose a Right Choice $50 titanium body retractable rollerball and rollerball refills. He claims refills (Pilot G2 or Pentel Energel) cost about $1 each and last him about a year each.
I use a $35 TWSBI ECO #fountainpen and Mrs. Stewart's Concentrated Liquid Bluing, $4 for 8 oz (237 mL). Pelikan 4001 is available in 1000 mL bottles (blue or black, at least) for $30.

@nprofile…la7y This isn't about legality. It's about profit. I am confident that if we ever get a chance to investigate all of this, we're going to find out that the government's police forces have contracts with data brokers that reward them by the piece for how many devices they scan, image, and upload.

Not that there isn’t good produce in Vermont, but as a Southeast Asian American person, most of what I prefer to eat doesn’t grow, or doesn’t grow well, in this climate. Well, at least, not *yet*. Ultimately, my feeling about #DnD is that it's more or less the lingua franca. If I had a choice of any #TTRPG to play, D&D would not be my personal choice; however, because it's what most people know, it's easy to fall into a game.
I think #DnD5E24 is a victim of the success of #DnD5E14. It has tried to be all things to all players inside a system that has "good bones" (compared with previous editions), but in the process of productization by Hasbro, has become too codified and too complex.

I want something like a Soma Buena Vista mixte. I wear mostly skirts and dresses.

I have always maintained that the legitimacy of any state extends only insofar as that state protects the rights of those it claims the authority to govern and those whom it claims to be under the jurisdiction of its laws.
No state has a "right to exist". No state *can* have any such right, because no state has any claim to *rights*, in the first place. Rights inhere in and belong only to the individual, solely by virtue of their existence.
States have powers, not rights.

It should be obvious, but there are really only four outcomes possible for #Israel and #Palestine.
1. The Palestinians are eliminated from the land.
2. The Israelis are eliminated from the land.
3. The "two state solution", in which the Palestinians and Israelis each get exclusive rights to a portion of land.
4. A constitutional democratic republic is formed that guarantees the equal rights of all.
Only one of these options is truly viable in the long term.

I called my new format チビ "chibi". I very quickly realized that while it did solve the #design problems, the practical problems would have required more investment than I could afford to have custom ring metals manufactured, so I decided to stick with #Filofax Personal.
At some point, I designed 7 mm 方眼紙 (hōganshi) quadrille paper, since that's a better size for writing in kanji.
Tonight, I wondered what it would look like to make Personal size diaries using 12 pt and 7 mm rulings/grids.

2025-05-31 01:42:47 GMT

Oops. #RabbitHole. #兎の穴
In 2018, I decided to #design a new #PersonalOrganizer format, in the hopes of slightly reducing the size from a typical Personal (95 mm x 171 mm). I have long used a 5 mm ruling standard for my #Filofax, so for the new format, I used a 12 pt ruling (~4.233 mm), the smallest I think is practical for Latin scripts.
Taking into account the size of US currency and checks, I settled on a page size of 237 pt x 438 pt, or about 83.6 mm x 154.5 mm.

@nprofile…t430 Working for the Trump Administration is the only job where you can fuck up this colossally and make your boss look like a complete chump, and not only completely get away with it, but have a multibillion dollar spin machine defend you. It's like watching the worst kind of performance art.

#Tesla is a perfect example of what happens when you get people who think they know #technology and #engineering but don't really care about public #safety and don't know anything about building cars safely and responsibly to build cars and sell them to people with too much money and too little intelligence and wisdom.
There is a very good reason why large #corporations tend to be very conservative. It's a learned response to having made mistakes with people's lives.

I don't want to have too many #fountainpens, but it was always in my plans to get a Black TWSBI ECO for my black ink, and repurpose the Clear ECO that is now filled with it. The Clear one will get filled with J. Herbin Violette Pensée, which I've not used in some time.
Other than that, I want (not need, just want because pretty) two Leonardo Momento Zero Grandes with steel nibs as my daily writers.

Rewatching "The Crown" on Netflix, and I was bemused to see this #anachronism: John Lithgow as Prime Minister Winston Churchill, writing with what is clearly a modern Pelikan M200 #FountainPen. While Pelikan pens certainly did exist in 1952, they didn't look anything like that. The M200 is a currently produced model. But, I also wonder if a German pen was something that Mr. Churchill would ever have used, especially only 7 years after the end of the war.

The problem with #digital #technology is that it is literally #information #processing, and #privacy, #security, and #secrecy are both #weapons and #defenses.
Digital technology has to have access to data in order to function, but access to data can always be abused, so digital technology combined with #neoliberalism and #neofeudalism force us into a state where for our own safety well-being, we are behooved to trust no one and nothing, which only furthers the goals of "divide and conquer".

Looks like we all need to find replacements for #Firefox and #Thunderbird.
I'm trying out LibreWolf on Windows, but what can replace Thunderbird that's cross platform (Win, Mac, Linux, at least)? SeaMonkey, maybe? Is that independent from Mozilla?
#Mozilla seems intent on profit at the expense of users.

@nprofile…j90y @nprofile…6w77 @nprofile…wk6u I feel compelled to point out that the United States does not and has *never* used Imperial units.
First of all, the US is legally a metric nation and has been since 1893.
Second of all, the UK Imperial system of units did not come unto being until decades after the US became an independent nation.
The US has what we call "customary units", which like the Imperial units have their basis in medieval British usage, but are different and have never been "Imperial".

Real power is exercised by influence and money, and in order to exert that influence, you have to be in the room and have financial leverage.
Trump is unilaterally disarming and dismantling the US, and the result will be that Russia and China will flow rapidly into the vacuum left behind, and US prestige and influence will catastrophically decline, leaving us locked out and isolated from real power.
Maybe the EU will gain from this. The UK will not. AU and NZ will be left hanging.

The blind arrogance with which the Trump Administration is abandoning our international commitments and our global standing shows that no one in the Trump Administration is competent at running a business, let alone a nation-state.
"Keep your friends close, and keep your enemies closer."
Instead of being world leaders, the Trump Administration clearly believes that they can rule the world by fiat, because they think the US is so powerful that our allies will have to acquiesce.

Ultra-light, low-speed, short-range #MicroEVs should not be built with carbon fiber composites—which are not and never will be #sustainable, by their very nature, despite their strength/weight ratio.
They should be built with 100% #recyclable #steel and #aluminium #bicycle (or at most #motorcycle) #technology, with #replaceable, #biodegradeable plastics where it makes sense (like body shells), and #natural #materials where possible (like #textiles).

#Bicycles and #ebikes do NOT solve the problems created by society's reliance on motor vehicles, because the problems created by society's reliance on motor vehicles are all related to the distance and speed at which motor vehicles can travel, not what fuel they use.
Replacing cars with bikes doesn't work, unless you are already within cycling distance of everything. It's land policy reform that is the solution we need, in addition to banning cars.
We must bring homes and destinations closer.

Over the holidays, I ordered a gallon of rice bran oil to use as fryer oil and finally make use of my Presto Fry Daddy electric deep fryer, so today's lunch is ginisang fried potatoes. Yellow potatoes seasoned with Ajinomoto PH's Ginisa seasoning, tossed in potato starch, and fried until they float in the hot oil.
The electric deep fryer works much easier than trying to regulate the heat on the stove. #cooking
Ginisa is chicken powder, salt, sugar, msg, onion, and garlic. #Masarap!

This is not limited to #mastodon or any other particular service, beit #federated or not.
Admins/moderators have absolute power. There is no way to hold thme accountable, no body to which to appeal their arbitrary and injust decisions, and no real consequences.

This year's ham glaze #recipe was a success. I had an idea, I guessed at the proportions, and it turned out just right. #cooking
Apricot Balsamic Ham Glaze
200 g apricot preserves
50 g balsamic vinegar
100 g dark brown sugar
2 Tbsp Japanese hot mustard flour
1/8 tsp fine Himalayan pink salt

Mincemeat pie almost finished #baking, after that, I'll prep my ham to slow roast until this evening.
I had to improvise a pie tin out of a cast iron skillet lined with aluminium foil, because I haven't baked a pie in over 7 years, and apparently no longer own pie tins or plates.

@nprofile…gd7f This is why when I went to visit my family in the PH in 1999, I brought an MSR Waterworks II filter system. Only, I didn't actually end up using it that much. I probably ended up drinking bottled water most of the time (if I wasn't drinking Coca-Cola or San Miguel, lol), but it's been 25 years, so it's hard to remember.

My order of Kuhn Rikon mini vase ceramic #spice grinders just arrived. I got two black, one white, and one red. The two black ones will get black pepper and white pepper, the white one will get sea salt, and the red one will get a mixture of Sichuan peppercorns and red chile flakes. At least, that's the plan for right now. I'm beginning to wonder if I shouldn't have ordered two red. #cooking #kitchen #mala #麻辣
What's not obvious from the pix or descriptions is the mini vase is indeed glass…

@nprofile…3qcd #BikeNitePQ Is there such a thing as an object that would turn a clip-in pedal into a platform pedal? Like, a little platform that clips into the pedal instead of having a cleat embedded in your shoe, that you can then step on with a normal shoe?
I ask this, because I hate clip-in pedals and prefer traditional platform pedals, but electronic advancements like pedals with strain gauges/power meters don't seem to come in platform versions, only clip-in versions like Shimano SPD.
