🚨 WARNING: THE U.S. OPEN COULD SHOCK EVERYONE
Something shifted this week, and almost nobody connected the dots.
Two of the largest holders of U.S. debt started walking toward the exit at the same time. Japan sold $71 billion in Treasuries, its biggest offload in decades. China is doing the same, just quieter.
But the selling isn't the real story. It's what they're buying with the proceeds.
Both are dumping dollars and stacking gold to record highs. That's the signal that matters. When the world's biggest economies trade U.S. paper for hard metal, they're placing a bet on where this all ends.
And Japan doesn't even have a choice. Buried under ¥15.3 trillion in bond losses, it has to keep selling Treasuries just to prop up a collapsing yen. That pressure only builds from here.
Here's why it spirals:
More selling → Higher yields → More strain → More intervention → More gold buying → Less dollar dependence.
Round and round, feeding itself.
Now the timing. When U.S. markets reopen from the long weekend on September 8, they have to price all of it at once, record foreign selling, rising yields, a softer dollar, and they'll do it on thin, post-holiday liquidity.
That's the trap. Rising yields quietly rot the foundation under stretched valuations. And a market propped up by five names has nothing underneath if bonds start cracking.
This is how a financial order changes. Not in one crash. Slowly, then suddenly.

A Warning From the Past: How the Communist State Stole the Keys to Privacy➡️
Most citizens of Budapest were still fast asleep when a special edition of the Magyar Közlöny (the official government gazette) on February 17, 1952, officially published Decree No. 4 of the Presidential Council of the People's Republic. With this single stroke of a pen, the #communist #dictatorship of the Rákosi era abolished the final bastions of urban private property.
The regime aimed not only to deal a financial blow to the so-called "class enemies," but also to target the deepest sphere of private life: the safety of the home.
The law operated with ruthless precision. Former owners lost their apartment buildings, villas, or hard-earned condominiums overnight, without any compensation whatsoever.
In the capital alone, more than 36,000 properties fell into state hands. According to the dictatorship's ideology, this was the punishment of "capitalists and exploiters," but in reality, the urban middle class was stripped of its past and its wealth.
The real drama began when authorities appeared at the doors of spacious, upper-middle-class apartments. Since the state was incapable of providing housing for the factory workers flooding into the cities, it resorted to a violent solution: introducing the institution of the társbérlet (co-tenancy / forced shared housing). Large homes were divided by walls or simply by partitions. The original owner's family was squeezed into a single room, while strangers who had moved from the countryside and were loyal to the Communist Party were moved into the remaining rooms. The shared use of the kitchen and bathroom became a constant source of friction; private life ceased to exist, and suspicion and forced cohabitation became a daily reality behind closed doors.
The most brutal chapter of the process, however, was the wave of #deportations. The residents of elegant villas in Buda and grand apartments, aristocrats, former civil servants, and factory owners were loaded onto trucks and deported to rural forced labor camps or remote farms, leaving all their property behind.
Yet, these real estates did not go to the celebrated working class. The vacant homes, fully furnished with luxury items, were allocated by members of the communist party elite, officers of the ÁVH (State Protection Authority – the notorious Hungarian secret police), and Soviet advisors to themselves, settling into the lives of those they had driven out.
The management of the nationalized buildings was eventually taken over by the local Councils' IKV (Ingatlankezelő Vállalat – Real Estate Management Company; the state-run enterprise responsible for maintaining public housing).
From that point on, an apartment was no longer a market commodity or a family heritage, but a state benefit granted on political grounds, distributed based on loyalty to the Party.
Because the state kept rents artificially low, the IKV never had the budget or the will for maintenance. The facades of historic #Budapest buildings began to crumble, and the once-patrician apartment houses decayed and became impoverished for decades, bearing the tangible marks of the dictatorship's inner workings.

Because, fundamentally, it depends on when you visit
Here’s an in-depth look
The lagoon and canals of Venice don’t always smell, and they don’t smell everywhere
It’s an intermittent odor, often localized, that comes in waves
What you usually catch is a mix of rotten eggs, sulfur, swamp, and rotting salt marsh
It happens for a combination of reasons
With heat and nutrients entering the lagoon from wastewater, agriculture, and (to some extent) industry, algae grow excessively
When they die and decompose in oxygen-poor water, bacteria produce hydrogen sulfide: that’s the classic rotten-egg smell
Then there’s low tide
When the water recedes, mud, silt, and algae are left exposed on canal bottoms and mudflats
Under sun and heat, that material “cooks” and gives off the smell
High tide, by contrast, renews and dilutes everything
Add the historic sewage system: Venice does not have a complete modern sewer network, and many buildings still discharge into the canals
The tides are supposed to flush the city twice a day, but when circulation is poor or the load is high — tourism, heat, stagnant water in secondary canals — the smell becomes noticeable
Sometimes dredging plays a role too: when a canal is emptied for maintenance, the bottom is exposed and can smell strongly, but only there and only for a short time
Industrial episodes from Porto Marghera do happen, but they are not the everyday cause of smells in the historic center
The worst time is summer, especially July and August: more heat, more algae, more frequent and more pronounced low tides, more people, and more waste
The first warm spells in May and June already trigger decomposition
It gets worse on hot, humid, windless days, because the smell lingers
In mild spring and autumn weather it is much less noticeable
In winter it almost disappears, except during rare, exceptionally low tides
High water, paradoxically, usually helps: the water circulates and flushes everything out
It is not a permanent smell across the whole city
Often, walking a few dozen meters away — or simply waiting for the tide to come back in — is enough

Every dollar the government takes from you destroys more than one dollar of wealth. This is the foundational insight that most people miss entirely, because they only see the check written to the IRS.

France literally sent ships to collect gold. Nixon's response to this discipline: eliminate the discipline. Default dressed as policy.
What followed was a brutal market reaction. Gold hit $200 by 1974, then touched $800 in January 1980. That 2,200% move over a decade was measurement. Gold measured the dollar's collapse in real time, and the dollar collapsed because the Federal Reserve, unshackled from any redemption obligation, printed with extraordinary enthusiasm throughout the 1970s. Sound money advocates have documented this exhaustively. The data is not ambiguous. The dollar has lost over 97% of its purchasing power since 1913. Savings punish you. Debt rewards you. The entire incentive structure tilts toward spending today, borrowing recklessly, and holding real assets. This system is designed to fund unlimited government spending through monetary expansion rather than honest taxation.

The politician who loots Transnet's locomotive procurement budget suffers nothing. You suffer the freight delays, the port backlogs, the closed businesses. He suffers a comfortable retirement.
The cruelest part is the cage. Capital controls under exchange control regulations restrict how much money South Africans are "allowed" to move offshore. The tax base keeps shrinking as skilled workers emigrate, yet the state expands. The rand has lost roughly 70% of its value against the dollar since 2010.
Black Economic Empowerment concentrates wealth among ANC-connected elites while creating the illusion of redistribution. Cyril Ramaphosa's own fortune grew through BEE dealmaking. The poor stay poor. The connected get rich. You fund all of it.
Come election day, they bus in millions of illiterates who are under the impression the ANC itself pays for their govenment grants, then they give them some KFC to seal the deal for the next 5 years.

The spiral tightened. As trade collapsed, tax revenue fell further. Soldiers went unpaid or received debased coin they couldn't spend. Loyalty evaporated. Provincial generals raised their own armies and declared themselves emperor (there were over 50 claimants in the 3rd century alone).
Free market thinkers have always pointed to this sequence as the purest historical case study in monetary destruction. When government substitutes political will for sound money, it doesn't bend economic law. It cannot bend. The market punishes incompetence with bankruptcy. The state rewards it with a bigger office and a longer tenure.

Rome handed out free grain to 40,000 citizens in 73 BC. By 46 BC, Julius Caesar found 320,000 people lining up for their monthly ration. That eight-fold expansion happened in under three decades, and it shows you how welfare states actually grow.
No Roman senator stood up and announced a plan to addict a third of the city to government bread. It happened incrementally, through political competition. Each magistrate who wanted votes expanded eligibility. Each expansion normalized the next one. The citizen who once considered the dole shameful eventually expected it, then demanded it, then organized politically to protect it.
This is the core mechanism free market thinkers have identified across every era: once you create a transfer program, you create a constituency for that program. Recipients vote. Administrators build careers. Grain merchants who supply the state develop a stake in keeping the contracts flowing. The political economy locks in.
Caesar, to his credit, actually cut the rolls back to 150,000 through verification audits. It was one of his more economically coherent moves, though the Senate still murdered him. His successors quietly let the numbers climb again.
What did the dole require? Massive grain imports from Sicily, Sardinia, and Egypt, organized through state logistics at state expense, funded by taxation and conquest. When the conquest revenue dried up, the obligation remained. Rome had written a check against future military success, and future military success eventually failed to arrive.
The lesson is not complicated. Distribute a benefit and you distribute dependency. Distribute dependency and you distribute political power to whoever controls the distribution. The grain dole didn't weaken Rome overnight, but it made every subsequent reform politically impossible.

In 1953, the #Marine #Angel, a cargo ship measuring 634 feet (about 193 meters) in length, made its way along the #Chicago #River, passing beneath the #Michigan #Avenue Bridge.
At the time, it was the largest vessel ever to travel that route. The ship was en route to Lake Michigan to be converted into a self-unloading ore carrier for service on the Great Lakes.
Navigating such a massive vessel through downtown Chicago was a complex task. The Marine Angel had to maneuver around sharp bends and under low bridges, assisted by tugboats and experienced crews to ensure safe passage.
The Saint Lawrence seaway wouldn’t be open until 1959 and this was the only way to get a ship of this size from the eastern seaboard into the Great Lakes.
