fwiw, at school (1980's East Germany) we had wall maps like this, and I bet those were mostly printed in the late 1950s or early '60s.
I can't remember any 'political discussion' about the correct map projections to use though, and the GDR would be the first to jump on the 'western colonialism' bandwagon ;)

that whole map projection drama is so weird. The bottom projection is (roughly, there are different variants) what was used in all world maps I've ever seen, both before and after Germany's unification. Mercator is *extremely* uncommon (except maybe for naval navigation). Is this like a metric vs imperial unit thing? Eg do US school wall maps actually use Mercator?

Damn, @npub1lfn…5lyy seriously nerd-sniped me to consider starting that home-region terrain rendering thingie that's been rolling around in my head for decades :D
E.g. I just checked what's available now for free, and there's 1x1m terrain data for download from the Saxon government. here's a random hill-shaded 2x2km tile (I just let claude cobble together a python+numpy script to 'hillshade' the data (because the tiff itself just comes out white in the macOS viewer):

...that made me check again what I can get for the region around my home town, and wow, 1 meter resolution heightmaps as 2x2 km tiles, and even the raw LIDAR point cloud data for all of Saxony, and all for free.
Last I checked (but that was probably 15 years ago), the best you could get was heightmap data with 30m resolution, or at best 10m for some areas.

Interesting... a signed 64-bit integer is a pretty close match for a 1-light-year-sized coordinate system (1ly in each direction) with a resolution of 1 millimeter.
E.g.
1<<63 = 9.223.372.036.854.775.808 mm
(300000 * 1000 * 1000) * (365 * 24 * 3600) = 9.460.800.000.000.000.000 mm
Coincidence? I THINK NOT! :D

hmm yeah... AFAIK the home computer revolution was mostly feeding on an overcapacity of slightly outdated 8-bit chips which suddenly became very cheap at the start of the 80s, and hobbyists and enthusiasts started to build all sorts of awesome things with this 'junk'.
Maybe we'll see a similar Cambrian Explosion after the AI bubble pops and suddenly there's a shitton of just slightly outdated GPUs and memory flooding the market waiting to be used for actually interesting stuff :)

IMHO this 'war on personal computing' had been going on in the background for decades with varying intensity, similar to how DDOS attacks happen all the time without bringing the whole internet down (mostly at least). Personal computing might go back to be the niche/hobbyist activity it was in the 70s to 90s, but it won't entirely disappear. I guess it might become an expensive hobby again though :/

I have switched the Chips emulator debug UI to the Dear ImGui docking branch, and added imgui.ini persistency via LocalStorage. I'll probably spend the next couple of days on related stuff. To test, start via the top-right-corner 'UI' buttons:

for containers I would definitely write my own highly specialized classes in perf-critical code bases. Since the requirements are much more focused those can be done in a couple of hundred lines instead of tens of thousands like the stdlib containers.

I think the Orthodox C++ advice of "don't use anything from the STL that allocates memory" makes sense for perf-critical code bases: https://gist.github.com/bkaradzic/2e39896bc7d8c34e042b
For the rare case where I use C++ for cmdline tools I'm more "open" (e.g. in sokol-shdc I use std::vector and std::string together with pystring and libfmt) but that's about as far as I would go.
