This whiplash struck me in the late 1990s, yeah. Had to revise the advice I was giving to loved ones.
What an obviously stupid decision by MS, surely everyone who says they want security will abandon this single program that makes them uniquely vulnerable, and use any of the others that don't have this flaw.
The growing horror as I observed exactly the opposite trend, has never left me.

It seems clear to me that the embarrassment lands squarely on the tech media, who should be far better at communicating "#OpenOffice is not what you're looking for, use #LibreOffice @npub1tgg…qwzh instead". That's firmly within the tech media's job.
The job of @npub1lpa…q3qx lies primarily in maintaining software. Let them maintain whatever software, for as long as people want it maintained.

Provided we understand "human flourishing" as incompatible with "endless growth of the human species".
We live on a finite planet [0], and human flourishing *requires* that we live bounded within the finite capacities of our environment.
[0] And no, there is currently no workable prospect of interplanetary colonies. The technologies that would be required to make them habitable can be applied *here*, to help our *only living planet* avoid environmental catastrophe.
