The reason Mastodon-flavor ActivityPub has been stagnant for most of the last decade is the only people who take the lingering cultural and structural issues seriously are working on what comes _next_
It really ought to concern anyone who still believes in this place that AP doesn't have its own event to match AtmosphereConf. There was exactly one over half a decade ago. All the energy at the 2026 event was exponential starting from the 2025 event. The PLC directory is headed to the independent org announced there. The IETF has the protocol. It's happening, right now.
If you're looking at Bluesky, you're looking at where the puck is, not where it's going.
You want more people to use AP? Stop complaining about people building on and using AT and start trying to understand why they are. I've been saying this for years now and nothing's changed on this side.

@npub1fdr…lvhs What's your go-to model(s) in Ollama? :blobfoxlurk:

2025 started with repairs and replacements. I spent the rest trying to recover savings. 2026 is starting with failing shoes and a dead laptop battery, which will wipe out 2025's efforts. With your support, I can spend 2026 making art instead of treading water. https://ko-fi.com/kyefox/goal?g=0

I had to replace a bunch of clothes earlier this year and it ate into my "break class in case of computer failure" fund. I've been trying to get it built back up, but things have been rough on account of *waves hand* everything
Hitting this goal would help a lot. https://ko-fi.com/kyefox/goal?g=24

I haven't used Netflify in ages but I remember a little console log thingy on deploys (on the web) that showed errors and stuff.

Why do all these pro-Linux campaigns zero in on EOL moments for Windows rather than listening to developers who have good reason for not targeting Linux?
Address _their_ concerns. They make the software that keeps me on Windows.

People on self-hosted PDSes were at least able to keep using it through the outage. :blobfoxlurk:

Didn't cost me anything. Fourthwall reserves the right to take it out of future profits in the event of problems in their terms, but they don't seem to do it in practice (or if the shipper doesn't honor the insurance).
I'm glad they turned out well. :blobhaj_sunglasses:

Fourthwall's people handle all that for me. I did pay attention when I noticed the package was taking a loooong time to get delivered. :blobfoxlurk:

I played around with a few of those I downloaded off AOL's software center. There are things kind of like it, but they start out way too complicated. Even RPG in a Box involves coding to start out.

There are almost 1000 instances, mostly independently-run. They're not exposed in the UI the way they are with Mastodon so it's not as obvious. https://github.com/mary-ext/atproto-scraping

It's interesting to see a lot of the proposed solutions to the problems botsin.space faced are solved problems on AT and part of why Bluesky made their own protocol instead of using AP.
Yeah, it's weird that every instance has to have a copy of every file, usually on expensive cloud storage. A shared resource would help there!
Like an AT relay, so instances (PDSes) only have to carry files and posts for people on them, and the bulk of load is on those relays since PDSes aren't usually accessed directly. They're like a CDN for federated systems.
I don't think it necessarily has to be either/or, as I've written about: https://kyefox.com/beyond-mastodon-and-bluesky-toward-a-protocol-agnostic-federation/

This needs some updates (like BGS->relay) but it seems like it's held up.
And expand with the notion of separating platform from social network. A future where you can plug in to any network or platform and have it all compatible is a good one.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but background radiation levels have dropped enough with the end of major nuclear testing that recovered low-background radiation steel is no longer needed for all but the most sensitive use cases.

Imagine you're a fox on the run from assassins in 2013.
You see a bunch of humans in animal costumes in the forests of Norway dancing around making noise, then realize it's a party put on by obscure comedy music duo Ylvis.
You think this is the perfect hiding spot. And then all eyes are on you.

Apropos of nothing, "I don't like this person, so I'm going to misgender them" is definitionally transphobia, not a valid reason.

The ability to run the code, even in binary form, and produce an output from an input negates any possible benefit from obscurity. It _will_ be broken. Denying researchers access just means that break will happen faster, and past obfuscations are more likely to be reversable.
It does nothing good.

Obscurity has never been a major hinderance to people who want to break security, but it does hinder people who want to make the security better.

I didn't realize #Glaze isn't open source, even to credible researchers whose reputations would go a long way toward increasing trust in the tool. That's seems like it should be unacceptable for a tool like this. https://spylab.ai/blog/glaze/
