Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, and while a lot may be deterministic in the future we can influence it, much ad we can a dance. And with time being a spiral, the gap between the now, the future and the past can be both very narrow and incomporably vast, even at the same time depending upon observation. Divination is an art! )O( @nprofile…3txf npub1f6sftqy58zjaqdzs40cwpz2g7kstmvw6z4wdsv6we04m2895mvfsy8cg8w Alexa Devreux-Swift @nprofile…x9tq Given such a siloed upbringing and education, where the elite have barely any interaction with wider society during their formative years, it is hardly any wonder that those who lead society are fundamentally clueless about the problems we face daily, and the way that society more broadly functions. It is a reciped for exactly the kind of socio-politocal disaster we are facing today. npub1f6sftqy58zjaqdzs40cwpz2g7kstmvw6z4wdsv6we04m2895mvfsy8cg8w Alexa Devreux-Swift @nprofile…x9tq The Green Party want to achieve two things: 1. Start at a 15£ NMW 2. Enact a 10:1 wage range Further down they wish to implement UBI as well. All these things have been looked at along with a 4 day working week, some have also been experimented with and all seem to suggest increading quality of life and employee wellbeing as well is improving the productivity and profitability of companies. This really should be a no brainer as it would be a win win for everyone. Unfortunately such paradigm shifts are always protested against, as we saw with the five day week and paid holidays in previous eras. npub1f6sftqy58zjaqdzs40cwpz2g7kstmvw6z4wdsv6we04m2895mvfsy8cg8w Alexa Devreux-Swift @nprofile…x9tq Given the disparity between those on lowest income and those on the highest is ever widening, I doubt it will increase unemployment or force companies to invest in upskilling emoyees. npub1f6sftqy58zjaqdzs40cwpz2g7kstmvw6z4wdsv6we04m2895mvfsy8cg8w Alexa Devreux-Swift Today is TDoV 🏳️⚧️ #TDoV npub1f6sftqy58zjaqdzs40cwpz2g7kstmvw6z4wdsv6we04m2895mvfsy8cg8w Alexa Devreux-Swift @nprofile…x9tq I cannot see the UK rejoining any time within the next decade, the political costs are just far too high and toxic. Of course I may be wrong, but if the UK were to apply to join, those negotiations will be extremely tough, as the EU would seek to avoid a repeat of Brexit. Also, since the UK left the EU has moved even closer to a federal union, and that is only going to increase and gather pace, and that will be intolerable to a large section of the UK electorate. @nprofile…yndx npub1f6sftqy58zjaqdzs40cwpz2g7kstmvw6z4wdsv6we04m2895mvfsy8cg8w Alexa Devreux-Swift @nprofile…x9tq I would say that a moving parliament, which does have precedent, would be logistically difficult, just look to the EU Parliament for an example here. More practically we could have full devolution on the lower house, with the commons ONLY being for English MPs. The Scottish Parliament, Sennedd Cymru and NI Assembly could take the place of the Lower House in those jurisdictions with FULL competence. For UK wide matters the reformed Upper House could perhaps perform the primary legislation, sending the legislation down to the the nations Lower Houses for debate and scrutiny as can already happen. This would potentially overcome the West Lothian Question, and also the disparity in representation between England and Scotland. @nprofile…zr25 @nprofile…wfqh npub1f6sftqy58zjaqdzs40cwpz2g7kstmvw6z4wdsv6we04m2895mvfsy8cg8w Alexa Devreux-Swift @nprofile…x9tq I would perhaps be note radical, in that I would call for Parliament to be moved out of London, possibly to Manchester or Birmingham. @nprofile…zr25 @nprofile…wfqh npub1f6sftqy58zjaqdzs40cwpz2g7kstmvw6z4wdsv6we04m2895mvfsy8cg8w Alexa Devreux-Swift @nprofile…x9tq It is clear we need substantial reform. For the Commons I think we need complete electoral reform along the lines of party list proportional representation and, with the current building needing substantial refurbishment, we also have an opportunity to reform the chamber into a parliament in the round, as the ancient wytens once were. The current layout only exists as a result of a fluke of history from when the commons met in St Stephens. As for the Lords, first we need to disestablish the Church thus enabling a full separation of church and state. Then we can look at moving to Sortition which has been spoken about now for about three decades. Terms of either two or four years with an intake every year or two years seems very sensible. We could also perform these reforms along with boundary reform which is long overdue, and perhaps a reduction of the number of constituencies overall. Housing is a perennial issue and source of much alleged fraud, and we could alleviate that with parliamentary housing similar in principal to military Married Quarters. We should of course retain a Bicameral Parliament for checks and balances, especially considering that this IS a parliament and as such has blended powers, with the Executive Branch sitting in both houses of the Legislative Branch of government, with the attendant risks that not having full separation of powers brings. @nprofile…zr25 @nprofile…wfqh npub1f6sftqy58zjaqdzs40cwpz2g7kstmvw6z4wdsv6we04m2895mvfsy8cg8w Alexa Devreux-Swift @nprofile…npc0 I read Wikipedia an awful lot at work, and for search use either DuckDuckGo or Qwant. Personally I want full electoral reform (full PR, including Party list, and voting from 16), a constitutional convention, constitutional reform including codified Constitution and an elected head of state, reform of the Commons with a circular debating Chamber, reform and replacement of the Lords with a circular Chamber and both directly elected members and members appointed by sortition. Just as a start. And I do specify circular Chambers and not hemicycles. npub1f6sftqy58zjaqdzs40cwpz2g7kstmvw6z4wdsv6we04m2895mvfsy8cg8w Alexa Devreux-Swift @nprofile…hzyj It is a particularly knotty problem, for sure, and one without a definitive answer, and our discussion has shown the vast gulf that can exist between the understanding of what democracy is from a lay perspective and in a vernacular sense, what may be written in law, the actual practice of parliamentary democracy and the execution of laws. We shall be debating this for generations to come I think. npub1f6sftqy58zjaqdzs40cwpz2g7kstmvw6z4wdsv6we04m2895mvfsy8cg8w Alexa Devreux-Swift @nprofile…hzyj The proscription was a decision made by Ministers (Executive) and brought before Parliament (Legislative) all of whom are elected representatives. It is not anti democratic, we simply disagree with the decision which is arguably highly authoritarian. But then an AWFUL lot of us said that a Labour government would act in exactly this way, which they have, yet still people have voted them in. This indicates thst Was is required is electoral reform and strenous efforts to bring the overton window back toward the centre. The Policing issue is a separate issue and entirely appart from what is happening with PA and again, there is absolutely nothing stopping those within PA founding a new charity to carry on the work. As for protest, there is absolutely no legal right to protest under UK law! THAT is the truly anti democratic aspect of the uncodified British Constitution which desperately needs attention, but then strictly speaking I am a traitor because I am avowadly a republican, and saying this here, in this sentence, I am guilty of treason. By the letter of the law. So was the late Tony Benn, and yet neither he nor I have ever face arrest, because of the WAY that the laws are traditionally upheld rather than enforced. This has served the well until now, but going back to your previous statement about Parliament enacting laws that could harm democratic institutions, it is no longer. And here I think alongside voting reform the UK needs to full Constitutional Convention. The current highly authoritarian government trampling all over the long held convention of the right to peacefully protest against the government, when we disagree with its actions, shows how desperately needed these are. After all, if we are exercising rights which we do not and never have had in Law, how can we say that a government suppressing said protests is either illegal or anti democratic? In terms of purely BRITISH democracy it isn't, even if in terms of political science more broadly we can (and should) argue that it is! npub1f6sftqy58zjaqdzs40cwpz2g7kstmvw6z4wdsv6we04m2895mvfsy8cg8w Alexa Devreux-Swift @nprofile…hzyj I don't think your example fits as the US system is an Executive Presidential Republic whereas the UK is a Constitutional Monarchy Westminster Representative Democracy. In this Parliament is supposed to be Sovereign, with a blending of power meaning thsg the Executive is supposed to bring legislation before Parliament for vote. In terms of Rank, the US President ranks with The King, and even though King Charles has extensive Reserve Powers, if he were to try and exercise them directly and bypass Parliament it would quite likely cause a Constitutional Crisis, we can see this in action whe The Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod has the door to the Commons slammed in his face. In this specific case, we are talking about a judgement based upon assessments by state security Organisations regarding a civil society charity. Neither of these exist democraticly. And just because the incumbent charity has been declared by said security Organisations and Ministers to be a security threat and banned, this does not mean that those who worked for PA cannot create a new charity to take its place, avoiding those decisions which resulted in the prescription of PA. Just to be clear, I do NOT like the decision that was made regarding PA, however, my analysis of this is that if I had the intelligence briefing that Ministers had (and which I think WAS brought before Parliament) the I would likely have made the same decision. Why? Because it is highly likely that PA had no option but to engage with Hamas, and Hamas is a terrorist organisation. It is an unfortunate consequence of trying to undertake charitable work in a live conflict zone. Does this mean the Police are justified in arresting septaganarian anglican priests and grandmothers? Absolutely not and such actions do not even meet the threshold of public interest let alone justify the CPS bringing them to Court. But THIS is a separate issue and THIS is anti democratic, and nothing to do with any proscribed organisation. npub1f6sftqy58zjaqdzs40cwpz2g7kstmvw6z4wdsv6we04m2895mvfsy8cg8w Alexa Devreux-Swift @nprofile…hzyj So, as a representative democracy, unlike a few communities in Switherland, you have: 1. Voted for your representatives in Parliament 2. Those representatives have formed the Legislative and Executive 3. The executive have decided to ban a group using powers given it How is this "undemocratic" IAW a representative democracy? It might be unwise, it might be illogical, it might be inhuman, we might vociferously disagree with it. But how exactly is it undemocratic for directly elected representatives to perform the duties to which they were elected? Just as an aside, we do not know what intellgence was made available to ministers, and even if we did have that data, would we know how to analyse it? Not that I have much faith in Labour Ministers to be capable of doing this either, but intellgence analysis is not an easy thing, and such data must be kept classified to keep us all safe IMHO (and professional experience). npub1f6sftqy58zjaqdzs40cwpz2g7kstmvw6z4wdsv6we04m2895mvfsy8cg8w Alexa Devreux-Swift @nprofile…hzyj Is the UK a Direct Democracy? @nprofile…t5kd npub1f6sftqy58zjaqdzs40cwpz2g7kstmvw6z4wdsv6we04m2895mvfsy8cg8w Alexa Devreux-Swift @nprofile…hzyj Britain already operates some of the most heavily used, densest and most efficient transport infrastructure in the world. It cannot "efficiency increase" its way out of this conundrum unfortunately, and that means building something. I would say that a Thames Estuary Airport would be a good option, however, this would I think bring it into conflict with Schiphol Airport and for that reason alone may not be feasible. Building a new International Hub with three runways and automatic expansion to add a fourth, well, on environmental grounds alone that will never happen. This leaves finding a way to operate Heathrow and Gatwick essentially as a single Airport, however, given that Gatwick is ALSO operating nearly at capacity, there are limits there, even after the existing Northern Runway is shifted a fee metres north to enable simultaneous operation of both runways. No matter what decision is made (and as someone who works in Aerospace, I favour rail expansion) we are going to piss somebody off! npub1f6sftqy58zjaqdzs40cwpz2g7kstmvw6z4wdsv6we04m2895mvfsy8cg8w Alexa Devreux-Swift @nprofile…hzyj The major issue is not so much WHERE Heathrow is located, it could be located anywhere. The issue is that it is a major international hub, AMD one of the biggest, busiest and most efficient in Europe if not the planet. Unfortunately (in terms of the environment and Airport capacity) more passengers and Airlines want to fly point to point, rather than the more tradional hub and spoke model. For the point to point flights WD really should be building out more high speed rail, as that is even more efficient than even a wide body airliner, is environmentally far more sustainable, each train can carry as many or more passengers than even the largest wide body amd by traveling city centre to city centre can attain faster journey times over mid range flights. Unfortunately we only have to look at HS2 and other high speed rail schemes across Europe to see how contentious such schemes are. npub1f6sftqy58zjaqdzs40cwpz2g7kstmvw6z4wdsv6we04m2895mvfsy8cg8w Alexa Devreux-Swift @nprofile…hzyj To be honest I think the fediverse is far less of a walled garden than big tech social media, and it requires a modicum of social skills in order to make connections within fedi as well. I certainly find a much wider range of viewpoints here than I did there, and the vast majority of people will engage in good faith, accept challenges to their opinions in that good faith without resorting to flame wars. There are of course outliers ... npub1f6sftqy58zjaqdzs40cwpz2g7kstmvw6z4wdsv6we04m2895mvfsy8cg8w Alexa Devreux-Swift "We understand that there will be differences depending on the sports. But it was fully agreed that as members that, as the IOC, we should make the effort to place emphasis on protection of the female category.” Protect the female category? From what, exactly? What will you be protecting this category from exactly? Preventing better training facilities to bring them in line with those that men have? Protect them from better winnings payments? Protect them from achieving better results due to improved training, more in line with physical build? We all know that kilo for kilo all trans athletes are several percent weaker than their cisgender peers, so again, what exactly are you protecting the female category from, as no trans athlete would by choice opt for lower winnings, worsening performance ANF poorer facilities that this anti scientific policy suggests, and so the only protection is from the knowledge that kilo for kilo, women are quite capable of beating their mape equivalents in a variety of sports. And to add insult to injury, Jo Maugham has described Labour, Reform and Tories as engaging in a cruelty olympics which is further damning of an alleged progressive party that promised to protect trans peoples dignity, and make our lives easier. However, to accomplish something like that while bringing in, shall we call them MHPs for "Members of the House of Peers", via a form of jury service from all across the UK might require more than 600 peers, and I would also abolish the Lord's Spiritual as well as hereditary and life peers from sitting. I would say service for four years for those from the guilds, staggered every two years, and those not from the guilds but from a jury intake for two years as you suggest. The trouble is, as we all know, fusion is forever 25 years away! I fear we also went down the wrong path with fission, and should instead have developed breeder reactors and done more research into Thorium cycle reactors. Unfortunately I am not a nuclear physicist so my knowledge here is minimal, but revisiting this technology could be a very important way of not just bridging the energy gap which we seem to be rapidly approaching (not to mention keeping remaining sources of carbon and hydrocarbon fuels in the ground) but also reducing our stockpiles of both spent nuclear fuels and highly irradiated materials. The latter comes from a nuclear physicist in the UK who hypothesised that using neutron bombardment could be a way to make highly irradiated and dangerously radioactive materials completely safe. To perform that we would of course need neutron sources, and that means fission reactors, and probably bigger than the ones we use for things like Nuclear Medicine or making certain materials for mobile devices (insofar as I am aware, albeit not necessarily a mobile phone). npub1f6sftqy58zjaqdzs40cwpz2g7kstmvw6z4wdsv6we04m2895mvfsy8cg8w Alexa Devreux-Swift @nprofile…60lz well, pumped storage is only suitable in limited locales, and come with its own envirnomental problems. Battery technology while improving has very substantial issues with significant environmental damage in mining the raw materials, and also in the form of engaging with extremely problematic regimes. The same is true with solar PV. Also, in terms of thermodynamics, the figures may not add up. There are no easy answers here. In fact, we may not be able to get out of this energy crisis at all. npub1f6sftqy58zjaqdzs40cwpz2g7kstmvw6z4wdsv6we04m2895mvfsy8cg8w Alexa Devreux-Swift @nprofile…60lz never forget our history: In the last days of the Weimar Republic there was agitation on the street across Germany between Fascists and Communists, agitation that led to violent confrontation between rioters and the police and army. Of course the protesters in LA are not rioters, however that is exactly how the Trump Regime and its mouthpieces are framing this, as what they are trying to manipulate into being is what came, The Enabling Act. The United States is right now in a perillous position. Democracy is functionally dead in the country and if the current regime manipulate the next step into becoming a reality, it will be buried. What we can be certain of is this, the future country will most certainly not be the one we grew up knowing, just as the Germany of today is not the same Country as the one that went by that name in the early twentieth century. npub1f6sftqy58zjaqdzs40cwpz2g7kstmvw6z4wdsv6we04m2895mvfsy8cg8w Alexa Devreux-Swift @nprofile…60lz from a purely Energy perspective, renewables are superb but have one small flaw, baseload. They cannot yet provide stable baseload to keep the grid energised and this is where nuclear comes into play. And for the future where, hopefully, Fusion gets deployed, we will need Fision. We are in a double bind here. Insofar as the billions being put into new nuclear power plants, we are talking about plant which will likely be operational for 30 or 40 years, and when you account for fractional reserve banking this means that Government can borrow an awful lot more against their Investments, and so this makes an absurd kind of sense. The same is true for HS2 or Hospitals. npub1f6sftqy58zjaqdzs40cwpz2g7kstmvw6z4wdsv6we04m2895mvfsy8cg8w Alexa Devreux-Swift @nprofile…60lz I for one would welcome seeing it reforested, along with restoring the ancient Caledonian Forest. As a vegetarian I would also welcome a substantial reduction of livestock farming, and allowing domesticated farm animals to return to their natural wild state as well. The latter of course is a welfare issue and will have to be undertaken in a humane way, with a plethora of moral issues to overcome. The former has enormous potential to pull carbon and other pollutants from the atmosphere as well as substantially reducing flood risks, which are of course urgent needs. I suspect that neither can be done with the UNESCO designation. npub1f6sftqy58zjaqdzs40cwpz2g7kstmvw6z4wdsv6we04m2895mvfsy8cg8w Alexa Devreux-Swift @nprofile…60lz this is no doubt a very complex issue, as hill farming of sheep has without doubt created the landscape we see today, which is best described as barren. Vast swathes of native forest were cleared to enable livestock farming, forest which those engaged in rewilding would like to restore, and this includes the ancient rainforest that used to exist until it was clearcut. The question that follows on from this would be, how can we square the needs of hill farmers with the need to undo the environmental damage done by human habitation and industry, some of which goes back millennia? I doubt that there is an easy answer, however, reversing environmental degradation is urgent, and reforestation can enable a switch in hill farming from sheep and cattle to boar, pigs and poultry, which would be necessary to maintain healthy woodlands. Insofar as over tourism this is a growing issue, with parts of Northern Italy such as Sud Tirol and Venice experiencing similar issues, and now taking steps to control numbers of visitors. npub1f6sftqy58zjaqdzs40cwpz2g7kstmvw6z4wdsv6we04m2895mvfsy8cg8w Alexa Devreux-Swift @nprofile…2wkl trans women please 🥺 npub1f6sftqy58zjaqdzs40cwpz2g7kstmvw6z4wdsv6we04m2895mvfsy8cg8w Alexa Devreux-Swift @nprofile…gtf6 @nprofile…kvnh your uncle obviously has never heard about trans men 🤦🏼♀️ npub1f6sftqy58zjaqdzs40cwpz2g7kstmvw6z4wdsv6we04m2895mvfsy8cg8w Alexa Devreux-Swift @nprofile…kvnh what, and as a trans woman I can not stress this ENOUGH, the actual FUCK!?
