re:Sony, better cross the NEXes off the list; a lot of the newer 3rd party lens brands doesn't work as well with those models (either having bad autofocus or outright refusing the camera from starting up)
Grab an A6xxx model for APS-C, or A7iii, A7Riii, or A7Riv if you want full-frame sensors instead :mukiPeek:

Can totally see how this will end up being a "permanent temporary solution" the way the BSDs are doing with e.g. GPU drivers.
And with it I can't help but think just how complicated GPUs must've become that other FOSS Unixes see it infeasible to homegrow their own drivers for it... and I fear this is kind of where everything will go in the future...
Probably this is just me having wrong conceptions of how things were in the 2nd Millenium but wow I do think that it's amazing that during that time it seems like even all-volunteer teams actually have a fighting chance to e.g homegrow their Unix implementations to a state that's quite competitive with the best commercial offerings
But I suppose that time is long gone by now huh

Y'know, that now I'm revisiting this, I'm starting to notice a couple things:
- If you want to compile C to OpenGenera Lisp (and particularly, if you want your C compiler to play nice with others), then you need to specify a standardized way to represent C objects as Lisp data.
- If you want your C compiler to interoperate with the Ada compiler, then both sides would need to agree a uniform way to represent in-language objects as Lisp objects, etc.
Which, if you ask me, looks suspiciously a lot like an ABI.
So you could turn the argument around, like so:
> x86 has an Ada and a C compiler. You don't *have* to code in x86 if you didn't want to. But you *do* need to provide source for it to build into something that could be run and interface with the rest of the system.
This ends up sounding like "this ISA sucks, let's invent our own better one!", which is not wrong per se (see e.g. the amount of other ISAs being made), but it's also a much weaker argument.
And this also means that if you're writing, say, C, on such a machine, it'll have to go through a compilation step, which means that the resulting Lisp code is going to be mechanically generated anyway, and given the difference in readability between human-written vs mechanically-generated x86 code, I have no reason to believe things are going to become better just because the compilation target is now Lisp.

Similar to how nothing prevents you to engineer your own data transfer formats/protocols to include some form of error detection and/or correction and do everything in software, while the hardware is completely oblivious to it
Totally doable, but of course having such things supported directly by the hardware would speed up things :blobcatpeekaboo:
Also with RAM specifically, you'd need somewhere to store the correction bits, so doing it in software would mean that you'll have to set some storage apart just for that; on the other hand ECC modules already take that into account during manufacture

To be fair to them, I do like the compression and checksumming, it's just all the extra baggages makes it more trouble than helpful, overall
Maybe I'll use it if I'm making a storage server where I don't tinker with the software inside it much, but for daily-use computers I feel like traditional FSes serve me better :haha:
