because I've always wanted it to be Microsoft who decides what gets installed to my linux.

My main argument for still sticking with Firefox-based browsers is to fight the Chromium monoculture. I feel the biggest threat to the internet is if all other JS engines die, and then web standards become wholly captured by Google.
When enough people run FF, there's still a chance the web will remain interoperable.

"Climate advocacy has not failed, climate policy has been sabotaged."
It's easy to think that what's stopping meaningful #ClimateAction is ignorance or selfishness of people.
But that's just not true anymore: the overwhelming majority of people want to stop the #ClimateCrisis. The problem is active sabotage of democracy by #BigOil, corporations, far right and elites.

No matter how much I read and process, I always come back to this excellent New Yorker cartoon by Tom Toro. It cuts through all the noise so well.
The message doesn't have to be more complicated than this.

And two years later the seventh out of nine planetary boundaries has been breached as ocean acidification joins the danger zone.
This should be headline news.

I sometimes get asked if there is room for ambition in a #degrowth world?
My answer: absolutely – just not in the endless pursuit of personal wealth.
In what then?
The philosophy of transcendentals has one answer. Focus instead on the universal values of:
Truth –> #science and #education
Goodness –> #politics and ethics
Beauty –> #art
In all of these activities, there is almost no limit to how far you can follow your ambition, while still remaining within planetary limits.

If you boil it down it's just the age-old "look at what you made me do" excuse for abuse.

November has been rough for me. Terrible international news, stress at work and almost no sunlight in Helsinki has been a lot handle.
Then I got ill but tried to get back to work too early, and it was all too much.
I've now had to block all news and social media from Thu to Sun with the great Freedom.to app (the only SaaS I pay for). It has helped, and I've for example read a lot of fiction again.
Unfortunately, it means less time on Mastodon. But I'm still here!
P.s. Hello new followers!

OWiD [1] references UNECE [2], which gives these in m2a/TWh:
* Nuclear: 0.25–0.75
* Wind (combined): 0.3 – 1
* Solar: 0.7 – depends on type
Isn't the advantage for nuclear tiny?
Personally, given Gen 3 nuclear's high costs, slow and uncertain construction, big unit size (potential for big outages and targets for terrorism) and radioactive waste, I'd think wind and effective solar (like rooftops) is a better strategy.

From what I've read, the current gen III reactors simply can't be built fast enough to replace fossil fuels in time, with low enough energy price. The construction time for a Gen III reactor is also easily delayed (our brand new reactor in Finland missed its promised delivery date by 14 years).
I have hope for gen IV reactors, but overall, the disconnect between how much hope people have on nuclear compared how much nuclear energy is actually possible to produce to the grid is huge.

Yes, agreed. My point was to highlight the disconnect between the severity and breadth of the ecological crisis, and what I hear so many people think is the solution to it.
Wrt nuclear, I think SMRs have promise. I don't, however, think there is evidence to support that the current nuclear technology is a competitive alternative, ecologically or economically. (We all followed in Finland how our brand new nuclear reactor missed it's promised delivery date by 14 years.)

Tell me again that the only ecological problem we need to focus on is too much greenhouse gases.
Explain to me how nuclear energy is The Solution.
Convince me that rich countries can keep consuming exponentially more every year, if we just make sure that consumption is "green".
Give me your optimistic take on how electrification, digitalization, fusion energy and/or "AI" will both prevent #EarthBreakdown and save capitalism.
I dare you.
