We’ve lost the art of conversation. We attend to the exercise, not to hear ideas that may change our mind, but just to hear ourselves talk (myself included).

Well, you “learn” something, you are free to assign values and truths to what you have learned. Regarding “feelings”, you can let your reflexive (learned) biases take over or you can intentionally step back, lose your bias/es and look at facts of events before reacting (lose the reflexive feelings). There is a phrase by Viktor Frankl — “Between the stimulus and response, there is a space. And in that space lies our freedom and power to choose our responses. In our response lies our growth and our freedom”. (Although honestly I think the phrase was erroneously credited to him but the point of the phrase remains — I could not find it in his book ‘Man’s Search for Meaning’)

I suppose how “free” one is depends on if one believes in free will? I guess if one is deterministic, all of one’s actions are, in the end, determined by some cause that is external to any ones “will”.

I find Debian very stable (though a little slow getting new shiny things but that makes it more stable), running that alongside Manjaro (rolling release so much more updated, very stable although less stable than Debian IMHO) I think I have a great set for my use case.

Debian 12 “bookworm” is out. Testing it some. It’s with kernel 6.1 (one kernel behind from newest when I installed)…seemed solid but needs tinkering for my work apps i needed. Primary iso has both free and non free firmware. Working solid so far. (But I have to admit I still use Manjaro for my dailies).

I think we were beginning to be more aware of this burnout in the early 70’s. HITECH opened the gates and ushered the advent of the straw that is breaking the camel’s back (EPIC in my case, but more than just that). I share your burden. How we cope differs but I would hazard that the goal is the same. I started focusing on “atelic” activities and view “telic” ones as a means to achieve the former. Our rounds are never going to be shorter, consults are never going to be fewer.
Shared burden makes it easier to swallow - share your thoughts.
Time is limited. I begin rounds with an eye towards the promise of time to spend on that which I “dont need to do” but “want to do”. - focus on the “atelic” (although do not forget the “oath”).
Kieran Setiya maybe a rabbit hole you might consider to explore.
Hold the line, although you don’t need to toe the line.

True. We do carry patterns no matter when or where, by years of habituation (for better or worse). An attending once mentioned that we can change how we dress, same old character will eventually show up. Smart guy. Interestingly, his last name was also “Wise”. 😂

2023-07-05 23:27:40 GMT

Hahaha, good point. If I then make a pure descriptive proposition about that matter, sans my biases, the only facts of the case that I would find would be: that there is the dog (color, posture, hairy-ness, etc), then the cracklin sounds (maybe vibrations, etc), and then the ensuing barks (maybe including the quantity, meter, patterns of sound, etc). But one CANNOT find “joy” or “dislike” or any other emotion contained within that particular happening. There was no “emotion” at all that can be found in the event. The mind can then be blamed as the only source of that emotion.

Well my friend I hope you do not tire of the thought exercise. I only meant honest engagement as I always learn from others. Men of thought are fundamentally reductionists: existence cannot be “physical awareness” (if you remove personal bias you cannot find “existence via the five basic senses), extinction is a label (complex theory: quarks and gluons remain even though the macro, ie body disappears), “selfessness” is a quirky word (where is the “self”, can you find it, where is it?). I come with an open mind. I shall further dissect a more coherent response once I disassemble camp.

2023-07-05 03:13:21 GMT

Agree with consistency, re: “survival”, as that’s probably hardwired in our biology. One has to define what “existence” is, then one could be satisfied (or not) based on their definition of that (and their perceived state of distance from the definition). I don’t subscribe to free will (as one traditionally defines it) but that’s a whole ‘nother topic right there 😂🤣

Agree. Ones freedom to ones own belief and practice “as one sees fit”, as long as we don’t infringe on those whose belief does not fit our own. A civil, rational discourse with respect offered by both sides is lacking sometimes.

Agree. I think a government borne out of pure human rationality can cause a “constant”. Aristotle, Kant, Spinoza talks about rationality as ultimate end in a way (the highest virtue). Unfortunately we’ve buried that a longtime ago and replaced the reflective capacity to rationalize overpowered by the primitive brain’s “desire”.
Good convo to end my Monday night. Thank you both for engaging.

Democracy. I believe he did not favor “democracy” at least the one practiced (he thinks it failed) during that time (he blames that for the death of Socrates). Although one could argue he meant “humanity” or the citizenry, ie he equates such democratic failure (then) to humanity (then) as he thinks a man’s charater reflects the state he lives in. At least that’s how I understands the flow of that thought. 🤷‍♂️

1. Breath
2. Wake up early
3. Stand up straight
4. Move
5. Smile
6. Watch a funny show
7. Get a dog
8. Take a long drive
9. Connect with people
10. Connect with nature
11. Don’t just test your limits. Create new limits. Aspire for self-transformation by trying on the values that you would hope to one day possess. All growth is on the other side of the resistance.
12. Mood follows action
13. Try. If you fail, great! Most won’t even try.
14. Go after contentment. Happiness is an emotion. Contentment is a state. Pursue contentment and happiness will then come, as a side effect.
15. A wise man once said nothing. Sit. Take stock.
16. Aurelius, Seneca, Epictetus, Hume, Camus, Sarte, Kant, Spinoza
17. Nostr - that’ll be the way
