the most important part to remember about fedi is
you get out what you put in
a lot of people quit because they make an account and their feed is empty
they never take the time to write a bio, upload an avatar, make an introduction post, or even just try to follow others
you gotta do all that yourself here. because it's social media in your hands, but that means it's in your hands
so yes it's more upfront effort than corpo socials which do all that for you
but the payoff is massive and a much better overall social media experience than you could ever find anywhere on the big corpo web

sometimes it can be hard to find the right server! don't be afraid to shop around a bit and try out making accounts on different ones to help narrow down which you'd like to use the most! it's more upfront effort than corpo social media but the payoff is massive :3

i recommend signing up on a smaller approval-based instance btw! so not one that leaves the door wide open for anyone to make an account but rather one that vets new signups based on asking for a sentence or two about why you wanna join when you create an account
the moderators of these instances tend to be paying closer attention than the mods of huge open signup servers

so yeah if you see something bad, be sure to report it. an actual real live person operating at manageable scale will see it and respond!
if it's a bad account on an otherwise good-seeming server be sure to forward the report so their mod team can handle it on their end! but if you think the server that sent it is entirely bad, don't forward it to avoid harassment being directed at you
don't worry about bothering us, your mods and admins want you to have a good experience on here! we're happy to resolve reports to keep your social media experience safer and comfier :3

it's like
the fediverse is a social media experience that is TRULY yours. in your hands. yours to control and shape how you see fit. instead of it being up to the whims of some big corpo

like
i could go on corpo socials and post about being trans and get called slurs and report it and the report never does anything because big tech doesn't give a fuck about transphobia
or i could go on fedi and talk about being trans and we have as many bad servers blocked as possible but maybe if somehow one slips through the cracks and says something mean we can ban them and keep them from harassing any of our other users
so much nicer here

i fucking love the fediverse. i live and breathe this place. i found it at a critical point in my life so many years ago and it made me the person i am today. and saved my life, and enabled me to escape my abusive family, and let me build a beautiful wonderful amazing life for myself here in seattle. and it continues to help me survive constantly. and for all that i am so eternally grateful. i hope one day i win the lottery or something and can finally give back to mutual aid on here like i've always dreamed of
fedi was a critical piece of my gender journey. on early era mastodon we always used to joke that coming here turned people trans, because it was true. there's so many trans people here just living their lives and it's such amazing and necessary representation. it gave me exactly what i needed at precisely the right time
i owe everything i am and have to this place
thank you, all of you, for being here. you make this place awesome 🥹 :rainbow_heart:

starting to think that between being in a book about fedi and getting recognized irl from on here literally 25 times and the last person who recognized me just straight up calling me a fedi celebrity
maybe the work i've done with #FediPact and building community on here was actually worth something and, in fact, quite important. maybe it's not all just in my head after all lol

ways in which being a fediverse instance admin is a lot like being a cyberpunk edgerunner
• largely thankless job
• steadily upgrading hardware is necessary
• burnout is a certainty
• failure is guaranteed eventually
• it's just about how long you can keep going
• everything only ever lasts for so long
• you don’t make a name for yourself by how you live... but by how you die (aka whatever fedi meta drama ends up shutting down your instance)

hey! it's me Vanta Rainbow Black, fedi's favorite cyberpunk catgirl instance admin. i'm here to ask for your help crowdfunding a new laptop for myself because my current one is really shitty and old. PAINFULLY old. january 2017 old. and so, so shitty. i literally cannot even stream video on discord or make music in ableton live with it that's how fuckin shitty we're talking. it freezes up a lot when i'm trying to edit videos AND I'M A VIDEO EDITOR. in linux shit constantly crashes due to a lack of available memory. i can barely wikiwalk because having too many tabs open fucks shit up. it's just a BAD experience all around
but it's more than just those issues. i rely on my laptop for a lot. it's my main method of interfacing with the world really. i do everything from video editing to writing to making music to gamedev and everything over under or in-between. and i just... cannot goddamn stand this anymore. it pisses me off so much. but i've realized the power to possibly change things is in my hands maybe. it's at least potentially doable
so i'm asking for $1200 to buy a used gaming laptop off of craigslist or something. why a gaming laptop? i'm purposefully shooting for overkill so i don't have to worry about upgrading again for a good long while
thank you :rainbow_heart:

STORY TIME: MY FIRST EDIBLES
by vanta rainbow black
-
MY FIRST EDIBLE EVER (MADE BY ME!)
the year was 2013. i was a fresh-faced high school sophomore at the time. this was back when weed was still illegal in california. i bought a gram of some from some dude in my tv/video class. but him and his dipshit friends had tried to imitate breaking bad by putting chili powder in it, so it was totally unsmokeable. not to be deterred, i set out to make edibles with it one night when my mom wasn't home. i crushed some up with my hands and put it in some sorta oil. then put that in the oven and let it go for a while. i think it was my first time ever using the oven. anyway i dipped some toast in the oil afterwards. what the fuck is dosing? i had no tolerance and just ate a gram of weed. i wasn't convinced anything would even happen, sure i did something wrong to make it not work. and then... two hours passed and IT HIT ME
so i freaked out. i kept thinking i was dying. started panicking. called my mom and told her i was having an asthma attack. of course, that bitch just freaked out and made it worse lol. at one point i was just... lying down in the driveway of our house. because i was like "at least this way if i die somebody will find me" lmaooooooo. you'd think i would've learned my lesson about edibles and dosing but instead...
MY FIRST EDIBLE MADE BY SOMEONE ELSE
the year was still 2013. i bought some homemade weed cereal bars from a dude in my math class. i remember texting him asking how much i should take, and he responded: "the whole thing, you'll thank me later." and so, i did, at the very first out of a long string of house parties i would end up attending in high school. when me and the friend i went with arrived we walked in, went through the house, and into the backyard. we sat down at a table, each popped the entirety of our respective cereal bars, and chilled for a bit. started knocking back beers. 45 minutes passed, then suddenly somebody was running to the back door of the house and shouting "cops are here!!!"
never one to be defeated, i already had a plan for this. i'd been around and even scoped out the location on google earth before and knew there was a drainage ditch running behind that block of houses. at the very end, the fence was knocked down, and there was an abandoned house. so i turned to my friend and was like "abandoned house?" and he nodded fervently
so we dipped the fuck out. we had to get down a hill to get to the backyard fence, and i tripped and tumbled down it. picked myself up quickly. jumped the fence. and when i made it to the other side and picked myself up i turned around to find not just the friend i'd came to the party with but three other unfamiliar individuals. they asked "you said something about an abandoned house?" sirens blaring, rain beginning to pour, people in the distance freaking out. in that moment THE EDIBLE HIT. so hard. so i turned to the newcomers and with a touch of dramatics said "come with me if you want to live!!!!!"
and so they did. and we made it out without getting busted by the cops. i would end up running away from the pigs numerous times throughout my career in teenage hooliganism. one time they sent a helicopter after us and i had to hide in a tiny little tunnel for an hour lol. what the fuck?
anyways yeah. that's my story. thanks for reading. hope it was at least a little bit entertaining lmao

CYBERPUNK IS NOW (AND ALREADY IN YOUR POCKET)
by vanta rainbow black
-
"this story is dedicated to all those cyberpunks who fight against injustice and corruption every day of their lives." --Hideo Kojima
-
the smartphone. it is simultaneously the greatest tool and most thoroughly binding shackle of our era. to not have a phone is to essentially be unable to participate in modern society. in the apartment complex i live in right now, you HAVE TO download an app onto your phone and scan for the machines with bluetooth JUST TO USE THE FUCKING WASHERS AND DRYERS. think about that: the mere act of washing your fucking clothes in 2025 can potentially require a smartphone! if you had told this to someone fifteen years ago it'd sound like something out of a satirical cyberpunk story. like there isn't even a way to pay with coins or anything. so fuck anyone with a broken phone who's too poor to afford a replacement. fuck anyone whose phone is dead and needs a charge. fuck older people who don't use smartphones. this is essentially the message being sent by our property management company making these ridiculous decisions
anyway. needless to say... cyberpunk is now. the world is a boring horrifying techno-dystopia. we rely on our phones for so much. navigation, rideshares, ordering food, communicating with our loved ones, maintaining a social life, and anything else you could possibly think of. but they also collect so much information about us, and sell it to the highest bidder to be used for targeted advertising purposes. i never see ads, i've been using ublock origin since i was 14. but whenever i accidentally step into that world, the ad-infested shithole that is the modern web, i recoil in horror. i CANNOT believe regular people live like this. and most don't even realize there's a better way. sometimes trans people talk about having their gender affirmed by advertising algorithms -- there's even a song about it by she/her/hers -- and every time i'm just like... wtf? you see ads?! lol
big corporations design dark patterns to keep us hooked. to keep our attention firmly ensnared by their algorithms. infinite scroll on shorts, push notifications, peer pressure. they dangle promises of clout in front of you to keep you invested. they track every minute detail of your browsing. like how long you stay on a page, how fast you scroll, and more. facebook itself is known to collect ridiculous mountains of personal data. even on people who don't have accounts! there are fucking shadow profiles!!! and they're known to cooperative with government requests for censorship and data
handing over control of our social lives to some big corpo that's at the whims of oppressive governments (which? all of them. government is inherently oppressive) is a bad idea. that's why i love the fediverse so much! it's social media in the hands of the people. it's ours, truly and fully. i cannot imagine staking my livelihood on a corpo platform, constantly under the threat of demonitization or shadowbanning or just outright banning. hold your tongue, don't say the wrong thing. you can't even curse on some of those platforms. i've said it before and i'll say it again: that's no way to live!!!!!
people, by and large, walk around constantly glued to our phones. they're so critical to our daily lives they go beyond a tool and become an extension of our very being. i remember the first time a computer felt like that to me -- it was in the seventh grade. my laptop. this was before smartphones however. i just had some flip phone or something. we are all essentially cyborgs who don't even realize it! smartphone cyborgs!!! smartphones have made us more connected. like, what the fuck did people do before the internet when they didn't know something? they either looked it up in a dictionary or just lived with not knowing. which is unthinkable to someone from the modern era. but you and i have the vast sum of human knowledge readily at our fingertips. the rise of the internet historically directly correlates to an increase in social justice. the defining aspect of the 2010's, when smartphones became largely ubiquitous, was an enormous uptick in people giving a fuck about things. queer rights, black lives matter, mental health awareness. remember when something like a marilyn manson (fuck that guy tho) concert was offensive enough to warrant huge protests? and then the internet happened and everyone got desensitized to shocking stuff lol
smartphones have also enabled the greatest mass theft in history. the theft of personal information on an unthinkably vast scale. they have enabled us to be tracked, monitored, logged. they have created an unspoken expectation among many that everyone will always be instantly reachable with communication. they have contributed to horrific situations of domestic violence and familial abuse (stalkerware, etc.). they have severely thinned the line between work and personal life. they've made a spectacle out of existence, birthing armies of influencers and content creators. everyone wants a piece of the pie so to speak. they've enabled fraudsters, scammers, and thieves to find new horizons of deceit. they've turned the world into a literal cyberpunk dystopia. i don't know what else to call it. the core of cyberpunk is HIGH TECH mixed with LOW LIFE and, well, yeah. in a world where even the poorest of people is expected to own a smartphone (my apartment complex mentioned previously is explicitly low-income housing) this is where we find ourselves
but, the battle is not lost. there are things you can do to help subvert surveillance capitalism. both on a personal and societal scale. we don't have to just lay down and accept defeat. even if it's probably impossible to fully disentangle yourself from the massive web of surveillance we find ourselves in, there are ways to minimize and reduce things. like, for instance, using the fediverse instead of corpo social media. lemmy instead of reddit. peertube instead of youtube. bookwyrm instead of goodreads. ublock origin, privacy badger, noscript. leaving your phone at home when protesting. and probably a buncha other shit idk about because i'm not exactly the most technical person. sure, i deem myself a cyberpunk, but i find myself drawn to the more social and political aspects of the genre. i've tried to learn programming before (python) but my ADHD has always just refused to cooperate
the cyberpunk genre is marked by the contrast of high tech and low life, massive wealth inequality, and a technological dystopia. if you can't see that in the world we live in today, you really gotta look around more and listen to alternate perspectives from marginalized groups. cyberpunk is now, and all we can do about it is try to be true to ourselves despite everything. but, to me, cyberpunk is about more than just the dystopia -- it implies to a certain spirit of rebellion typical main characters in such a setting might exhibit. and that's what i mean when i say we're "putting the punk back into cyberpunk." like all counterculture movements, the mainstream will try to water it down and make it palatable to the masses. but it's more than just a genre; it's a worldview. a wake-up call. a call to arms against the suffocatingly bleak oppressive society of the present day. but, most of all, it's a promise -- to fight. and not give up. however bleak things get. because fuck capitalism. a critique of capitalism is inherent to the mere premise of the genre, and yet many fans of it fail to understand that just because it's heavily stylized and looks cool that doesn't mean it's a desirable future. the techno-dystopia is what we're fighting against
in closing, cyberpunk is now and the vast majority of us are all cyborgs just a little bit

STAY WEIRD FEDI: IN DEFENSE OF THE ECCENTRIC, ECLECTIC, AND ERRATIC
by vanta rainbow black
-
"queer people joined, and furries. it comes in waves." --Gargron, 2018
-
a person's attitude towards furries is a great litmus test for their level of tolerance generally, and the presence of furries and queer people and other outcasts in a space is a major sign of a healthy social ecosystem. maybe the biggest one even. with statistics showing the vast majority of furries are queer in some capacity, it makes sense that 2000's era meme furry hate was nothing more than thinly-veiled bigotry
the fediverse is an interesting place. what happens when you accidentally sextuple-overbook the same convention center with a queer pride event and furry convention and punk show and kink festival and antifa assembly and hacker conference? you get early mastodon, essentially. the november 2022 twitter waves and meta threads' activitypub integration have diluted this vibe considerably, but the fighting spirit of the fediverse is still there. and as corpo gentrifiers (meta, etc.) continue to attempt to chip away at what makes the fediverse so wonderful, here's why it's worth saving:
-
ONE: because it's beautiful
the fediverse is the only major social media platform where trans people can freely express themselves and be visible without fear of experiencing unmoderated hate-speech. provided your instance has adequate moderation, of course. but this is the case more often than not. sure, the occassional new bigot pleroma instance pops up once in a while. but at least you can trust that something will actually be fucking done about it when you submit a report. nazis get banned and defederated. it's such a low godddamn bar to clear... and yet, by and large, the fediverse is the only major social media platform that actually manages to do this (the decent sections of it, at least). why? well, here's the big secret: BECAUSE WE DON'T GIVE A FUCK ABOUT PROFIT!!! big companies allow nazis to fester on their services because it makes them money, and here we're not beholden to such a corrupting influence. that's kinda the entire point
all the good servers have all the bad ones blocked. that's the beauty of the fediverse. they're essentially isolated from the good portion of the network. in a book i got interviewed for (Move Slowly and Build Bridges: Mastodon, the Fediverse, and the Struggle for Democratic Social Media by Robert W. Gehl) this is termed the "covenantal fediverse" due to said instances broadly following the mastodon server covenant, the most important point of which is "active moderation against racism, sexism, homophobia and transphobia." the rest is just technical stuff. still important, but nowhere near as influental
-
TWO: because it's subversive
c'mon. being "normal" is boring as fuck. "is anything as strange as a normal person? is anyone as cruel as a normal person?" pushing back against the mainstream is awesome and epic and cool as fuck. not just for the sake of it of course, but because the mainstream SUCKS. compulsive heterosexuality, patriarchy, transphobia, ableism, competition instead of cooperation, sanitized advertiser-friendly language ("unalived" etc.), silence in the face of injustice, compromise, conformity, boring watered-down top 100 pop hits playing on the radio and barbeques with a biological family who harshly judges and really just outright hates you
DON'T WE FUCKING DESERVE BETTER?!?!?!?!?!?!
i think we do. let's be less like uptight milquetoast suburbanites and more like the neighbors down the street who they despise -- the punk house with a front yard full of empty beer bottles and crumpled up anarchism zines that's constantly getting noise complaints. in other words: let's have fun, and be awesome, and fuck the corpo stiffs trying to stand in our way!
you can't even say swear words on tiktok. and other corpo social media platforms don't fare much better. that's no way to live. FUCK!!!!!
-
THREE: because it's important
as fascism ever-encroaches digital spaces free from corporate tyranny will only become more important. as trans people are being actively genocided here in the U.S. and abroad, alternative social media systems are a place where we can truly express ourselves. find ourselves. become ourselves. corporations are rolling back DEI initiatives and rules against queerphobia. these corpo platforms are no place to thrive. when i joined mastodon in 2017, it was at a crucial time in my gender journey. fedi singlehandedly saved me from being some doofy techbro and turned me into the amazing cyberpunk catgirl i am today. it gave me the critical positive trans representation i so desperately needed, and gave me a likeminded community. a space to learn and grow, and try on new aspects of identity to see what fit. i credit it almost entirely with shaping me into Vanta Rainbow Black
it's a common thread on the fediverse. always has been. even today. so much so that i came up with a name for it, way back in 2017: The Fediverse Effect. people tend to join and realize they're trans due to the sheer abundance of trans people on the network. it really helps to have positive representation y'know? like actual tangible people to dispel common myths and misconceptions, who you can even talk to personally about this stuff. it was indispensible in my journey towards finding myself and molding myself into the person i was meant to be
-
in closing... fuck meta. fuck automattic. fuck flipboard. and fuck all the other corporate gentrifiers in the future who might try to encroach upon our beautiful weird digital haven in the name of turning a profit. you have nothing but my contempt
we should stay weird. unsanitized. unmarketable. for to do otherwise would be to forfeit the very soul of what makes the fediverse so special
stay weird fedi
