I'm tired of this zero-sum cruelty. Here's what should happen instead: 1. Rewrite Pharmac's terms of reference so that it has flexibility in its approach to medicine negotiations and so that it prioritises patient health instead of the austerity-style budget rules it has now (and maybe completely overhaul the Orwellian 'health economics' rules that they use to determine the value of your life.) 2. Yes, raise its budget (a long overdue step), but don't do so by cutting other healthcare or foreign aid or education. Do it by taxing f$%&king landlords and corporations. They don't die of preventable diseases. 3. And it should go without saying: fund *all* healthcare properly: medicine access is just one part of a system that is collapsing under the weight of neo-liberal greed. A pill doesn't replace a coordinated system of care. npub1fpwpjs9nrx5dxmdn7aa7m950eddz9rd7js3a4gy4fljayav4j67s9vpvf5 Kōtare :tinoflag: I don't want to get into any sort of fist-fight here or get picked up by immigration but I'm a #Kiwi who has been living in #Melbourne for about 10 months now and there are three cute things the locals are constantly banging on about that I absolutely love: 1. It's really diverse here. Compared to what? Adelaide maybe? I mean this place is white as hell. 2. 'Four seasons in one day' I come from Auckland. Try again. 3. Best coffee in the world. But the biggest, most obvious, most harmful stress in a young persons life? More often than anything else, it is poverty (and the kaleidescope of other harms that stem from this). Enough moral outrage about smartphones in schools already, and maybe some more moral outrage about the rising number of homeless teenagers. Our kids are seeing harmful content irl, everyday. I don't deny social media is often shitty and problematic for people of any age, but bans are nothing but blindfolds. They don't tackle the drivers of mental distress. This was the culmination of an epic journey that began with me starting a kids class (mostly because of her) when she was seven. That one decision increased the size of our club tenfold over the following years, and built a really supportive community around us. I stopped training a few years ago when health issues overtook me, but today - after my daughter was awarded her belt - they presented me with this beautiful pounamu. It's a bittersweet ending to over twenty years at this club. I was the first student, on the first day, when my instructor started the club and he gave me this today. I spent a decade running it as head instructor when he stepped down. I went on to train hundreds of people, compete in and win national competitions (on my own behalf and with them), and i trained many wonderful kids and adults some of whom have reached the highest levels. 16 of then were promoted today. Pride and humility mix, as does sadness and joy. Hope requires resolve, pragmatism, and hard work to become reality - but while that potential exists, then so does my hope - even in these challenging times. https://www.buzzsprout.com/2546745/episodes/18007843-the-power-of-advocacy-james-mcgoram #Healthcare #RareDisorders npub1fpwpjs9nrx5dxmdn7aa7m950eddz9rd7js3a4gy4fljayav4j67s9vpvf5 Kōtare :tinoflag: @nprofile…sp74 @nprofile…7yvh i was going to jump in, but there's already been a lot of highs and lows on this thread. npub1fpwpjs9nrx5dxmdn7aa7m950eddz9rd7js3a4gy4fljayav4j67s9vpvf5 Kōtare :tinoflag: My thoughts and prayers are with all of the trampolines in the lower reaches of the country tonight. https://o.mastodon.nz/media_attachments/files/115/416/505/029/180/344/original/0b763d5ceb0a570a.jpg npub1fpwpjs9nrx5dxmdn7aa7m950eddz9rd7js3a4gy4fljayav4j67s9vpvf5 Kōtare :tinoflag: Was scheduled to fly into Wellington tomorrow morning but, I don't know, I think I'm going to pass. npub1fpwpjs9nrx5dxmdn7aa7m950eddz9rd7js3a4gy4fljayav4j67s9vpvf5 Kōtare :tinoflag: @nprofile…ne85 watery emulsions are an enemy of the people. npub1fpwpjs9nrx5dxmdn7aa7m950eddz9rd7js3a4gy4fljayav4j67s9vpvf5 Kōtare :tinoflag: @nprofile…ne85 you put on pants after you drag your ass into the city? npub1fpwpjs9nrx5dxmdn7aa7m950eddz9rd7js3a4gy4fljayav4j67s9vpvf5 Kōtare :tinoflag: @nprofile…ne85 @nprofile…uaam look at patient zero right here. npub1fpwpjs9nrx5dxmdn7aa7m950eddz9rd7js3a4gy4fljayav4j67s9vpvf5 Kōtare :tinoflag: I made the mistake of reading two paragraphs penned by Damien Grant this morning, and i think I'll need the day off. #NZMedia npub1fpwpjs9nrx5dxmdn7aa7m950eddz9rd7js3a4gy4fljayav4j67s9vpvf5 Kōtare :tinoflag: It has been a trying few years and i think that for my (somewhat deferred) midlife crisis I'm going to abandon my comfortable suburban life and become a pirate. 17th century, preferrably. Due mostly to massive funding cuts across the charitable & non-profit sector organisations can't afford to invest in PD at the moment, and that means less-qualified staff, who feel less valued, and who we know from internal research are paid well below other sectors. Every week, another charity providing critical social work with at-risk populations goes under - even while funding for prisons is increased. It reminds me that, actually, we have *all* of the answers we need to solve social problems - and the people to do it - but we do not have the will. For some, it seems, charities must eternally exist as part of a moral eco-system where poor & vulnerable people must also eternally exist, along with 'baddies' that do crime. "That's just the way the world is" they will say, smiling, as they dispense Weetbix and budgeting advice with a patronising smile. It's all rubbish. We made this world, and we can choose to make it different. The people I work with daily show-up and change people's lives for the better. They get shit pay and no respect, but they do it anyway. They have hope for the young people they work with. They foster that hope in these rangatahi. It is infectious. It is crucial. And I wish we had that same hope and aspiration for our society as a whole. I am wondering if this has ever been modeled mathematically. For instance, does treating the lowest end of the bell curve really improve things for everyone more than focusing our efforts on the centre? I'm deliberately ignoring the moral question of whether it is right to abandon the most vulnerable, and sticking to overall measurable improvements. I ask this in an age where such a thing as the Social Return on Investment (SROI) is a real metric charities are tasked with navigating. The process of packing up your entire life and shipping it to another country is...challenging. I'll post more about the exact circumstances of that at a later date - but suffice it to say, I have *thoughts* to share about the broken social contract in Aotearoa (and how it affects people with rare disorders specifically.) I'm absolutely gutted to be leaving my community behind, including my job where I work with volunteers and youth workers around the country to support our rangatahi. I would prefer to be staying, but I can't get the treatment I need and my symptoms are progressing. It's a choice of staying here and having a long, painful death - or moving to Australia, being paid more, and living a full life into my old age. So...yeah. It's become an obvious choice. As a result, one thing I'm going to need is a new job. Community-based, for-purpose work is my preference. Their agency has been stripped from them and replaced with an order to conform or go to prison. All that is reported is whether they have reoffended, as though that is what matters (rather than guaging their wellbeing) It's a racist, harmful approach that is, quite frankly, an expensive performance for the benefit of some very out of touch and entitled wankers. npub1fpwpjs9nrx5dxmdn7aa7m950eddz9rd7js3a4gy4fljayav4j67s9vpvf5 Kōtare :tinoflag: @nprofile…4aq7 10 out of 10 youth workers agree.
