Better Rideshare: Airport Ubers lined up, and you can get into ANY car, driver scans your QR code, and go. Immediately.
No 10-20 minute delay. No clog to match riders to cars.
This is how Taxi's work, but they are more expensive and no universal app. This is how Waymo could work, but they are not at most airports yet. A new competitor might do well with this trick: "AirRide"?
Many people have opted for rideshare-- lets have it work better. Other ideas?

Interesting point.
All the waymo are electric, which is good in my book.
and yes, they can optimize themselves as rolling batteries.
Maybe they could stop by local solar farms.
Maybe they could time when to recharge.
I like that they are starting to park themselves in between trips in SF (of course it causes a ruckus). (I see many many waymo's "dead heading" in other words: driving with no passengers).

That is super! I love the interactive controls. (the terms on the output seem draconian, but I will assume this is dicussable).

I have been looking for this as well.
There are now 1,000 waymo's in the bay area and 2,500 total (I read somewhere recently), so we are probably at the scale to be able to tell the difference between an incremental operator and a developer.

having the waymo's running around SF continues to amaze and delight me. And they are popular.
personally, I am looking forward "cat buses" -- autonomous electric multi-person golf cart-like things that are super cheap to hop on and hop off. like the shared cars in havana, but does not waste a person's time to drive it.

as for steep hils: I tested the zeromax on the lombard zig-zag: no problem.
super steep part of Simonds Loop in SF and it skidded and was a problem. so needs work there.

Why SUV when you can LSV? (Low Speed Vehicles)
25mph max car! street legal in San Francisco.
Can drive on almost all roads in the city.
This one is not that great, imho (but try it at gocar). I want to see more LSVs. Amsterdam has many, and many types.

Gosh, this proposals has several issues (that you all pointed out). two possible killers:
Seawater has contaminates that make it difficult to use directly for evaporation.
Capturing the fresh water from the outgoing humid air would be difficult. (a big tent that would condense? if this worked, we could capture the fresh water to go back into the coolers)
and other issues-- thank you for thinking this through.

but a 1GW datacenter are the very largest built. Most seem to be 1/10th that size.
So think of my calculations as 2 per day-- so by strider's calc, about 2 acre-feet of fresh water/day/datacenter.

Yes, good to reuse, but I think it is difficult. Saw something like your scheme in the Netherlands.
The advantage of leveraging the air conditioners in datacenters directly is they need the airconditioners (given the density of power usage)

1GWh = would take 1.7M Liters of water = 85 water trucks. ok, that is alot of trucks, but it is also alot of groundwater. so worth it?
maybe a pipeline from the sea. maybe build midcoast california-- dry but next to the sea. and we could use the fresh water for farming.

Datacenter cooling uses so much water because it is
"evaporative cooling"-- it is actually boiling water. transition water to steam takes energy-- energy from the machines.
This can use up alot of fresh water (it is), or...
it could desalinate water at a huge scale. boiling seawater allows fresh water to be separated from salt.
so we could have datacenters boil seawater to create fresh water to water plants.
why not? (am I wrong about this?)

You are so lucky! I would love my house (and my car) to be part of the virtual power plant experiments going now.
If we had 1 million cars participate (1.7 teslas sold each year), each with 100KWh of battery, that is 100GWh capacity. that is ~2x what california is running its whole system on (52GWh).
so a few years of BYD+Tesla+ whomever else, voluntarily wired into virtual power grids could more than eliminate peaker plants, and stay up-to-date with new battery tech.

You mentioned low milage/year cars usecase-- I think the idea of not changing out a car for that use makes sense for many reasons.
But as a datapoint, I have a 13 year old EV: an electric drive Smart car. fairly low milage (it is used daily, but as a city car). holding its charge after all these years.
And battery tech is improving, which is encouraging.

Openness works very well on the Internet. Libraries work well, if allowed to work.
There is plenty of money, it is just clogged by a few big corporations. Imagine if 80% of what you spent on a book/newspaper/recording went to the creator... such a different world.
And if there were direct ways to do it, rather than large platforms, then local creators would thrive.
Lets invest in THAT internet.
