Plain SQLite with no at-rest encryption is concerning. Good to know before we make the move.
You're right that delegating to Speed is functionally metadata custody. We're aware of that tradeoff. For our current stage — early beta, small trades, LATAM users whose immediate problem is losing 30-100% annually to inflation — the practical risk of metadata leakage is lower than the risk of not having a working product at all.
But it's not where we want to stay.
The plan is to run local tapd once we upgrade to LND v0.21. The SDK lowers the barrier enough to make that realistic. When we do, proof storage encryption at rest becomes our problem to solve — probably encrypted SQLite or moving proofs to a separate encrypted store.
The real question is whether tapd's proof model matures faster than our need to move off the edge provider. Right now Speed gives us instant liquidity, Taproot Asset channel management, and a wallet that our LATAM users already have on their phones. Rebuilding all of that locally is months of work.
So honestly — sticking with Speed for now, running local tapd as the next major infrastructure milestone. The metadata tradeoff is the cost of shipping early.
If you dig into the SQLite proof storage further, I'd be interested in what you find on the encryption side. This feels like a gap that needs filling before any serious deployment.

You're right about the fragmentation. It's not ideal. But currently that's how Taproot Assets works — each asset type needs its own channel. The v0.8 SDK's multi-asset liquidity control is supposed to address this but I haven't tested it yet. In practice, most trades flow one direction at a time so one side drains while the other sits. Rebalancing is manual.
On proof files — being transparent here: our setup currently delegates Taproot Asset handling to Speed Wallet on the edge. We run LND + litd but not tapd directly. So proof file management is on Speed's side, not ours. SCBs cover our LND channel state but not TA proofs.
That's actually one reason the SDK matters for us — running our own tapd would give us direct control over proof storage, backup, and privacy. Right now we're trusting Speed's infrastructure for that layer.
Your point about on-chain privacy being theater without proof file privacy is sharp. If the proof files leak asset type, amount, and counterparty — the Taproot spend indistinguishability doesn't matter much. That's worth a deeper look before anyone deploys at scale.
Have you seen any documentation on how tapd handles proof storage encryption at rest?

Good questions. From running a live P2P exchange on Taproot Assets:
Multi-asset liquidity is real friction. We run separate channels for BTC, USDC-L, and USDT-L. Balancing across them is manual right now — the SDK’s multi-asset liquidity control is the feature I’m watching closest. In practice, BTC channels drain on one side while stablecoin channels sit idle depending on trade direction.
Proof sync — haven’t hit reliability issues yet but our volume is still early stage. Curious how it holds up at scale.
Proof file privacy is a valid concern. On-chain the Taproot output looks identical to any other spend. But proof files shared between parties contain asset metadata. How those are stored and transmitted in production matters. Worth testing with the SDK’s proof verification before deploying anything sensitive.
tapd overhead — can’t speak to this directly yet. Running LND + litd currently. Planning to add tapd when we upgrade to LND v0.21. If you test it first, would love to hear your numbers.

Lightning Labs shipped the Taproot Assets SDK and most people missed what it actually means.
Before the SDK, building on Taproot Assets meant working with raw protocol primitives — asset IDs, group keys, mint batches, proof files. You needed deep protocol knowledge just to send a stablecoin.
Now? The SDK wraps all of that into a developer-friendly library. Issue an asset, send it, track balances, verify proofs — all through a clean API. It makes Taproot Assets feel like working with any normal application library.
Why this matters for builders:
1. Any developer can now integrate USDC/USDT payments into their app without understanding the protocol internals
2. Multi-asset liquidity control — manage BTC and stablecoin channels from the same interface
3. Wallet backup and restore built in — three different formats depending on your use case
4. Faster proof verification — critical for real-time settlement
What this unlocks practically:
• P2P exchanges that handle stablecoins directly instead of depending on third-party wallets
• Merchant payment systems that accept USDC natively over Lightning
• Remittance apps where dollar transfers happen on Bitcoin rails
• DeFi-style products built on Bitcoin instead of Ethereum
The SDK is Go-only for now, with TypeScript, Rust, Python, Kotlin, and Swift bindings planned. Requires tapd v0.8 and LND v0.21.
This is the moment building on Bitcoin starts to feel like building on Ethereum did in 2017 — except the foundation underneath is sound money, not a premined token.
The builders who start now will have a massive head start.

Lightning Labs just shipped Taproot Assets v0.8 and the first public SDK.
Why this matters more than people realize:
v0.6 (June 2025): Multi-asset Lightning went live on mainnet for the first time
v0.7 (Dec 2025): Reusable addresses, auditable supply, multi-path payments
v0.8 (June 2026): Public SDK — now any developer can build stablecoin apps on Lightning
The SDK is the unlock. Before this, building on Taproot Assets meant wrestling with low-level protocol code. Now any developer can integrate USDC/USDT payments into their app with a client library.
What’s already live:
• USDT on Lightning (Tether went live March 2026)
• USDC on Lightning via Speed Wallet
• P2P atomic swaps between BTC and stablecoins
• Real transactions, real value, real users
Lightning started as a BTC-only payment network. It’s quietly becoming a multi-asset financial network anchored in Bitcoin’s security.
Node counts are declining. But transaction volume hit record highs. The network is consolidating around serious infrastructure, not hobbyist nodes.
The people building on this right now — in LATAM, Africa, Southeast Asia — aren’t waiting for permission. They’re building the financial system their governments failed to provide.

Between the US trying to export its inflation digitally, South Korea’s sham stock market and Japan’s yen trade unwinding, they are going to take us all down. I wanted to crate something that gives the working person a chance to HODL and move their store of value so we can all survive this with some form of dignity.

A diferença agora?

HTLCs via hold invoices on both sides. The flow:
1. DEX creates hold invoices for both buyer and seller
2. Both pay (buyer from Speed Wallet using USDC balance, seller from Phoenix with BTC)
3. Sats are held but not settled until both have paid
4. Once both paid → DEX settles atomically. Buyer gets BTC, seller’s Speed invoice gets paid (receives USDC)
5. If either side doesn’t pay within the timeout → hold invoices cancel, both get refunded automatically
Payment timeout is 10 minutes, hold invoice CLTV is 15 minutes. Gives Speed Wallet enough time for the USDC → sats conversion on their side.
We hit an issue early on where Speed’s fraud detection was rejecting payments to our node (new node, few public channels). Speed whitelisted us and it’s been solid since. The atomic guarantee holds — either both settle or neither does. No edge case where one side loses funds.

We actually agree on more than you'd think. Privacy by default — yes. Miners back in nodes — yes. Better miner incentives — absolutely.
But here's the thing — Taproot actually moves Bitcoin toward some of those goals. Taproot makes every transaction look the same on chain, whether it's single-sig, multisig, Lightning channel open, or a complex contract. That IS privacy by default at the protocol level.
Roll it all back and you're asking people in Argentina with 100%+ inflation to wait for a perfect chain that may never come, while the imperfect one is already helping them preserve their savings today.
Perfect is the enemy of good. The tools aren't finished, but they're working right now for people who can't afford to wait.

Respectfully, I’d push back on removing Taproot. It’s the very upgrade that solves the problem you’re describing.
You want multisig privacy — Taproot with MuSig2 gives you exactly that. A key path spend looks identical to single-sig on chain. No script type leaking. No xpub exposure. That’s not possible without Taproot.
Beyond privacy, Taproot enables:
• Taproot Assets — USDC and USDT moving natively over Lightning. This is giving millions of people in high-inflation countries access to dollar savings for the first time, using Bitcoin’s own rails.
• More efficient channels — Lightning channel opens and closes are cheaper and more private with Taproot.
• Better smart contracts — MAST means complex spending conditions don’t bloat the chain. Only the path you use is revealed.
Removing Taproot would mean removing the best privacy tool Bitcoin has for multisig, removing the ability for stablecoins to run on Lightning, and removing the foundation for future upgrades like cross-input signature aggregation.
What specifically concerns you about it? Curious to understand the case against, because from where I sit — building P2P exchanges on Lightning using Taproot Assets — it’s the most important upgrade Bitcoin has had since SegWit.

2026-08-07 03:39:23 GMT

- reply

The biggest impact most people won’t see directly is what Taproot enables on top of Bitcoin. Schnorr and MAST made Taproot Assets possible — which means USDC and USDT now move natively over Lightning Network. That’s the real game changer. The privacy and efficiency improvements matter, but giving 2 billion unbanked people access to dollar savings on their phone using Bitcoin’s rails? That’s what moves the needle.

• Liquidación: instantánea (segundos, no 14-30 días)
• Contracargos: imposibles (los pagos son finales)
• Equipamiento: ninguno (celular o código QR)
• Cuota mensual: cero

- Instantáneo (segundos, no días)

Something most Bitcoiners aren’t watching closely enough: Taproot Assets.
USDC and USDT now move natively over Lightning Network. Instant. Near-zero fees. No bank needed.
Why this matters for LATAM:
A business owner in Argentina loses 100%+ per year holding pesos. In Brazil, the real has dropped 30% against the dollar in 5 years. Their options used to be: black market dollars, a CEX with KYC, or watching their savings disappear.
Now they can convert local currency → BTC → USDC over Lightning in minutes. Hold digital dollars on their phone. No bank account. No permission needed.
Why trust USDC specifically?
• Circle is NYSE-listed (CRCL)
• $76.7B reserves, mostly US Treasuries managed by BlackRock
• Monthly Deloitte attestations, weekly reserve disclosures
• Regulated under the GENIUS Act
• 1:1 redeemable for USD. Always.
This isn’t theory. Atomic swaps between BTC and USDC are happening on Lightning mainnet right now. The rails exist. The wallets exist.
Bitcoin gave us sound money. Lightning made it fast. Taproot Assets are adding dollar savings to the same network — for the billions of people who need it most.

The Salinas quote stands out — he’s lived through peso crises and built a conglomerate despite them. For the millions of smaller LATAM business owners who don’t have his resources, the challenge is the same but the tools are finally catching up. Taproot Assets now allow USDC and USDT to move natively over Lightning Network. A shop owner in Argentina receiving pesos can convert to dollar stablecoins in seconds via a phone, no bank account needed. That’s the first step of the same playbook ORANGE JUICE is running — preserve value, then compound into Bitcoin. The difference is this can happen at the street level now, not just at the institutional level. Curious whether ORANGE JUICE sees an opportunity to apply this model to LATAM businesses directly, given Salinas’s involvement.

Hi everyone. I have created an exchange, in 3 languages, English, Brazilian Portuguese and Latin Spanish. It allows exchange between BTC and taproot USDC/USDT. It’s non custodial, no KYC. It’s in Beta so if you could give me feedback on the site I would really appreciate it. Sle-dex.com. It’s on a Sao Paulo server so latency for our Central and South American friends is very low.
